I truly wish this could have been a full-length adult novel!! The premise upon which this story is built is absolutely wonderful. It has so much potential to explore complex themes and emotions.

However, it should be noted that the book was actually intended for a younger crowd. As a result, in its execution, it ended up lacking the depth that I had initially hoped for.

I understand that it's not entirely fair to hold a children's book to the same standards as an adult novel. After all, the target audience is different, and the book is designed to meet the needs and capabilities of younger readers.

Nonetheless, this lack of depth did affect my personal enjoyment of the book to a certain extent. Overall, I would rate it as a 3.5 out of 5. It's still a good book, especially for its intended audience, but it just didn't quite reach the level of excellence that I was hoping for.

Lowry uses the device of "benevolent aliens trying to understand humans" with the 'dream-givers' to explain much of the action. One of the dream-givers, the "Littlest One," is a newborn who has to ask many questions about the world. She quickly shows a remarkable talent for extracting memories from significant objects and creating dreams. Meanwhile, John, a seven-year-old boy, has been through a lot. Social services took him from his unmarried parents and placed him in foster care, where he has been further wounded. He arrives at his third foster home talking about murder, hatred, and torture. The kind old woman who takes him in is unfailingly loving and compassionate, perhaps a bit too much so.

One interesting aspect that could have been developed more is the idea that the Sinisteeds are dream-givers who have gone bad because they delved too deeply into human memories. This idea of humans as toxic charges is hinted at but not fully explored. The book also doesn't show any of the dream-giver protagonists being tempted to dig for deeper memories or offer any redemption for the Sinisteeds. Overall, this is a nice quick read for junior high or high school students, but it may be too intense for younger children due to the abuse and John's behavior. The book is fun, but it also contains a fair amount of dark material.

I embarked on reading this on the very last day when one of my dearest friends reached out to me for the ultimate time. I completed it just a day subsequent to his birthday. All of this serves to highlight the irony that, during the later phases of our friendship, he messaged me regarding his dreams - both the truly wonderful and the truly awful. It was incredibly difficult not to think of him as I delved into this reading.

I earnestly hope that when he retired to bed on that final night, Gossamer was by his bedside, tenderly guiding him towards paradise.

I originally obtained it for a reading challenge, yet I never managed to get around to reading it.

Moreover, I had no idea what it was actually about.

In fact, I mistakenly thought it was related to gaming.

The reason being that if you remove the 'oss' from the title, you are left with 'gamer', which somehow tricked my perception.

Anyway, I truly wish I had read this book before.

Despite being a short book, it is so beautifully written, lovely, and filled with magic.

It has a really heartwarming quality that touches the soul.

It makes me realize that sometimes, the books we overlook can hold hidden treasures that we are missing out on.

I am now determined to explore more of the books on my shelf and not let them gather dust any longer.

This book has served as a reminder that there is always something wonderful waiting to be discovered within the pages of a book.

I absolutely LOVE Lois Lowry! Her story telling skills never cease to amaze me. Once again, she has crafted a story that is deceptively simple on the surface yet incredibly complex beneath. In just under 150 pages, she has managed to bring to life an entire "imaginary" world and develop three fully-fledged human characters, all while maintaining the integrity of the theme and conflict.

Gossamer is a truly wonderful character, with her unique qualities and charm. Fastidious, on the other hand, annoys me in just the right way, adding an interesting layer to the story. And I have nothing but admiration for Thin Elderly's patience with Gossamer/Littlest. John is a realistic character, given all that he has endured. I feel a great deal of sympathy for both the older woman and John's mother, who is trying so hard to pick up the pieces of her life after an abusive marriage.

Lowry's ability to blend this dream world with real life and seamlessly weave the two story lines together is truly remarkable. It is a testament to her skill as a writer. I highly recommend this book to adults, children, and Lois Lowry fans alike. In fact, I recommend it to anyone who dreams, loves, and understands what it means to lose and, more importantly, to gain.
