Kristin Burns has lived her life by the philosophy "Don't think, just shoot"--pictures, that is. Struggling to make ends meet, she works full-time as the nanny for the fabulously wealthy Turnbull family, looking after their two wonderful children and waiting for her glamorous life as a New York photographer to begin. When her photographs are considered by an elite Manhattan art gallery, it seems she might finally get the chance that will start her career.

But Kristin has a major distraction: forbidden love. The man of her dreams is almost hers for keeps. Breathless with an inexhaustible passion and the excitement of being within reach of her goals, Kristen ignores all signs of catastrophe brewing.

Fear exists for a reason. And Kristin can only dismiss the warnings for so long. Searching desperately for the truth through the lens of her camera, she can only hope that it's not too late. This novel of psychological suspense is a stunning achievement for thriller master James Patterson, "one of the bestselling writers in history" New York Sun.

This was definitely a significant change of pace for Patterson.

It is not at all similar to his Cross or other detective/police thrillers. In fact, it reminded me more of a Dean Koontz horror type thriller.

Perhaps it was written more by the co-author, Roughan, than by Patterson. That being said, the story did manage to keep me turning the pages, eager to figure out what on earth was going on.

I'm still not entirely sure what some of the things that happened to Kristin signified, such as the music she continuously heard, the hives she would repeatedly break out in, and the cockroaches.

Anyway, I still thought it was highly entertaining and, as I mentioned, it was a real page-turner. I read the whole thing in just a few hours, although not in one sitting.

This unique blend of mystery and horror elements made the book a captivating read, and I look forward to seeing what Patterson and Roughan come up with next.

This was an extremely odd book.

The timeline within it was incredibly hard to follow.

Apparently, it was supposed to take place within just 13 seconds?

But that simply couldn't be possible considering all of the numerous things that happened throughout the book.

So, I really don't know what to make of it.

It was extremely difficult to distinguish what was real and what was delusion, illusion, dream, foresight, and so on.

Nevertheless, it managed to keep me engaged from start to finish.

And in the end, I actually enjoyed the story,

even though it was a little confusing at times.

Despite its flaws in terms of the timeline and the ambiguity of what was real and what wasn't, there was something about the book that held my attention and made me want to keep reading.

Perhaps it was the unique and strange nature of the plot that appealed to me, or maybe it was the author's ability to create a sense of mystery and uncertainty that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Whatever the reason, I'm glad I took the time to read this odd but engaging book.

Oh. My. God.

This book was truly astonishingly odd! It stood out as completely different from any other Patterson novel that I have ever had the pleasure (or in this case, the rather unique experience) of reading.

I firmly believe that this is one of those books by him that you will either passionately love or vehemently hate.

Personally speaking, I really took a liking to it.

The supernatural twist that Patterson introduced was definitely a breath of fresh air and something new for him.

Surprisingly, I thought he handled it extremely well.

The only way I can even attempt to describe this book would be to say that it's like a strange and wonderful combination of The Twilight Zone and Patterson's typical style.

As is the norm with Patterson's books, the chapters were short and sweet, which always seemed to have the magical ability to end with some sort of a cliffhanger.

This had me completely hooked and eager to continue reading long into the night.

For me, this is always the telltale sign of a great thriller.

One aspect that was definitely different in this book was that the murders don't actually occur until the very end of the story.

Also, the weird ghost sightings by Kristin were just so incredibly strange.

I found myself spending the entire book racking my brain, trying to figure out if she was a complete mental case or not.

And even with the ending as it was, I am still left pondering and working on trying to figure that out.

I am not really certain if I liked the protagonist or not.

She seemed like such a babbling idiot for half of the time.

But then again, I guess if my own sanity was being put to the test in such a strange and eerie situation, I would probably seem like a babbling idiot too!

This book is definitely a departure from the standard Patterson thriller, but it was still an absolute page turner for me.

I would highly recommend this book to other readers, but just be forewarned that this isn't your typical Patterson offering.

If you approach it with an open mind, without any preconceived notions or ideas, I truly believe that you will enjoy it.

I did not like this book at all. It simply was not my kind of book.

From the moment I picked it up, I had a feeling that it wouldn't resonate with me. The story seemed to lack depth and the characters were not developed enough.

The writing style was also not to my taste. It was too平淡 and didn't have the kind of excitement and energy that I look for in a book.

I tried to give it a chance and read a few more chapters, but I just couldn't get into it.

In the end, I put the book down and decided that it wasn't worth my time. I'm sure there are many people who would enjoy this book, but for me, it was a definite miss.

Weird is all I can really say about this book.

It's not your typical read. From the very beginning, it takes you on a journey that is filled with strange and unexpected twists and turns.

The characters are unique and have qualities that you don't often see in other books. Their actions and decisions are sometimes completely baffling, but at the same time, they draw you in and make you want to know more.

The plot is complex and convoluted, yet it manages to hold your attention throughout. There are moments when you think you have it all figured out, only to be proven wrong a few pages later.

Overall, this book is definitely not for everyone. But if you're looking for something different and out of the ordinary, then it might be worth giving it a try. You never know, you might just discover a new favorite.

This was truly excellent.

There were some very nice twists and turns throughout the story that managed to keep you on the edge of your seat, constantly guessing what was going to happen next.

The author did a great job of building suspense and maintaining an air of mystery until the very end.

It was one of those rare books that you just can't put down once you start reading.

The characters were well-developed and the plot was engaging, making it a thoroughly enjoyable read from start to finish.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery or thriller.

From the very beginning, you have a sense that something is amiss.

Is the main character being framed, or is she simply crazy, imagining all these strange occurrences?

The more you delve into the story, the more it seems to point towards the latter.

As I read further, I could clearly anticipate where the plot was headed.

The foreshadowing was far too blatant for my taste in a good mystery.

Undoubtedly, it is a "psychological" book, but I'm not entirely convinced by the "thriller" element.

By the end, I was simply eager for it to conclude.

I struggled to relate to the main character, which left me feeling more frustrated than empathetic.

In conclusion, I would recommend skipping this book.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as his other books.

Probably because this book centers around adultery, a plot device I truly cannot stand.

If this book had been in the romance genre, I would have given up on it without hesitation.

I thought Kristin was a rather weak character. She uses poor judgment and makes bad choices and decisions throughout the entire book.

I considered Michael and Penley to be selfish, manipulative, and snobbish. I found myself constantly wondering throughout the book why Kristin remained in their employ.

The only characters I did like were Michael's children, Dakota and Sean. These kids brought a sweet innocence to what was otherwise a twisted and dark story of seduction, betrayal, and murder.

Though this story twists and turns into chaos and confusion, I was still compelled to finish the story. I just wanted to see what would happen and hopefully bring some sort of closure to this very complicated story.

It was a struggle to get through at times, but I persevered to find out the end result.
