This is a very good collection of short stories.

Each story within it offers a unique and captivating experience.

The real gem, however, is the story set in the Hyperion universe.

The author has managed to create a rich and immersive world that draws the reader in from the very first page.

The details and the atmosphere of the Hyperion universe are so vividly described that it feels as if you are actually there.

Even if you were to purchase this book just for that one story set in the Hyperion universe, it would be well worth the price.

The other stories in the collection are also of high quality, but the Hyperion story truly stands out and makes this book a must-read for any fan of science fiction or short stories in general.

It is a literary masterpiece that will leave you thinking long after you have finished reading it.

Like all short story collections, this one, which consists of Simmons' early work for OMNI and others, is a mixed bag.

Some of the stories may not be as engaging or well-written as others. However, that being said, it's definitely worth the read for three particular pieces: "Remembering Siri", "The Death of the Centaur", and the original novella version of "Carrion Comfort".

These three pieces stand out for their superb conception and writing. Simmons truly shows his best in these works, with richly developed characters, complex themes, and masterful storytelling.

The details and emotions in these stories draw the reader in and keep them engaged from beginning to end. Whether you're a fan of science fiction, fantasy, or just good storytelling in general, these three pieces are sure to satisfy.

I truly relished Metastasis, Carrion Comfort, Vanni Fucci, and Shave and a Haircut. These works each possess their own unique charm and allure.

Metastasis takes the reader on a thrilling journey filled with unexpected twists and turns. Carrion Comfort delves deep into the human psyche, exploring themes of pain, suffering, and resilience. Vanni Fucci presents a complex and captivating character study. And Shave and a Haircut offers a lighthearted yet engaging tale.

In addition, the short story version of the Hollow Man was also quite good. It managed to capture the essence of the original work while presenting it in a concise and engaging format.

Overall, I found these works to be a delightful and enriching read, and I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for some great literature to enjoy.

This epic story that unfolds over a school year involves several characters - a neo-cat, a sorcerer, and a centaur named Raul - who attempt to reach a portal between worlds. They are pursued by a crowd of mages seeking to get their hands on an artifact. The tale combines SF and fantasy, and attracts children with its battles, acts of heroism, generosity, sense of responsibility, sacrifices, and grandeur. It is clear that Raul, the centaur - similar to Raul Endymion - will have a crucial impact on these adventures.

The method used by Dan Simmons allows us to discover a profound America, approximately in the 70s, so different from our European fantasies. Moreover, the portrait of this bucolic community strongly reminds me of the population described by King in Salem, even if the format chosen here does not offer the same depth and analysis. The text of Dan Simmons is likeable and does not really revolutionize the genre, but the interest is not there. It is mainly a first draft of Hyperion and the stories shared by the pilgrims, especially that of the Consul (Siri). Moreover, we find many elements in it.
