The first half of the book is meticulous and scientifically backed, right down to the sterile details. It presents a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of the subject, leaving no stone unturned.

The second half, on the other hand, is wonderful and imaginative. However, it leans towards spiritual make believe, which may cause some readers to question its authenticity.

Surprisingly, the methods on dream induction and recall outlined in this book do work, as I can attest to in an anecdotal fashion. This is ironic because I believe some of the anecdotes included in the book, along with the blend of Freudian and Jungian discourse in the latter half, almost undermine the credibility of the first half in a straw man way.

That being said, I don't think the book makes the same claims as it did for the research behind sleep and dreaming. But I couldn't quite get rid of the feeling that the psychology course I was enrolled in had turned into a crash course on spirituality and the opening of my inward-facing third eye.

Someday soon, I hope I can come back and say I was proven wrong.

I initially gave this book a rating of 3/5. However, something truly remarkable happened. The night after I finished reading the book, I had lucid dreams. It was an experience like no other.

I could clearly control my actions and thoughts within the dream. It was as if I had entered a whole new world where I was in complete control.

This unexpected outcome made me realize the true power and potential of this book. It had a profound impact on my subconscious mind and opened up a new realm of possibilities.

As a result, I have decided to change my rating from 3/5 to 5/5. This book truly works and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in exploring the mysteries of the subconscious and having unique dream experiences.

Overall, this is a truly fantastic book on the topic of lucid dreaming.

It presents a wealth of techniques and their various uses, while also delving into scientific theory, conjectures, and even offering some fascinating glimpses into the history of the research of lucid dreaming.

However, in my personal opinion, the book is a bit on the bloated side. I believe that almost all of the dream reports included are rather unnecessary and do not add significant value to the overall content.

Moreover, there were a couple of new-age-y and self-help-book-like ideas presented that really annoyed me. These elements seemed out of place and detracted from the otherwise solid scientific and practical aspects of the book.

Nonetheless, despite these drawbacks, the book still contains a great deal of useful information and is definitely worth reading for anyone interested in the subject of lucid dreaming.

A wonderful book.

LaBerge is extremely clear, concise and rigorous. There isn't a single word out of place, and there is no lack of any scientific reference to support his arguments.

It is at a much higher level than the various books I have read on this topic. Making a comparison with others would mean minimizing it.

He has a brilliant mind like few others.

This book is truly a gem. It offers in-depth insights and a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.

The clarity of LaBerge's writing allows the reader to easily follow his train of thought and grasp the complex ideas he presents.

His use of scientific references adds credibility and authenticity to his arguments, making it a reliable source of information.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the topic. It is sure to expand your knowledge and leave you with a new perspective.

I've got a few books on the topic now. After taking an interest in the concept as a way to treat nightmares that become increasingly horrible at times of stress, I have been exploring different resources.

This book, however, was the only one that truly gripped me as I read it. It is filled with plenty of examples and techniques that offer valuable insights.

Although I've had limited success so far, it has made me more focused and more comfortable with the idea of sleeping. In my opinion, this is a win-win situation.

If you have an interest in this topic, I would highly recommend grabbing this book first. Then, if you need to, you can add to your collection. I, for one, will be exploring more books and will review further titles.

After reading this book, I also picked up the audiobook, and I can't stress enough how beneficial this combination is. It helps a great deal with implementing the techniques.

I'm not typically a big fan of nonfiction books.

So, it's understandable that I was very apprehensive before I began reading.

I didn't expect to enjoy it at all.

However, this book completely proved me wrong.

I've always been fascinated by the science of dreaming.

A few years ago, I learned about Stephen LaBerge.

Many people view dreaming as a religious or spiritual experience that is unexplainable.

But seeing it from a purely scientific perspective was truly very refreshing.

It taught me numerous new things about the topic.

We spend nearly half of our lives sleeping.

So, why not learn to appreciate and understand dreams?

Many of the common beliefs are incorrect.

And seeing this book disprove them and guide its readers in the right direction was extremely interesting.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to understand what we spend half of our lives doing, which is sleeping.

Is sleeping through your dreams truly the optimal utilization of your limited lifespan?

Not only are you frittering away a portion of your finite time on earth, but you're also forfeiting adventures and lessons that could enhance the remainder of your life.

If you were fully lucid, you'd realize that the entire dream world is your own creation. With this awareness might come an electrifying sense of freedom.

Nothing external, no social or physical laws, would restrict your experience; you could do anything your mind could envision.

Inspired by this, you might soar to the heavens. You might summon the courage to confront someone or something you've been evading.

You might choose an erotic encounter with the most desirable partner you can imagine. You might visit a deceased loved one you've been longing to speak with.

You might seek self-knowledge and wisdom.

Changes in brain waves, eye movements, and muscle tone are employed to define the two states.

I was certain that lucid dreaming was a reality, but how could I prove it to others?

During the night, I had a lucid dream in which I moved my eyes left-right-left-right.

The next morning, when we examined the polygraph record, we discovered the eye movement signals in the middle of a REM period.

Don't let others impose their personal fears on you.

You should养成 the habit of asking yourself this question the moment you wake up: “What was I dreaming?”

Do this first, or you'll forget some or all of your dream due to interference from other thoughts.

Don't change your position upon awakening, as any body movement may make it harder to remember your dream.

Also, don't think about the day's concerns, as this too can erase your dream recall.

The probability of having a lucid dream during the last two hours of sleep is more than twice as high as that during the previous six hours.

1. Set your alarm. Before going to bed, set your alarm to wake you up two to three hours earlier than usual, and go to sleep at your normal time.

2. Get out of bed promptly in the morning. When your alarm goes off, get out of bed immediately. You'll stay awake for two or three hours.

Go about your business until about a half hour before going back to bed.

3. Focus on your intentions for your lucid dreams. For the half hour before you return to sleep, think about what you want to achieve in your lucid dream: where you want to go, who you want to see, or what you want to do.

You can use this time to incubate a dream about a particular topic.

If you're working on any of the applications in the later chapters of this book, this is a good time to practice the exercises for those applications.

4. Return to bed and practice an induction technique. After two or three hours have passed since you woke up, ensure your sleeping place will be quiet and undisturbed for the next couple of hours.

Go to bed and practice the induction technique that works best for you. Techniques are provided in the next two chapters.

5. Give yourself at least two hours to sleep. Set your alarm or have someone wake you up if you prefer, but make sure to give yourself two hours to dream.

You're likely to have at least one long REM period in this time, perhaps two.

The morning hours are ideal for lucid dreaming for another reason.

Although it takes us an hour to an hour and a half to reach REM sleep at the start of the night, after several hours of sleep, we often can enter REM only a few minutes after waking up.

Sometimes we can wake up from a dream and reenter it moments later.

These facts make possible another type of lucid dream – the wake-initiated lucid dream, which is discussed in Chapter 4.

An interesting exploration of taking control of your own (literal) dreams.

It truly engages the reader in a thought-provoking journey. Reading it has indeed led me to experience more vivid dreaming. However, I haven't managed to cross the lucidity threshold just yet. But there's still time, and I remain hopeful.

This is one of those books that, in my opinion, could have been a whole lot shorter without losing the basic message. The content seems to be somewhat repetitive at times, which might have made the reading experience a bit less smooth. Nevertheless, the core concept of learning to control one's dreams is fascinating and holds great potential.

I look forward to delving deeper into this topic and perhaps one day achieving the elusive state of lucid dreaming.

A comprehensive book on lucid dreaming delves into numerous topics, and the exercises it presents are highly effective. :) I have witnessed a significant increase in my dream recall, and I am now able to recognize that I am dreaming on most nights, as opposed to maybe just once a month before. Additionally, since commencing with this book, I have experienced more lucid dreams. Everything within the book is scientifically supported, and a wide variety of exercises are provided in case some do not prove successful for certain individuals.

However, I gave it a 1-star start because the writing was overly scientific and a bit challenging to penetrate.

Nonetheless, it accomplished its intended purpose!

The concept of lucid dreaming and attaining the skill of becoming aware during dreams has intrigued me from my childhood. I have possessed this book for numerous years. However, it was only when I began to take lucid dreaming seriously during the past summer that I made the decision to pick it up and apply what I learned.

I gained far more from this book than merely lucid dreaming induction methods. LaBerge delves into human perception and how it entirely governs dream events, which I found to be extremely enlightening. He includes dream accounts from individuals all over the US, which I found captivating. The final chapter of this book even touches on uncovering the meaning of life and was profound, unlike anything I had ever read before. This book offers the reader much more than just a basic how-to guide. It is an in-depth exploration of the dreams we have and how they can be utilized to discover the "hidden secrets" of life and enable us to "wake up."

Since commencing this book, I have had approximately 5 out of 10 lucid dreams, and my journey is far from over; it has just begun. This book holds a special place in my heart and is one that I would recommend to everyone.

“I am not saying that lucid dreaming is the same thing as enlightenment, only that a comparison of the two levels of awareness in dreams can show us how there might be a level of understanding of our waking lives far beyond our present one” pg 300.
