Just absolutely fantastic.

5 glorious stars. I can't say enough just how much I love this book.

Aghhhh! SALVADOR DALÍ?!?!?! SIGN ME UP (but first, could you lift me up off of the floor? I'm pretty positive that I fainted)!

SO This edition is especially important to me because I LOVE different artists' visions & depictions of Wonderland/ this magical story, and how they are brought to life upon paper. I will never own enough editions of this fantastical, whimsical, wonderful book; and SALVADOR DALÍ?!?! Just oml.

If you're a Dalí lover... have traveled down the rabbit hole & through the looking glass (although this version only includes Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, not Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There) with Alice Liddell...

or are ANYONE AT ALLLLLL.......

CHECK.

THIS.

VERSION.

OUT!

It's a quick read (obviously) with history on Dalí and Carroll and such; which is so incredible and fascinating to read about.

PLUS there's always Dalí's wonderfully weird, genius art, whose works I personally absolutely love.

LOVELOVELOVELOVELOVE.

This book is truly a gem. The combination of Lewis Carroll's classic story and Salvador Dalí's unique illustrations makes it a must-have for any book lover. The history provided about both the author and the artist adds an extra layer of depth and interest. Whether you're a fan of Dalí's art or simply enjoy a good adventure, this version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is sure to delight. So don't hesitate, pick up a copy and let yourself be transported to the magical world of Wonderland.

I noticed that, similar to de kleine prins, the text had been slightly amended. The sums of money were in Euros, and the distances and currencies had also been changed. For example, there was no price on the mad hatter's hat.

I was intrigued to discover that the Dutch word for piglet is Big - Pig in English. I believe it's a mysterious word that seemingly emerged in the 13th century, so it was pleasant to come across a cognate.

Naturally, I purchased this book at Foyles bookshop on Charing Cross Road. This road used to be a fabled haven for booksellers, spoken of in hushed and awed tones. Twenty years ago, when I wandered there once a week or so, there were still some curious independent bookshops. Now, there are only a couple left, with the big Foyles store being the most prominent.

Surprisingly, they bought out the Grant and Cutler bookshop, which specialized in languages. It offered textbooks, learning aids, and literature in languages other than English. It was located on Great Poland Street (or somewhere with a similar name). I usually navigated there by passing through a certain department store on Oxford Street, exiting through their back door, and then walking up the road to the left to find the bookshop, rather than using a chart and astrolabe.

The Grant and Cutler bookshop was one of those narrow, overstocked shops where you had to make abrupt turns around corners, being careful not to knock over a pile of books as you went. However, all of this is beside the point because, as I mentioned, Foyles bought them and now has a nicely laid out languages department on one of their upper floors. The main delight of this department is not finding out how many languages Harry Potter (or for that matter, Alice in Wonderland) has been translated into, but that Foyles has a section of guidebooks to London published in Frisian.

So, if you are Frisian and happen to be in London and in need of a guidebook, Foyles was the place to go. However, I'm not sure if they were in North Frisian or in West Frisian...

I used to have a distinct dislike for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland during my childhood. It simply seemed too strange for my personal preferences. I was more inclined towards Roald Dahl's brand of eccentricity rather than Lewis Carroll's. However, recently, in search of something escapist and enjoyable to read at night, I decided to pick up Alice. I would read one chapter every night before going to sleep. In fact, I listened to the audiobook with Christopher Plummer's magnificent narration while following along on the text, mainly to欣赏 the illustrations.

To my surprise, I absolutely loved it.

There is an abundance of literature written on escapist fantasy tales and Carroll's classic. I don't believe I have anything particularly novel to contribute to the legacy of this book. Some individuals take this book far too seriously, criticizing and dissecting it. But I don't share that view. I'm content to have a book that can transport me into a world that defies logic and requires no explanations.

As the King said, “If there’s no meaning in it,’ said the King, ‘that saves a world of trouble, you know, as we needn’t try to find any. And yet I don’t know,’ he went on, spreading out the verses on his knee, and looking at them with one eye; ‘I seem to see some meaning in them, after all.” This book is a curious little journey ostensibly for children, but also a welcome escape for adults. It's a delightful blend of funny, lovely, cozy, bizarre, stupid, and mischievous elements. Yet, I can't help but sense a rather sad undertone. Carroll continuously reminds you, in every chapter, of how mad, bizarre, and irreverent everything is. In the real world, it can be tiresome, boring, overly rational, and not truly wonderful. If one takes refuge in psychedelics and hallucinogens, the world becomes weird and nonsensical, and you wouldn't want to remain in that fantasy world indefinitely either. Both worlds have their own form of craziness, and one has to come to terms with that.

That's the lesson I glean from this book. And I truly love it. I even wonder what it would be like to read it while under the influence. Of course, I'm just joking. Or am I?

As Father William said, “And yet you incessantly stand on your head – Do you think, at your age, it is right?’ ‘In my youth,’ Father William replied to his son, ‘I feared it might injure the brain; But, now that I‘m perfectly sure I have none, Why, I do it again and again.”

I highly recommend the audiobook by Christopher Plummer. He is an outstanding narrator who has crafted so many creative, unique, and distinctive voices for each character, elevating the experience of reading Alice to a whole new level of awesomeness. Although, he's given the Queen an angry German accent which somewhat reminds me of Hitler, and I'm not entirely certain if that's entirely appropriate. It's undeniably funny but perhaps a bit too stereotypical. Nevertheless, it's one of the best audiobook performances I've ever listened to.

** Update: The initial rating was four, but I haven't been able to get Alice out of my mind for the past week. It should be upgraded to a solid five.

Alice's adventure in Wonderland begins when she follows the rabbit down the hole.

Once there, she encounters a diverse cast of characters, some of whom are helpful and others who are simply evil.

In this strange world, every character has a story and a lesson to impart.

The Cheshire Cat and the Hatter are two of the most beloved characters, as they are both unique, quirky, and honest.

Despite their seemingly nonsensical behavior, they make perfect sense in the context of Wonderland.

Alice's journey through Wonderland is a captivating and magical experience that has delighted readers for generations.

It is a world full of surprises, where the rules of logic and reason do not always apply.

Whether you are a child or an adult, the story of Alice in Wonderland is sure to transport you to a world of imagination and wonder.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a truly enchanting tale.

As the story begins, Alice finds herself in a rather curious situation. She asks the Cat, "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?" And the Cat's response, "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," sets the tone for the absurdity that follows.

Alice's lack of concern for her destination leads to the Cat's conclusion that it doesn't matter which way she goes. But when Alice remarks that she doesn't want to go among mad people, the Cat reveals that they are all mad in this strange place.

The story then takes us on a wild ride through Wonderland, filled with all the memorable characters we know and love. From the hookah-smoking caterpillar to the Cheshire Cat with its mischievous grin, from the Mad Hatter's tea party to the menacing Queen of Hearts, it's a world of delightful nonsense.

What makes this book so special is that it was one of the first children's books written纯粹 for entertainment. It's a fun and ridiculous story, full of rhyming poems and plays on words that will surely bring a smile to your face.

If you've never read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, I highly recommend it, especially if you have young readers in your life. It's a classic that has stood the test of time and continues to captivate audiences of all ages.

Overall, it is a remarkable work that showcases the power of creativity and the ability to break free from the ordinary.

Whether you are a fan of traditional storytelling or enjoy exploring more unconventional narratives, this story is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Absurd...VERY ABSURD.

But still a classic that has endured through the ages. "Alice in Wonderland" is a tale that takes readers on a wild and whimsical journey through a land filled with strange creatures and nonsensical events.

The story follows young Alice as she tumbles down a rabbit hole and into a world where nothing is as it seems. From the Cheshire Cat with its mysterious grin to the Mad Hatter's tea party, every encounter is both baffling and enchanting.

The vivid illustrations, such as the one shown here, add to the magical atmosphere of the book. They bring to life the strange and wonderful characters and settings, making it easy for readers to lose themselves in the story.

Despite its absurdity, "Alice in Wonderland" has a charm that continues to吸引 readers of all ages. It is a book that encourages imagination and creativity, and reminds us that sometimes, the most nonsensical things can be the most beautiful.

Woah, I must admit that I did not appreciate this book at all before. That's precisely why I gave it only 3 stars previously. However, now that I'm engaged in writing an analysis paper about it, I have truly come to see the genius that lies behind this remarkable novel. Lewis Carroll, without a doubt, had a brilliant mind. His ability to create such a unique and imaginative world is truly astonishing. The complex characters, the intricate plotlines, and the thought-provoking themes all contribute to making this book a literary masterpiece. It's as if Carroll had access to a realm of ideas and creativity that is beyond the reach of most. As I delved deeper into the analysis, I discovered new layers of meaning and beauty that I had completely overlooked before. This experience has taught me the importance of reevaluating things and not judging them too hastily. I now have a newfound respect and admiration for this book and its author.

I honestly don't know what to rate this book because I don't even know how I feel about it.

On one hand, I am bitter about certain aspects. But then I start to wonder why I am bitter about them when I have clearly seen weirder things in some other books. Why does this particular book make me feel any different?

If anything, this book encourages the imagination to grow! It takes you on a wild and wonderful journey that challenges your perception of reality.

However, I really hate Alice. She's more annoying than all the adults in "A Series of Unfortunate Events" put together! Her actions and decisions often leave me frustrated and shaking my head.

I read this book more than a decade ago and don't remember a single thing. But now, thanks to the irl book club whose one of the books of the month is this with the theme being 'Tea' related, I am rereading it.

I wonder how I will feel now. Will I still have the same mixed emotions? Or will I discover something new and wonderful that I missed the first time around? Only time will tell.

I must admit that I never read Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It just never called to me as a child.

Here we are in isolation and so I went to stories.audible.com. I received an email at the start of the pandemic to spread the word that the site had over 200 books available for free. I told all of my students and the followers of my blog and consequently have “read” several books while doing household chores.

When I saw that this story was “performed” by Scarlett Johansson I was intrigued. Then, I saw that it was only 3 and a half hours investment in time. I decided to give it a try.

I liked it a lot. The story is whimsical and full of strange and wonderful characters and events. I strongly suspect that Carroll was under the influence of either mushrooms or weed, because some of the plot lines just don’t track well. But that’s part of the charm of the story.

Even so, I would strongly recommend this book to anyone looking for a unique and entertaining read. It’s odd, classic, and definitely a memorable experience. Whether you read it as a child or as an adult, it’s sure to capture your imagination and take you on a wild ride.

So, if you haven’t read Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland yet, I encourage you to give it a chance. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it.

I may have enjoyed this more if I owned a hookah.

It does have clever wordplay, I'll give it that. The concept of enjoying something more based on the possession of a particular item is quite interesting. It makes one wonder about the role that material possessions play in our experiences and perceptions.

Maybe it's not just about the hookah itself, but the associations and atmosphere that it brings. The clever wordplay in this statement also adds an element of charm and wit. It makes the sentence more engaging and memorable.

Overall, while I may not own a hookah, I can still appreciate the thought-provoking nature of this statement and the clever use of language within it.

It serves as a reminder that sometimes, our enjoyment of things can be influenced by the most unexpected factors.
