As a self-identified poststructuralist, I firmly believe that central idealized renderings of people are incomplete versions of the totality of a person. A person is never one thing. A person is all the varied people via exchanges, situations, relationships, circumstances, phases, roles, and movements in a spatial sense. So many factors dictate what a person is and Jesus was no different. With this book, Gibran reminds me that we're all an amalgamation of perspectives. By composing the book with the various stories of people impacted by Jesus in one way or another, Gibran creates the full-throated, warm-blooded, emotionally complex rendering of the human being, Jesus Christ. Examples of this complexity include portraying Jesus in a smoldering romantic light, as an egalitarian, as a man of danger, in the light of a grandson, as a god bent into the form of a son, and so many other roles that crystalize him as a full-bodied individual.

These various roles paint a picture of a man who left a scar on his community and their world. By giving voice to so many who crossed Jesus’ path, Gibran recreates a community rife with the emotional complexity a man of this gravity would have stirred. Gibran is successful in gifting the reader with everybody's Jesus and nobody's Jesus.

Much of the complexity of the book arises from the conflicting and nuanced reputation Jesus accrues via the various storytellers. Gibran’s wisdom lies in the fact that he recognizes one can only tell so much about a person from the mouths of their admirers. One gains much more knowledge about a person by the ways they have come to be despised and the enemies they keep. Given the fact that Jesus’ life ends as a martyr, there is not only glory and passion heaped upon him but also disdain and diatribe. For a true account of the entirety of a human being, no person is loved by all. From this perspective, interesting are those who castigate Jesus and the perspectives Gibran gives voice to create this variance in the reception or creation of Jesus. Case in point, a young priest from Capernaum portrays Jesus as a spider casting his web intending to ensnare women. It is also said that he is one who traps ignorant power-hungry men. In another case, a woman speaks of her unwillingness to ever forgive Jesus for taking her only son away because he became obsessed, absorbed, and magnetized by Jesus’ word. There are those like Judas who view Jesus as a pacifist and thusly a traitor to his people as he does not seek to emancipate them from the Romans. Some view Jesus as a waste of talent and others as unoriginal.

In this work, Gibran himself oddly plays the role of Jesus while Jesus plays the role of Lazarus. In this regard, Gibran insufflates the lifeless and rotting corpse that Jesus, the man, has been reduced to by modern Christianity. Gibran reanimates the eviscerated corpus of Jesus by imbuing the mass with all of the mystical and incarnate gestures, tonalities, conversations, emotional outbursts, laughs, and touches that would have composed the supremely human Jesus. In this way, Gibran holds up a candle to the mysterious corner of Jesus' life left out by today’s modern gospels. As I have come to expect from Gibran's style, his beautifully crafted poetic language massages the forgotten and deadened regions of the heart. The warmth of his hand burrows deep into the critical organs of the soul establishing a profound intimacy with the reader and the subject matter.

One thing this book does not purport to do is give the interiority of Jesus. It never gives us an inner monologue or access to Jesus’s psychology in that way. The book is not lacking in light of this, although someone seeking this will not find it here. As someone who does not identify as a Christian, this book reinstated my adoration for Jesus.

Although this book is predominantly about Jesus, many sections feature vignettes about the disciples and apostles. Because of this, the book caused me to want to reread the New Testament to see if I would gather the same conclusions or views about Apostle Paul that Gibran holds. Interestingly enough, Judas is not painted in such a negative light.

Overall, I viewed this as a wonderfully crafted, interesting, deeply reflective work that speaks to one of the most interesting characters and belief systems in the world today.

Sedang Khalil Gibran adalah si jenius yang menggugah ku buat menulis...Tapi sih kalo yang ini aku emang belum membacanya.!!! hehe..nanti deh aku membeli terus membacanya ya.? ^_____^

I absolutely loved this book... such an interesting and thoughtful take on Jesus and the times of Jesus. Also gave humanity to stories often looked over or put in a harsh light, this book was refreshing and a good read. I have often picked it up to read a chapter or two again.

کتابی روایت گونه از اشخاص مختلف و نظرات و عقایدشان راجع به حضرت عیسی مسیح که آقای جبران در نهایت نظر خود را با قلمی بسیار دلچسب عنوان می کنند.
نقدی که می توان بر این اتر داشت این است که از لحاظ تاریخی مدرک موتقی به شمار نمیرود چراکه به عنوان متال حتی محل تولد حضرت عیسی را ناصره معرفی می کند ولی اگر بخواهم دلیلی برای این تغییر مکان تولد بیاورم می گویم شاید آقای جبران خواسته اند عقاید خود را در قالب عیسی ای تازه به جهانیان اعلام کنند امادر مورد تک تک جزییات به کار رفته در این کتاب باید بگویم با شک برخورد کردم به همان دلیل شک به اعتبار وقایع تاریخی و افراد.
برخی از این شک ها را با استناد به قرآن کریم بر طرف کردم همانند به صلیب کشیده نشدن حضرت عیسی و غیره.
از این موارد که بگذریم قلم آقای نویسنده به خصوص در صفحات بایانی نظرم را جلب کرد.

*يصف عيسي عليه السلام الآثمين قائلا :

الضعفاء قوم قد ضلوا طريقهم فى المتاهات ,على حين لم يضل المنافقون طريقهم
فهم يعرفون أين يسيرون ,لكنهم على هذا عابثون هازلون على الرمال وفى مهب الريح وإنى لهذا لاألقاهم ولا أفسح لهم رحابى ..

وتابع قائلا:
*طوبى لهؤلاء الذين صفت أرواحهم وطوبى للذين لايبيتون أسرى مايملكون
لأنهم سوف يضحون أحرارا.
وطوبى لمن يذكرون أتراحهم ,وفى أتراحهم يرقبون أفراحهم ..
وطوبى للذين يتضورون جوعا ينشدون الحق والجمال ,فسيكون لهم من جوعهم الخبز الذى يأكلون ,ومن ظمئهم الماء القراح الذى يشربون ..
وطوبى لذوى الكرم والحلم ,لهم من كرمهم وحلمهم خير عزاء وسلوى
وطوبى للذين قد طهرت قلوبهم ,لأنهم لن يكونوا بعيدا من الله ..
وطوبى للرحماء لأن الرحمة ستكون جزاءهم..

*عندما تريد الصلاة دع شوقك يمل عليك كلماتك وإن شوقى الآن ليملى علي أن أضرع قائلا:
رب العالمين رب السماوات والأرضين
تقدست أسماؤك ,لتكن مشيئتك فينا كما كانت دائما
وارزقنا من خبزك كفاء يومنا
واغفر لنا برحمتك , وامنحنا القدرة على أن يعفو بعضنا عن بعض
واهدنا صراطك,وامدد لنا يدك فى الظلمات
لك الملك ,وبك القوة,وبك بلوغ القصد..

*إن الطير فى السماء والقمم التى تتوج الجبال لاتلقى بالا
للأفاعى فى حجورها المظلمة ..
دع الموتى يدفنون موتاهم وكن أنت بين الأحياء وحلق عاليا ..

ثم يتحدث بنيامين الكاتب عن عيسي قائلا:
كان عيسي إيذانا بمملكة جديدة على وجه الأرض
مملكة لن تبيد,كان ابنا وكان حفيدا لكل من شيد مملكة الروح من ملوك ..
وما حكم دنيانا غير هؤلاء من ملوك الروح
لقد كان عيسي مدركا لربه فى كل آية من آيات اليوم,كان يراه فى الغمام وفى ظل الغمام السابح فوق الأرض ..

ويرجع عيسي لتأملاته يقول :
*لقد أحصى الله الطير فى السماء وعدها كما عدَ شعرات رؤوسكم
مامن طير يسقط عند اقدام الرامى , وما من شعرة فى رؤوسكم
تستحيل شهباء أو تسقط فى مدارج العمر إلا بإرادته..

*يواصل عيسي االحديث موجها كلامه لأتباعه:
لقد آستمعت إليكم فى جلجات قلوبكم تقولون: سيكون ربنا -نحن أبناء إبراهيم-أبر بنا منه بأولئك الذين لم يعرفوه منذ البدء..
ولكنى أقول لكم: إن رب الكرمة الذى يدعو أجيرا مع الصباح للحصد
ثم يدعوا غيره مع مغيب الشمس ويجزى الأخير أجر الأول ,هو فى الحق من العادلين..ألم يعط من كيسه هو وبإرادته؟؟!!

*قد يسعى المخطئون إلى دوركم ..فلتحرصوا على أن تفتحوا لهم الأبواب
وأن تأذنوا لهم بالجلوس إلى موائدكم ..
فإن لم تلقوهم فلن تكونوا أبدا أبرياء مما قد آقترفوا

ويتابع جبران فى هذا السياق : القلب الطاهر وحده هو الذى يصبر
على الظمأ الذى يقود غيره إلى راكد الماء, وأن ذا القدم المطمئنة
وحده يمد يداً لمن يتعثر ..

*وعن الجار يقول عيسي :
جارك نفس لك أخرى تسكن خلف الجدار ,وحين تتعارف النفوس تنهار
هذه الجدران الفاصلة جميعاً..
وما تدرى لعل جارك نفسك الخيرة تحل فى بدن آخر
فليكن حبك له من حبك لنفسك ..
إنه هو الآخر صورة من العلى القدير الذى لاتدركه ..

* جارك حقل يخطر فيه ربيع آمالك فى حُللٍه الخضراء
ويهجع فيه شتاء عوزك حالماَ بالمرتفعات تكسو الثلوج قممها
جارك مرآة فيها ترى محياك وقد كسته جمالاَ
..
فرحة لم تعرفها أنت نفسك , وأسىً لم تشارك فيه

وأخيراً .. قد فضلت أن أستعرض بعض أجزاء الكتاب خيرا من التحدث عنه
إذ كيف لمثلى وصف ذلك من البلاغة والبيان والشعور ..

ولا أخفيكم سراً أنى قصدت التتعتع فى قراءة هذا الكتاب لشدة حلاوته ولأثره على نفسي من الطمأنينة والسكينة وسلام النفس ..

One of the greatest books ever written.

Great book. This is a 'what if' book. It is a collection of commentaries of characters in the Bible who may have known Jesus, and how they viewed him. It is a very human book, and of course fictional. But a very good read to contemplate how Christ's contemporaries may have viewed Him.

It is all too easy for people to mistake Khalil Gibran for a non-Christian; British book-stores place his books in the Islam section. He appears to have been a Maronite Orthodox Christian.



And that gives him excellent insight into the life of Christ, from the perspectives of his contemporaries, friend and foe, because of the preserved tradition of that old church. The figure in this book matches the Gospel figure to a greater extent than the Jesus-loves-you-just-as-you-are images that we hear too much of today.



There is a grave temptation to look at the Christ-figure and see what you WANT to see, to see yourself. Then, when you go to the Gospel, you find an awe-inspiring figure who does loves the individual, but probably not just the way he or she is. Because his message, always, was 'Repent'. Mr. Gibran uses similar language to Biblical and early Christian writings, portraying the God-man as the Apostles may quite plausibly have seen him.



Here is something memorable in the book from Christ to Mary Magdalene, whom Mr. Gibran describes as a reformed prostitute:

'I love you in yourself. Other men see a beauty in you that shall fade away sooner than their own years...all men love you for themselves. I love you for yourself.'
