Every time it's my turn to accompany my nine-year-old grandson to school, he asks me: "Will you tell me a story?" And I tell him about the Bible, the Iliad, the Odyssey, Boccaccio, Pirandello... This morning I took on "The Jar," only to discover that I didn't remember it as well as I thought. Because the classics are those books that we all believe we know by heart, but when we reread them, we always discover something new.

"Citrons", "The Voice" and "The Fly" are such minutiae that they gradually grow in our understanding. As time passes, their significance keeps expanding until they eventually overwhelm our conscious mind. At this crucial point, we are faced with a difficult choice. We can either opt for a lonely redemption, which might seem a rather solitary and perhaps arduous path. Or, on the other hand, we could choose schadenfreude, that is, taking pleasure in the misfortunes of others. However, neither of these options seems to truly suit us. But then again, these were the only choices available in fin de siècle Sicily. It was a time and place where such dilemmas were part of the fabric of life, and people had to grapple with these difficult decisions, trying to find a way that would somehow make sense in their complex and often challenging world.

I have only read some of Pirandello's short stories.

However, they are all little masterpieces.
