The title itself is a paradox, as we typically think of hell as a place of punishment and torment. But the idea that Vanni Fucci is alive and well there suggests a different kind of hell, one that may be more psychological than physical.

Introduction to 'Vexed to Nightmare by a Rocking Cradle'

This is a remarkable collection that features thirteen of Simmons' early stories.

Accompanying these stories is a wonderful introduction penned by Harlan Ellison.

The collection strikes a nice balance between horror and science fiction. It includes a Hyperion story, which is the original version of what would later evolve into his classic novel Carrion Comfort. Additionally, it contains Metastasis along with the screenplay he wrote for its adaptation.

Simmons later achieved great fame for his novels, to the extent that his short fiction was often overlooked, which is truly a pity. In fact, he is a master of the short story form.

The stories originally saw the light of day in the 1980s, yet they have aged remarkably well. The only minor aspect that dates them is that the characters seem to have forgotten about their phones.

Overall, this is very good stuff that is well worth exploring.

From horror to scifi to crime, this talented guy writes truly great stuff.

Recently, I picked up my first Simmons book, and it was an absolute delight. After reading that initial work, I was so impressed that I promptly went out and bought most of his other books. However, I must admit that I haven't had the chance to read them all just yet.

Among all the stories I've explored so far, Carrion Comfort stands out as my favorite. There's something about the way Simmons weaves the plot, creates the characters, and builds the atmosphere that truly captivates me. It's a story that keeps me on the edge of my seat, filled with unexpected twists and turns.

I can't wait to dive into the rest of Simmons' works and discover more of his amazing storytelling. I have a feeling that each book will be a new adventure, taking me to different worlds and introducing me to unique characters.

Unfortunately, Dan Simmons is one of the few authors whose novels and stories can truly arouse fear and unease in me. There is something in his descriptions of pain and suffering that makes me feel strange and truly touched.

However, Christ, I don't know if I will ever reach for his books again, because these pedophilic tendencies to describe grooming and self-insertions in the role of a man in these stories make me feel bad for completely different reasons.

It's a complex and disturbing situation. On one hand, his writing has the power to evoke strong emotions and make me think deeply. But on the other hand, these aspects that involve inappropriate and uncomfortable themes are hard to ignore.

I find myself in a dilemma, not sure if I can overlook these elements and still appreciate the other qualities of his work. It's a struggle between the artistic merit and the moral concerns that his writing presents.

The third of the stories is excellent, but what is the point of the rest?

This statement seems to imply that while one particular story stands out and is of high quality, the other parts may not hold the same level of significance or value.

It could be that the other stories lack the same depth, creativity, or engaging elements that make the third one so good.

However, it's also possible that the person making this comment is simply more interested in that specific type of story or has different expectations for what makes a good collection.

Maybe further exploration of the other stories could reveal hidden gems or unique perspectives that were initially overlooked.

In any case, it's important to consider the overall context and purpose of the collection when evaluating its individual components.

I recently picked up a collection of short stories by Dan Simmons.

I started reading and managed to get through three of them. However, after that, I decided to skip the next three stories.

And finally, I just couldn't bring myself to finish the whole thing and dnf'd (did not finish) it.

I have this habit of always picking up Dan Simmons' books at the charity shops. Every time I see one, I think, "Oh yeah, that's the guy that wrote The Terror."

But the truth is, I didn't really like The Terror. And as it turns out, I haven't liked any of his books that I've read so far.

Maybe it's time I should probably stop buying his books.

It's a shame really, because I keep hoping that one of his books will finally click with me and I'll understand why so many people seem to love his work.

But for now, it looks like I'll have to look elsewhere for my reading pleasure.

As a note, I did not read 'Remembering Siri' as I am currently rereading Hyperion and it's in that book. Also, I didn't read 'Carrion Comfort' because I plan to read the full novel first sometime in the future.

Other than that, Dan Simmons is an outstanding writer. He has an amazing ability to touch and channel your emotions. Among his works, 'Iverson's Pits' was probably my absolute favourite. The story was engaging and filled with vivid details that really brought the setting and characters to life.

On the other hand, my least favourite was 'Vexed to Nightmare by a Rocking Cradle'. Maybe it was the theme or the way it was presented that didn't quite resonate with me as much as the others. However, this doesn't take away from the fact that Dan Simmons is a highly talented writer, and I look forward to exploring more of his works in the future.

I have always had a penchant for full-length novels over short stories. However, this particular collection by Dan Simmons has completely changed my perspective. It is truly a remarkable piece of work.

Even years after reading it, certain short stories from this collection continue to linger in my mind. They have made a profound impact on me.

The stories are masterfully crafted, with engaging plots, well-developed characters, and beautiful prose. Each one offers a unique and unforgettable experience.

Dan Simmons has a remarkable ability to create vivid and immersive worlds within the confines of a short story. His writing is both captivating and thought-provoking.

This collection is a must-read for anyone who enjoys good literature, regardless of their preference for novels or short stories. It is a testament to the power and beauty of the short story form.

Prayers to Broken Stones marked my initial foray into the short fiction realm of Dan Simmons, and it truly did not disappoint! This eclectic collection maintains a consistent level of quality. Simmons's prose is unwavering, and his Devil-like capacity to completely overtake the reader is on full display.

These stories span the 1980s, a decade when Simmons was just beginning his journey and not yet a household name. Among the included pieces are his first published work, “The River Styx Runs Upstream,” and “The Death of the Centaur,” a story crafted exclusively for this collection.

Most of these tales firmly fall into the horror category, yet a couple have sci-fi leanings. “Remembering Siri” (set in the Hyperion universe, it seems) is full-on science fiction. At first, this made me a bit skeptical, but the beauty of the writing ultimately won me over. The plot, however, was not quite to my taste.

This collection is a fun and nearly perfect read for the Halloween season. If you're seeking a skillful and diverse collection of stories from a master writer, your search ends here.

Great read. Simmons has a more novel-as-short-story approach, which is truly unique. There is a lot of movement and coloration in his works, while others often prefer a scene-based and quick motion narrative.

"The River Styx Flows Upstream", "Vexed to Nightmare by a Rocking Cradle" and "Iverson's Pits" are my absolute favorites. Simmons is probably the greatest storyteller of the last 50 years. I firmly believe he will be remembered as the greatest writer of the century.

I would like to note here though that none of these short stories would be published in today's faux-artistic world of short story publishing. These stories demand patience from the reader and require one to move through scenes as if observing them in real-time, all with a perfect balance of strangeness and a voice that is true to the character. Magazine editors currently, and I'm hoping it's just a fad, are almost exclusively interested in "idea stories" or what I call "What if" stories. There is no longer any room for philosophical subtext, clever description or even a puzzling split metaphor. Everything has to be understood by the common idiot. Everything has to be as plain as day, and to hell with double meanings or even single meanings, as they'll be lost on the modern reader. It's truly sad that writers are almost forbidden to learn from or mimic the great writers. To do so is a direct path to rejection. Instead, there better not be any loopholes in your story about lawnmowers that come alive at night to feed on rascally garden gnomes. Never mind that you can't write worth a shit, and you couldn't spot a plu-perfect verb if it latched on to your only descended testicle.

Oh my, another one of my rants. Oh well.

It was a good book.
