Once again I am amazed by Calvino's writing prowess. By far this is my favourite work of his. Comprised of 13 stories exploring love as a sublime and indescribable force, Difficult Loves takes the reader on a journey through the human experience of love and delves into its sensitive intricacies.

From its title, love is obviously the central theme of this collection, but the already beautiful concept is made even more transcendental by the 13 different lenses into it offered by the author. Whether it is the fleeting encounter of a boy and girl on a ski trip or the daily routine of a married couple, Calvino displays love in all of its glory - a glory that is only born through both its difficulties and joys, in being able to experience but unable to express its ineffability.

While all the tales are implicitly connected to the titular concept, the final story of the Motorist is the ultimate thematic tie. Perhaps this significance is underlined with the first-person narration of the story, compared to the third-person narration of every other tale. As the Motorist muses on his relationship with Y and Z, the remarks gradually adopt an editorialising tone, enlightening us to the basic principles underpinning every "adventure" in Difficult Loves. With such a narrative to close out the entire collection, Calvino successfully devises a powerful conclusion befitting this enchanting anthology, leaving the reader to meditate on and savour its profundity.

As a writer, Calvino's worlds full of magic are his trademark. However, Difficult Loves is not so magical as works like  Invisible Cities; rather, its defining trait is a solid grounding in events of real life, though with a touch of Calvino-brand magic in the phenomenal narrations of love. The stories of Difficult Loves are not long pieces, yet all are inlaid with panging feelings and shocking relatability. Each of these tales is deeply human, down to the bare bones, and it is the inescapable flaws of humanity that make the stories all the more lovable. As we follow the characters in their "adventures", the anxiety and confusion they experience - coupled with excitement and affection - become mirrors for us to reflect on our own lives. With the range of characters spanning across all stages and walks of life, invariably we can find traces of ourselves within these protagonists. Calvino bestows an endearing mundanity on all of his characters, reaffirming their statures as figures of the commonfolk and establishes a firm link between tales of fiction and the roots of reality.

Of course, the price to pay is high, but we have to accept it: not to be able to distinguish ourselves from the many signals that pass along this road, each with a meaning of its own that remains hidden and indecipherable, because there is no longer anyone outside of here who is able to receive us and understand us.

For an idea as complex and tender as love itself, this book does an incredible job at examining all of its nuanced facets. There is almost nothing I dislike about the work.

I only wish that it was a little longer, with a few more stories of those difficult loves, full of inexplicable emotions tangled up in jumbled expressions that make them all the more precious.

Coleção de contos impressionante, o autor mostra uma enorme maestria ao descrever cenas evocativas e construir personagens complexos. É a primeira vez que leio Italo Calvino e este título não decepcionou em nenhum instante. Os dois contos finais - considerados por muitos como novelas por conta do tamanho-, são os menos interessantes (só por isso não leva 5 estrelas). Recomendo!

"Aventura de un miope", "Aventura de una bañista", "Aventura de un lector" eta "La hormiga argentina" izan dire nire gogokoenak. Baina denek dute deskolokatzen zaituen zerbait. Orain errudun sentitzen naiz beste ipuin batzuk baztertzeagatik.
Estiloa bereziki bereizgarria ez izan arren (nire iritziz), aipatzekoak dira noizbehinka erabiltzen dituen errepikapenez jositako esaldi luzeak. Ozen irakurri behar diren horiek.

Intimismo deseroso baten baitan mugitzen diren pertsonaiak darabiltza Calvinok, maiz ez jakin arren pertsonaiak deserosotasun horren sortzaile edo biktima diren, edo akaso biak.

"Yo terminaba por participar en su alegría, pero entonces el patio, el polvo, me entristecían más porque había caído en la tentación de pensar que la vida podía ser diferente ." Bezelako esaldiak utzi dizkigu liburuak.

Giving this 4 stars because sometimes I think of these scenes again, and because when people ask me what I think about it I usually gush. Which means that, in truth, I like it quite a bit. And I do. This is a lovely bit of writing overall.

3.5 / A beautiful collection of short vignettes and perspectives from life. Deftly illustrated by Calvino with charm, patience, and attention to detail. Some were better than others, but I love especially the Riviera stories and the Stories of Love and Loneliness.

Il letto era come l'aveva lasciato Elide alzandosi, ma dalla parte sua, di Arturo, era quasi intatto, come fosse stato rifatto allora. Lui si coricava dalla propria parte, per bene, ma dopo allungava una gamba in là, dov'era rimasto il calore di sua moglie, poi ci allungava anche l'altra gamba, e così a poco a poco si spostava tutto dalla parte di Elide, in quella nicchia di tepore che conservava ancora la forma del corpo di lei, e affondava il viso nel suo guanciale, nel suo profumo, e s'addormentava.

Raccolta di corte vicende che sono sufficienti a loro stesse nella loro dolcezza ed essenzialità, una lettura decisamente piacevole!

"L'amavo, insomma. Ed ero infelice. Ma come lei avrebbe mai potuto capire questa mia infelicità? Ci sono quelli che si condannano al grigiore della vita più mediocre perché hanno avuto un dolore, una sfortuna; ma ci sono anche quelli che lo fanno perché hanno avuto più fortuna di quella che si sentivano di reggere"

La raccolta contiene le storie di "Vita difficile" tratte da "I racconti" di Calvino, con l'aggiunta di alcune non presenti originariamente. Sono stati inseriti anche due dei tre testi provenienti dalla parte "Vita difficile", sempre de "I racconti".

Al risveglio da un'inaspettata notte di passione trovai questo libro tra i pochi della mia ospite. Spiccava tra le edizioni francesi di scrittori nipponici in voga di questi tempi. Rimasi a letto, alternando sonno, sogni e racconti fino all'ora di pranzo, mentre lei lavorava alla scrivania accanto. Mantenni quest'abitudine anche ai successivi incontri, arrivando a preferire la lettura, inframezzata da qualche carezza, alla conversazione. Curiosamente questo idillio si concluse raggiunta proprio la fine della prima parte. Per leggere i due racconti finali ho dovuto quindi prendere in prestito il libro in biblioteca, una copia sgualcita, con scotch per mantenere attaccata la copertina, ricco di segni e sottolineature, così distante dall'edizione immacolata che leggevo in camera sua.

Ciò detto, ho di gran lunga preferito l'atmosfera legata alla condizione in cui ho letto il libro piuttosto che il libro stesso.

Un Calvino immaturo, un po' romantico, un po' sociale. Molte descrizioni, pochi contenuti. Sono arrivato ad annoiarmi, in particolare durante le storie di "Vita difficile", eccessivamente lunghe. Mi hanno stimolato soltanto i racconti "Avventura di un fotografo" ed il validissimo "Avventura di un automobilista", che ho riletto con piacere, avendolo già apprezzato sotto altro titolo in "Ti con zero". Curiosa la scelta di aggiungere questo racconto alla raccolta, è palese la sua appartenenza ad un altro periodo della parabola creativa dell'autore, è stato per giunta scritto dieci anni dopo tutti gli altri.

In definitiva non un granché, poi per carità Calvino ha sempre saputo scrivere, semplicemente qui mi pare avesse poco da raccontare. Consigliato giusto a chi si emoziona con poco, a condizione che sia scritto decentemente. Per tutti gli altri leggete invece "Le cosmicomiche".

This collection of stories about how we try (and fail) to bridge the distance between ourselves and other people is beautiful and sad and funny. My favorites were The Adventure of a Soldier, The Adventure of a Motorist and The Argentine Ant.
