The Quickie

The worst book I have ever read is truly a disappointment.

From the very beginning, the plot seemed disjointed and lacked any real coherence. The characters were one-dimensional and failed to engage me on any emotional level.

The writing style was also rather dull and uninteresting, making it a chore to get through each page.

There were no real twists or turns in the story to keep me on the edge of my seat, and the ending was completely predictable.

In conclusion, this book is not worth anyone's time or money. It fails to deliver in almost every aspect and left me with a sense of dissatisfaction. I would highly recommend avoiding this book at all costs.

I have read better books by Patterson.

The first part of this book was a bit difficult. I didn't think the story was that strong.

All of a sudden, it changed. I got really into the story which became stronger. It gave me the impression that I was now reading a proper James Patterson book.

So I couldn't help but think that the first part was written by Michael Ledwidge, just like the last little bit of "The Affair". And that was suddenly not as good again.

Overall, it was a bit of a mixed bag. The beginning was slow and not very engaging, but then it picked up and became quite interesting. However, the ending seemed a bit rushed and not as well-developed as I would have liked.

Despite this, I still enjoy reading James Patterson's books and will probably pick up another one in the future.

Mary Stuart Masterson is an incredibly multi-talented actress. Since the tender age of 7, she has been delivering outstanding performances. But her talents don't stop there. She also writes and directs, and her skills as a narrator are on full display in this tricky, tantalizing, and at times torturous story.

With extensive experience behind the microphone, Masterson has given other highly listenable readings, such as those of Cornwell's Book of the Dead and The Predator. Her voice is so pure and distinct that it immediately brings to mind a classically trained actress.

Yet, her performances, whether as the revenge-driven wife in The Quickie or on screen in Fried Green Tomatoes, are always completely real and believable. When she describes "almost sawing through my plate" as her husband lies to her during dinner, we can truly feel her angst and are drawn into the story, concerned about her next move.

The heart of this story lies in what Lauren does next. She had planned to surprise her husband, Paul, for lunch. After checking with his assistant to ensure he would be in, she drove to his office. However, she gets the shock of her life when she sees him leaving the building and getting into a cab with a very attractive twenty-something blonde. Lauren follows them to the St. Regis, and as they enter the hotel, she cries, with the honking of taxis behind her.

Later that day, when she asks him what he did for lunch and he claims to have had a sandwich at his desk, it's a tense moment as she tries not to give away what she knows. What would any of us do in her situation?

Lauren is a tough cookie, and she decides that if her husband can have an affair, so can she. She plans to have a one-night stand with NYPD Scott Thayer. But things take a dark turn when Scott is murdered. Fearing that her husband may be the culprit, Lauren makes more mistakes in trying to cover up. However, her assumption about the killing may be completely wrong.

As always, Patterson does an excellent job of setting the scene and then keeping listeners on the edge of their seats with the twists and turns that follow. Don't even try to outguess Patterson and Ledwidge - just sit back and enjoy the ride!

This book initially began in a rather stagnant manner.

It seemed to lack the energy and excitement that one might expect from a captivating read.

However, as the story progressed to the halfway mark, everything changed.

It suddenly took on a life of its own, with more twists and turns than a winding mountain side road.

These unexpected developments kept the reader on the edge of their seat, eager to discover what would happen next.

Surprisingly, despite the provocative cover that hinted at something more intense and thrilling, the subject matter itself was actually quite mild.

This contrast between the cover and the content added an interesting layer of complexity to the overall reading experience.

Overall, this book proved to be a bit of a rollercoaster ride, with its slow start and then its sudden burst of excitement.

It left the reader with a sense of satisfaction and a desire to explore more of what the author had to offer.

I finished reading this book in just one day.

It was such an engaging and captivating read that I simply couldn't put it down.

I found myself completely immersed in the world that the author had created, and before I knew it, I had reached the end of the book.

It was a truly satisfying reading experience, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read.

I think this is my first read by James Patterson. I didn't particularly enjoy this story. It was, in my opinion, completely crazy. Halfway through the book, I was like "well, that escalated quickly."

Lauren, a NY detective, wants to surprise her husband at lunch one day. When she sees him walking out of his work building with a blonde woman, laughing and getting close to each other, her heart skips a beat. They get into a cab and drive to a hotel. Lauren follows them and, of course, immediately assumes that he is cheating on her.

She doesn't talk to her husband Paul about it. Instead, she just asks him about his day, and he lies to her. So, instead of sorting out their issues, she decides to have an affair too. They are both supposed to leave town for the weekend, but she cancels her flight and returns home. She calls her "lover," Scott, who is another cop from the same precinct. At first, she is hesitant, but in the end, she goes with him, and a one-night stand occurs.

Scott then says he will be back and goes to the garage. Meanwhile, Lauren decides to call her husband. She hears noise outside the window and looks out to see her husband Paul getting into a fight with Scott. Minutes later, one of them falls to the ground. It turns out that Paul has hit Scott pretty badly and is loading him into his car. Lauren can hear from inside the house that Scott is still breathing (I was rolling my eyes so hard). Anyway, hours later, the crime is reported because Scott's body is found in the park, all beaten up and shot in the face.

Lauren ends up being the lead detective in this investigation, but she is the only one who knows what happened. She tries to do everything to cover up and protect her husband. She also finds out that Scott was married and had 3 kids. The cops are looking into some cases that Scott worked undercover, and it turns out that two brothers, drug dealers, were a big deal. Coincidentally, some of the actions match their records, and the cops are convinced that the brothers had something to do with Scott's murder. One thing leads to another, and the younger brother ends up being shot by Lauren's partner Mike in a chase, and Scott's murder gets pinned on him. Case closed. But wait, it doesn't end here!

Like the story wasn't already messed up enough! In the beginning of the book, Lauren was waiting to hear back from her doctor about some blood work. She soon finds out that she is pregnant, after some time of trying and finding out that she is infertile. Her and her husband Paul are overjoyed, and this straightens their relationship. They both feel like they are back to where they are supposed to be. It turns out that the woman that Paul had lunch with that day is someone he was working with and who offered him a promotion or something similar, where he will be making a lot more money. So, they decide to have Lauren quit her job and move to a different town.

But before that happens, one night they are having dinner in town, and Paul takes her to see the house they will be living in. While there, they are attacked by the drug dealer's older brother, and Lauren gets kidnapped. She finds out that Scott was actually buddies with these drug dealers and that there is no way his little brother killed him. So, he knows that she was involved in his murder. This doesn't go far as Paul recovers from his head injury and drives on the highway, chasing the van that kidnapped Lauren. Cars slide off the road, this guy gets out to go shoot Lauren's husband, she tries to drive the van and run off, this guy runs back, gets in the car, hits her, grabs the keys, gets out of the car, and gets hit by a big truck. Well, isn't Lauren lucky? Also, the fact that she managed to blackmail the DA for a discrepancy that was found in Scott's case so she can stop him from looking into it. And her partner finding something else she hid, I have no idea how she could have done something like that so easily with no consequences. Anyway....

Paul and Lauren are now all happy at home, trying to sort out their things before they move when Lauren goes out to have breakfast with a friend of hers who was working in the lab, searching for DNA or anything else that could tell them more about Scott's murder. So, her friend hands her this envelope with DNA that was found on the picnic blanket the victim was wrapped in. It turns out that the same DNA was present in a robbery in DC 5 years ago. Knowing that her husband is the murderer, she starts wondering what happened in DC.

So, one day she follows her husband again, in a cab, while calling him. He lies about working late, and she sees that his cab is going towards the airport. She buys a ticket too and follows him on his flight to DC. She loses him after they arrive. But she has a friend in DC who helps her look at old files to find out about that robbery that Paul committed years ago. It turns out that he stole a lot of money from someone else. Anyway, she checks some paperwork and discovers a name that leads her to this house, and she sees Paul with a little girl. Long story short, Paul tells her what happened 5 years ago, about the robbery and how he slept with this woman who got accidentally pregnant, but he lies that he has not had a relationship with her since then. The little girl is asking for a picture of her little brothers to show to a friend, and this is how Lauren finds out that Paul is lying and that the woman he slept with is now pregnant with twins. Lauren gets angry and devastated because Paul was telling her that he can leave all this behind because now she is pregnant with his child and they can move away because of money and blah blah, when she admits to him that she saw him killing Scott that night because she was at his place. Paul starts laughing because he had no idea that she was cheating on him and tells her that he killed Scott because he was blackmailing him. They fight, she tries to arrest him, he pulls a gun on her, he drives away, she chases him, cops chase them, Paul runs into a pole on a bridge (?), and his car falls into the river. Lauren jumps to save him, he tries to strangle her, she kicks him and swims to the top, while he sinks in the car.

3 months after, she receives an envelope with the amount of money that Paul left in her name. She sends an amount to Scott's wife and then moves away where her partner (to whom she eventually told the truth) retired, and she raises her son there.

So, the story was crazy to me because of the events that happened. How some things magically worked in her favor. How all of a sudden this guy was a corrupt cop, her husband was a psychopath, and the easy blackmailing she pulled over the DA. She is supposed to be like the best detective in the Bronx, and I felt like the case didn't have that much concrete evidence to close it so quickly. There were so many questions unasked and some discrepancies that I am surprised that none of the other detectives looked into more. And then there were some cringy things here and there in the story, so that's why it's only 2 stars for me. I kept reading because I was actually curious what was going to happen next and I wanted to know how it would end.

Great book!

This book truly had me on the edge of my feet. From the very first page, it captured my attention and refused to let go. The story was filled with excitement, mystery, and unexpected twists that kept me guessing until the very end.

The characters were well-developed and relatable, making it easy for me to become invested in their lives and root for them. The author's writing style was engaging and流畅, allowing me to easily visualize the scenes and events as they unfolded.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good read. It's a page-turner that will keep you entertained from start to finish.
