A few weeks ago, I embarked on a rather unique endeavor. I dedicated myself to conducting a mini-seminar all by myself. In this self-imposed study, I delved deep into every poem found here. I utilized a variety of resources for my analysis, including online analysis tools, her personal journals, her letters, and of course, the renowned "The Bell Jar".

I'm not entirely certain why I felt the need to undertake this task. It was almost an instinctive urge within me. Maybe it was my longing to understand Sylvia Plath on a deeper level.

Anyway, I have an unwavering love for Sylvia. Ever since my college days, I have always felt a special connection to her. This connection has ebbed and flowed in phases over the years. But this latest exploration of her works has reaffirmed my admiration and connection to her. It's a journey that I'm glad I took. :)

Ariel... It makes us deeply reflect on what we lost when we lost Sylvia Plath.

Her ferocity was truly remarkable. She penned these poems in a frenzy of creativity, like a firestorm fueled by the desperate need to be understood and the compulsion to explicate personal truth. Here, she delved into the horror of existence, a force that can sometimes be stronger than the urge to live.

Ariel is not merely the spirit in The Tempest; it is also a horse that ran away with her. What is that plunging power that lies beyond her control? It is beautiful, yet chilling, and unarguable.

I probably understood less than 20% of this collection to be honest. It's a complex and often enigmatic body of work. But despite my limited comprehension, I'm haunted by the power of Plath's fury and language. Her words seem to leap off the page, filled with a raw intensity that is both captivating and disturbing. The way she uses language to express her emotions is truly remarkable. It's as if she is able to channel all of her pain, anger, and frustration into her writing, creating a force that is almost palpable. Even when I don't fully understand what she is trying to say, I can feel the power of her words, and it leaves a lasting impression on me.

Frieda Hughes, Sylvia Plath's daughter, has made some really interesting comments on this topic.

It makes one wonder if Sylvia Plath would truly be as famous and highly appreciated for her writing as she is today if she hadn't met her tragic end in the way she did.

Her depressed image has been so romanticized over the years. People seem to remember her more for the pain she endured rather than seeing her as a whole human being with all her complexities and qualities.

It's a thought-provoking question. Maybe her writing would still have gained recognition, but perhaps not to the same extent.

The way she died has almost become an integral part of her legend, overshadowing some of the other aspects of her life and work.

It makes us reflect on how much an artist's personal story and the circumstances of their death can influence the perception and reception of their art.

Four Stars.

It was a magical experience....

Once again, I felt that evaluating this work was quite challenging for me as I don't have enough experience or knowledge to fundamentally assess it. My evaluation is mainly based on the very strong emotions (very intense) that most of these poems gave me!! This collection of poems has a very distinct personality. I felt that if it was Silvia herself who wasn't supposed to publish them, I wouldn't have read them :/ + There is a Twitter user who decides to read them and might pass by here (Silvia speaks in more than one poem about death, her suicidal thoughts, and her previous attempts).

+ Her poems were very obscure?? (At least for me 0-0). I mean, I had to go through and interpret each existing poem because I!!! couldn't!!! understand!!!! + Some of the poems have more than one interpretation even...

I'm not a huge enthusiast when it comes to reading poetry. However, Sylvia Plath has always held an endless allure for me, which is why I decided to pick up this particular work. To my great surprise, I discovered that reading it was incredibly pleasurable. I was so captivated by these poems that I have made up my mind to purchase it for my personal collection. These are the kind of poems that have the power to make you want to read them over and over again. In fact, this experience has even inspired me to expand my literary horizons and explore the works of other poets as well. I can't wait to see what other hidden gems of poetry await me.

Sylvia Plath's "Ariel: The Restored Edition" is a remarkable work. Her daughter Frieda Hughes' foreword offers an interesting perspective, suggesting that her father wasn't as bad as often portrayed and that her mother's poems in their original order and verse were better. Having not read the original "Ariel," I can't compare, but it seems a sensible idea that should have been done earlier. Ted Hughes' editing and arranging of the original is astonishing, especially considering Plath stopped allowing him to see her poems during their separation. However, when one is still married and accidentally takes their own life, as Plath did, things can be complicated. Frieda felt the need to make her mother's work right, and that's a good thing.

After reading about Plath in Al Álvarez's "The Savage God: A Study of Suicide," I became intrigued by this fascinating woman and wanted to learn more about her as a poet. I watched a PBS video of her life story and listened to her actual voice. What interested me most was her need to read aloud her poems at the end of her life. It's true that she was writing some of her best poems during that last year. While "Ariel" may not be a great book of poetry as a whole, it does contain some remarkable poems, such as "Getting There," "Medusa," and "The Rival."

"Getting There" showcases Plath's powerful writing, with vivid imagery and a sense of urgency. "Medusa" is another strong poem, with its disturbing and yet captivating language. And "The Rival" presents a unique perspective on a relationship, with its comparison to the moon. These poems, along with others in the collection, demonstrate Plath's talent and the difficulty she may have had with a tyrannical editor like Gordon Lish. While some of her poems may have been too soft or easy for Lish, I believe he would have liked these three and perhaps offered little or no suggestion for improvement. They are truly that good.

In conclusion, Sylvia Plath was a talented poet whose work continues to be studied and admired. The restored edition of "Ariel" offers a new look at her poems and allows us to better understand her creative process. I'm kind of disappointed.

You see, I was really expecting something more. Maybe a higher score, or a better outcome. But when I saw that 3.5, it just didn't meet my expectations.

I don't know if it's because I set my standards too high, or if there was something that could have been done differently. But either way, I can't help but feel a bit let down.

However, I guess it's not the end of the world. I can still learn from this experience and try to do better next time. Maybe I'll work harder, or pay more attention to the details.

At the end of the day, disappointment is just a part of life. And as long as I keep a positive attitude and keep moving forward, I'm sure things will get better.
