I would rate this book as 2.75 stars.

To be honest, I really had a great liking for the first half of the book. It was engaging, filled with interesting plot twists and characters that seemed to come alive on the pages.

However, unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse very quickly after that. The story started to lose its momentum, and the plot became rather convoluted and hard to follow.

The characters also seemed to lose their charm and depth, and I found myself not really caring what happened to them anymore.

Overall, while the beginning of the book was promising, the second half really let me down. It's a shame because it had so much potential in the beginning.

I'm in the mood now for a quickie. So here it is.

The Quickie is a prime example of modern pulp fiction, firmly rooted in the raw-boned tradition of Mickey Spillane or Raymond Chandler. The snappy dialogue drives a straightforward plot through a series of twists, as a first-person narrator unfolds her story. It's tough and gritty. The ultimate resolution might seem a bit preposterous, but who cares? Just enjoy the ride, honey. With The Quickie, you get it all: jealousy, revenge, adultery, a woman scorned, robbery, murder, corrupt cops, the battle between good and evil, sexual escapades, short chapters with cliffhangers, and lines like "The Times Square neon billboard for trouble came in the form of the twenty-something blonde outside his office on Pearl Street."

If you're looking for something deeper as you follow the heroine, Lauren Stillwell, through her gender-shifted Mike Hammer routine, consider the wisdom of the old adage about deception creating a tangled web. On this level, The Quickie is reminiscent of James Siegel's thriller Derailed, where every attempt to cover up questionable decisions only leads to more of the same, until finally, the protagonist is compelled to face reality.

4 1/2 stars - This was much better than I initially expected. There were several twists and turns in the story that completely caught me off guard. I really enjoyed how the plot unfolded in unexpected ways.

I listened to this on audio, and Mary Stuart Masterson did an outstanding job. Her narration brought the characters and the story to life. She was able to capture the emotions and nuances of each character, making it a truly immersive listening experience.

The audio format added an extra layer of enjoyment to the book. It allowed me to listen while on the go, such as during my commute or while doing household chores. I found myself completely engaged in the story, eagerly waiting to see what would happen next.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book, whether you choose to read it or listen to it on audio. It's a great story with excellent narration that will keep you entertained from start to finish.

It was okay.

At first glance, it might seem like a rather ordinary statement. But upon closer inspection, it holds a certain ambiguity.

It could mean that the situation was just satisfactory, not great but not terrible either. Maybe it was an experience that didn't leave a lasting impression, yet it wasn't completely unpleasant.

Or perhaps it was a response given out of politeness, when in reality, there were some underlying feelings or thoughts that weren't being fully expressed.

In any case, "It was okay" is a phrase that can be interpreted in many different ways, depending on the context and the person saying it.

It makes us wonder what exactly lies beneath the surface of this seemingly simple statement.

Is there more to it than meets the eye?

Only by delving deeper and asking more questions can we truly understand the meaning behind those two little words.

The book began with a fast and furious pace. It was indeed somewhat exciting and had an element of intrigue that initially captured the reader's attention.

However, things quickly took a turn for the worse. The characters were one-dimensional, lacking in depth and realism, and often seemed just plain stupid. In fact, I have witnessed better writing from a first grader! I continuously found myself hoping that the book would improve. After that promising start, it took a nosedive into the dumps and unfortunately, it just remained there.

Not only did it stay in that dismal state, but it also consistently and progressively got worse with each passing page.

If you happen to come across this piece of trash (POS), my advice is to run as fast as you can! Don't waste your time or money on this abysmal excuse for a book.

OK... First off - If I could give LESS than 1 star - I would have! I don't usually add my "Books on Tape" to my Good Reads account. However, I felt compelled to "WARN" all my friends. This was truly the most absurd story I've ever listened to. It was极其令人沮丧. The characters were entirely unlikable and made the poorest choices. There were数不胜数的漏洞 in this storyline. And, the worst aspect of the story is that I couldn't stop listening to it - because I was convinced it HAD TO GET BETTER. Guess what - It didn't:)

For example, the main character's actions were completely illogical. She made decisions that went against common sense and made the situation even worse. The supporting characters were just as bad, with no redeeming qualities. The storyline jumped around randomly, making it difficult to follow and understand. There were also many loose ends that were never tied up, leaving me feeling unsatisfied.

In conclusion, I would not recommend this book to anyone. It was a waste of my time and money. Save yourself the frustration and choose a different book.

Am I the only one who thinks Patterson falls ridiculously flat when he tries to write from a woman’s point of view?

I really didn't believe for a second that Lauren was a competent NYPD detective. Her narration is flighty, shallow, and exaggerated. She sleeps with a man once, this so-called quickie, but in the narration, she treats it like some long-established affair. And the writing here is ridiculously bad. It's something I would expect from a first-time author, not someone with around 50 books under his belt. The amount of "quoted words" drove me crazy.

The saddest thing here is that the story had real promise. However, very little is fleshed out. Instead, we have a book full of shallow, selfish, unlikable characters and Patterson's now-trademark white space. If you have ever been a Patterson fan, do yourself a favor and skip this one. If I hadn't been stuck in a car for 7 hours, I wouldn't have bothered to read it at all. It's truly a disappointment considering Patterson's previous works.

Lauren Stillwell's world seems to shatter when she witnesses her husband emerging from a hotel room with another woman. Their relationship has been on shaky ground lately, partly due to their inability to conceive. Naturally, she assumes Paul is cheating on her. The book could very well be titled "You Know What Happens When You Assume." From that moment on, Lauren makes one irrational decision after another, setting off a destructive spiral that will alter everything.

Her first act is instinctual. When a younger officer she works with at the New York Police Department shows interest and they have a "quickie," Lauren steps out of the room only to return and see Scott, the officer, murdered by what appears to be her husband Paul. At first, she is at a loss, especially when she and her partner are assigned as the lead detectives to investigate the murder of a fellow cop.

From here, the story completely spins out of control. Lauren, who seemed to be a dedicated officer, tampers with evidence, implicates witnesses, and starts threatening officials at various levels to protect her husband, whose involvement she has not yet confirmed. The question remains: where will this all lead, considering how quickly she makes assumptions?

I must admit that this is the first book by Patterson that I disliked. I know it's just my personal opinion. I don't usually enjoy stories where everyone lacks any ethical standards. I struggle to have compassion for them and simply wish they would face the consequences. And this story is exactly that. Everyone has a shady backstory they're keeping hidden from those around them. I only continued reading out of curiosity to see how it would all play out, only to find myself increasingly disbelieving at how outrageous the story became. Soap operas have more realism.

However, it's only fair to note that all the professional reviews I've seen of this book have praised it as one of his best. I guess it goes to show that I can be off the mark sometimes.

The writing was up to Patterson's usual standards, and the story moved along at a rapid pace. It was filled with numerous cliffhangers and plenty of action.

I can always, ALWAYS count on James Patterson to rip the rug out from under my feet when I read one of his books.

Even the ones I didn't really care for. With The Quickie, Patterson weaves a tale of betrayal and murder so tightly knit and intricate, the reader is left shocked and flabbergasted at the end.

This book is definitely one of those that delivers an ending you never saw coming.

Lauren Stillwell is a character any woman who has had an affair or a spouse suspected of having an affair can relate to.

On the outside, she is a tough, hard as nails, take no prisoners, NYPD homicide detective.

On the inside, she is a woman grieving over her inability to conceive and struggling with coming to terms with what her husband, Paul, is up to when she witnesses him entering a hotel with another woman.

Unfortunately, she doesn't make wise choices and in a moment of poor judgment decides to have an affair out of revenge.

Her spontaneous choice leads to disaster for Lauren at home and at work.

I enjoyed how the story unfolds layer upon layer of bad luck with every decision or action Lauren makes.

Just when you think you have figured it out, off comes another layer and once again you are blindsided by the result.

I also enjoyed the complexity of the characters. Throughout the story, I found it difficult to decide whose side to be on as the lines delineating the heroes from the villains are not clear.

This story may not be for everyone as Lauren does hold the blame for the mess she finds herself in, but many readers should enjoy the creative and interesting way she resolves it.

Overall, The Quickie is a thrilling and engaging read that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
