I first read this little book many years ago. I had already enjoyed several other books by the same author, so I decided to pick this one up as well. For some unknown reason, it has always remained in my mind. The delicacy and beauty of the story, the thin wisp of a character, and the dreams - all of these elements have left a lasting impression on me. I think it was because of this book that I have always been fascinated by dreams and nightmares, as well as by tiny little fantasy creatures.

What I had forgotten was how incredibly heartfelt and powerful the story truly is. This little book packs a serious punch! I had completely forgotten the story of the dreamers, and wow, it really got to me this time around. I listened to the audio book while on a road trip, and the narrator did an outstanding job.

Stylistically, the book is simply charming. Lowry seamlessly switches back and forth between the dream-givers and the dreamers, slowly revealing a potent little story. It has the effect of a mystery, which I absolutely love. We learn along with Littlest and grow with her throughout the tale. And I have always been fascinated by the unique creatures that Lowry has created. The book holds a certain nostalgia for me, but to be honest, I don't think I fully appreciated the craftsmanship the first time I read it.

Yes, it is a children's book, but Lowry delicately touches on some deep themes that really resonate with me. There is a lot of emotion packed into such a small package. I do wonder if, had it been a story for an older audience, the climax might have been a little different. Part of me wishes it could have been a bit grander, deeper, and more twisty. But another part of me finds comfort in its simplicity. And I understand that it is meant for a younger readership, so it makes perfect sense.

Anyway, this book has stayed with me for over a decade, and now I finally understand why. I'm so glad to have reread it. I highly recommend it! However, it's important to note that the characters in the book deal with an abusive home situation. Although it is tactfully portrayed, it can still be quite rough if you really understand the depth of what's happening. It might be worth having a discussion with your kids about this, but there is nothing overly graphic in the book.

I owned this book when I was a kid. However, I didn't remember a great deal of it. Interestingly, it is heavier than what I would have expected. I truly love the imagination that lies behind this book. It is filled with such wonderful and unique ideas that it really captures the reader's attention. I just wish that the story was even longer. There is so much potential within this beautiful and interesting narrative that I feel it could have been expanded further to explore more of its depths and details. I can't help but think about how much more enjoyment and discovery there could have been if the author had taken the opportunity to make it a bit lengthier.
