I have a great deal of trouble finishing this book.

Although it is a classic, the stories within it are becoming more and more frustrating.

Moreover, I have an abundance of books on my to-be-read (TBR) list that are likely to be more interesting. XD

****

In an effort to reduce the size of my TBR pile, I am persevering with this book.

However, it is true that this book is not to my taste.

Even though I have found some of the stories to be interesting, overall, it does not hold my attention as much as I would like.

I hope that by the time I finish this book, I will have made a significant dent in my TBR pile and can move on to more engaging reads.

Grandissimo classico is a term that evokes a sense of grandeur and elegance. It represents the highest level of quality and sophistication in a particular field or category.

This term is often associated with classical music, where it refers to the most renowned and influential compositions and composers. Grandissimo classico pieces are characterized by their complex melodies, rich harmonies, and masterful orchestration.

However, the concept of grandissimo classico can also be applied to other areas such as art, literature, and fashion. In art, it might describe a painting or sculpture that is of outstanding beauty and craftsmanship. In literature, it could refer to a classic novel or poem that has stood the test of time. And in fashion, it might denote a collection or design that exudes timeless style and grace.

Overall, grandissimo classico is a term that connotes excellence, refinement, and a sense of timelessness. It is a standard that is aspired to by many and achieved by only a few.

Gradevolissima e ironica questa novella di Pirandello. It presents a contrast between the miserly and cantankerous landowner, Don Lollò, and the artisan Zi' Dima.

The center of the story is, of course, a precious oil jar that, despite the careful handling, breaks inexplicably.

Don Lollò summons the artisan Zi' Dima to repair it quickly, as the olive harvest is in full swing. Zi' Dima is famous for his miraculous hammer-proof putty, but Don Lollò doesn't trust it and demands a more classic and tested technique. The artisan complies, albeit reluctantly, but foolishly seals himself inside the jar.

And now? How can the prisoner be released without breaking the jar?

Truly entertaining is this paradoxical situation where the attachment to things takes over. I think it's precisely the moment to discover the work of my compatriot.

Alternative Title: The Timeline of a Broken Plate. And it is as shocking as it sounds (i.e., not at all).

Yes, it touches on simplicity and naivety in an indeterminately humorous way. However, I am still trying to understand why Pirandello has a Nobel Prize in Literature.

This article seems to present a somewhat lighthearted and perhaps even slightly critical view of Pirandello's work. The mention of the broken plate's timeline might be used as a metaphor or a simple anecdote to illustrate a point about the author's style or the nature of his writing.

The fact that the author is struggling to understand why Pirandello received the Nobel Prize suggests that there may be some aspects of his work that are not immediately obvious or that the author has yet to fully appreciate.

Perhaps further exploration and analysis of Pirandello's works would help the author gain a better understanding of his literary achievements and the reasons behind his Nobel Prize.

Overall, this article leaves the reader with a sense of curiosity and a desire to learn more about Pirandello and his writing.

The article seems to be a bit short and lacking in specific details. Here is an expanded version:

There is a particular something, and this very one has been released on Novellix! It's not just any ordinary thing. Maybe it's a new product, a revolutionary idea, or an exciting project. The fact that it has made its debut on Novellix gives it an air of significance. Novellix is likely a platform or a place that holds some importance in the relevant field. This release could potentially attract a lot of attention and generate interest among various audiences. It might open up new opportunities, spark discussions, and even lead to further developments. The anticipation surrounding this release is palpable, and everyone is eager to see what it has in store. Whether it will meet the expectations or exceed them remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure - this release on Novellix is definitely a notable event.

Citrons From Sicily

Citrons From Sicily initially gives the impression of a romantic tale. However, a more in-depth perusal reveals that its main theme revolves around class structures. Micuccio, who represents the lower class, is depicted as timid and unsure, clad in tattered clothes. In contrast, Teresina, representing the high class, is described as boisterous and loud with laughter, dressed in fine attire.

In the story, Micuccio has little to no power. Teresina is the one who makes all the decisions, which is an allusion to the power differences between the classes. Higher class individuals hold more sway over those of the lower class. These two characters, who were once from similar classes and in love, have drifted apart. This is because of Teresina's rise to fame and fortune, which would not have occurred without Micuccio's investment.

Micuccio comes bearing citrons for Teresina, perhaps hoping to ask for her hand in marriage. But Teresina is preoccupied in the saloon, entertaining gentleman fans. It is implied that she has taken a lover out of wedlock, raising questions about her morality and, by extension, the morality of the upper class. Micuccio, on the other hand, has remained faithful to the idea of marrying Teresina and has maintained his morality throughout the story. This suggests that Pirandello is suggesting that the lower class possesses a morality that the upper class lacks.

Upon learning of Teresina's infidelity, Micuccio leaves. The only thing he leaves behind is his bag full of citrons, which symbolize status as only the rich in Northern Italy could usually afford them. Teresina, upon discovering Micuccio's gift, promptly distributes them to the gentlemen in the saloon. This shows that Micuccio's gift of fame and fortune is now being freely given to strangers, while he is left with nothing.

I had the good fortune to come across the short stories of the remarkable Italian playwright Luigi Pirandello. This collection of eleven shorts delves deep into the nature of simple emotions and human relations on a psychological level. The tragedy and farce of human life are expertly balanced in Pirandello's works.

"Citrons from Sicily" tells the story of Micuccio, who travels to the city to claim his former love, Teresina, now a famous singer. With her old image in his mind, Micuccio is shocked by what he sees; the innocent Teresina has become a loud, brazen woman. Her mother tries to console Micuccio, who had helped them in their difficult times. In the end, the distraught Micuccio leaves them with a gift of oranges.

"With Other Eyes" is about a wife who experiences a range of emotions when she finds an old picture of her husband's first wife. Love, jealousy, denial, pride, and self-pity all contribute to her realization of her unhappy marriage.

In "A Voice", the rich but blind Marchese has fallen in love with his nurse, Lydia. However, when a doctor accuses her of keeping her fiancé blind to secure his wealth, she rethinks their engagement.

"The Fly" is a powerful story about two brothers and their cousin who is dying. When one of the brothers catches the same disease, it becomes a tale of selfishness and jealousy.

"The Oil Jar" is a humorous story about a cruel Don Zirafa who mistreats his workers. His arrogance leads to a series of farcical events that make him the laughingstock of the village.

"It's Not to be Taken Seriously" is a brilliant sketch of the character Perazzetti, who has an active and capricious imagination. The story is both entertaining and introspective.

"Think it Over, Giacomino!" is about an aged professor who wants to ensure the financial security of his young wife and child after his death. However, his good intentions backfire.

"A Character's Tragedy" is my favorite story in the collection. It explores the relationship between a writer and his characters and denounces plagiarism.

"A Prancing Horse" is an absurd story about two horses who don't understand their job of carrying hearses.

The last story, "Mrs. Frola & Mr. Ponza, Her Son-in-law", is a fascinating tale of two people who accuse each other of being insane. The circumstances are so believable that the reader is left wondering who is telling the truth.

Credit must be given to the translator Stanley Applebaum for his excellent work in bringing these stories, the dialogue, and the masterful characterization to life.

MY RATINGS:

1. Little Hut – Sicilian Sketch 1/5

2. Citrons from Sicily 5/5

3. With other eyes 4/5

4. A voice 4/5

5. The fly. 4/5

6. The oil jar 4/5

7. It’s not to be taken seriously 4/5

8. Think it over, Giacomino 3/5

9. A character’s Tragedy 5/5

Le catene del verismo.

When approaching the theater, one cannot but pass, and as soon as possible, by the absolute genius that was Luigi Pirandello. This is especially because, in addition to making a decisive contribution to the development of this art in Italy, he played a decisive role in freeing Italian literature from the dryness of verismo. If it is reduced to a flat representation of the real, if we refuse to get out of a flat and mechanistic view of the world, art suffocates and does not do what is its very reason for being: to find a way out.

Much of Pirandello's art is ultimately the effort of the self to free itself from these chains, the effort to be what one is and not what the world (others? society?) wants us to be.

If this revolutionary innovation of the entire twentieth century is well read in the novels (even the earliest - Il fu Mattia Pascal), the short stories, and especially those set in Sicily, remain anchored to a point of passage. It is that especially within this too large genre, the debt to Verga and Capuana is still too great, the bond of the genius of Girgenti with his land is still too tight to only look forward.

But perhaps it is precisely for this "being in the middle" that reading the short stories for a year (or even just this very successful synthesis) is worth it. Because it allows us to understand what the passage was from positivism to the avant-garde, from verismo to the psychological novel, from the Belle Epoque to the First World War, in short, from the nineteenth century to our days. And it cannot be a coincidence that the dull and boring Sicily of the Malavoglia is colored for the first time precisely with Pirandello with a revolutionary dramatic charge, a strong human pulsation, but also with a revolutionary vitality.

Pirandello's short stories were a part of my adolescence (they are the classic holiday assignment given in the first or second year of high school, so to speak) and it is not, cannot be a coincidence that Ciaula, Zì Dima, and all the others have been among the few who have resisted all this time among my memories, and have done so with a minimum of sympathy. Because that sad smile, that humorous smile, someone would say, the genius of Girgenti knew how to tear even from fifteen-year-old boys. And excuse me if it's little.

Cheerful and ironic stories about different cases, disputes or difficult situations and witty solutions. "The Cistern", perhaps, is the most colorful story. Due to the perseverance and interference with unsolicited advice of the owner Don Lollo, the master, Uncle Dino, who was entrusted not only to glue (as the master proposed) a new, huge - 200 liters, cistern broken by someone, but also to sew it with wire, got stuck in the cistern. In order for him to get out of there, the subordinate utensil needs to be broken. How the situation was resolved, you will find out by reading this witty story. The other stories are also good.

These stories offer a unique blend of humor and practical wisdom. They take ordinary situations and turn them into something extraordinary and entertaining. Whether it's a dispute between neighbors or a complex problem at work, the characters in these stories always find a way to solve the issue with a touch of irony and wit.

The story of "The Cistern" is particularly engaging. It shows how a simple task can turn into a hilarious adventure. Uncle Dino's attempts to fix the cistern and his subsequent predicament make for a great read. The way the situation is resolved is both unexpected and satisfying.

Overall, these stories are a great source of entertainment and inspiration. They remind us that even in the most difficult situations, there is always a way to find humor and a solution.
