After delving into the first four books, each spotlighting one of the original four sons, I eagerly anticipated a comprehensive family history. A touch of time-traveling seemed like a perfect means to bridge the gap from the original McKettrick four in the 1880s to their descendants in contemporary times, didn't it? I certainly thought so. However, this novel disappoints in fully developing the family history.

A highly promising photo album and a remembrance book (a sort of journal) could have neatly filled in the blanks if they had been incorporated earlier in the story. Regrettably, these items merely list the children of Holt and Lorelei (the eldest son and the last one to marry) near the conclusion of this particular tale. To make matters worse, there is a brief mention at the beginning of the novel of Jesse, a descendant of the youngest brother Jeb, leaving the reader with a vast void and numerous questions!

But hold on! Perhaps the significant gaps left by this book in the McKettrick family narrative serve the author's purpose splendidly. Curious readers are more inclined to continue investing in the series, both emotionally and financially. Having skipped a generation from a detailed portrayal of the four brothers in the 1880s to (some of?) the grandchildren of the eldest brother, maybe we can anticipate some extremely interesting reading ahead and a series that persists indefinitely...
