Prosa yang asyik dan indah. Terkandung 3 novela; Belahan Mendua, Bertakhta di Pohon dan Kesatria yang Tidak Wujud yang dihimpun sebagai Warisan Kami. Paling saya suka adalah Bertakhta di Pohon (versi terjemahan 350+ ms) mengenai Baron Cosimo yang naik radang pada suatu hari atas faktor2 sekeliling lalu memutuskan dengan tekad tertinggi untuk tinggal di atas pokok sepanjang hayatnya. Belahan Mendua pula tentang Viscount Medardo yang terbelah dua dek meriam askar Turki. Manakala Kesatria Agilulf pula tidak wujud tapi punya matlamat yang penghujungnya kabur.

Sememangnya cerita yang indah dan dijalin dengan baik oleh Italo Calvino.

Tri Kalvinova dela spojena od strane njega samog u jednu tematsku trilogiju o našim precima: čoveku dobra i zla, tvrdoglavom idealisti i vitezu koji je sam sebe ubedio da postoji.

Prepolovljeni knez/vikont (4+) je novela, a po duhu odužena pripovetka, o jednom, gle čuda, knezu, koji biva, gle čuda, prepolovljen u ratu, i to u luni-tuns šmeku gde top ne napravi rupu samo u stomaku, već odnese čitavu jednu stranu tela. I tako, vraća se naš knez koji spreda izgleda kao iz profila u rodno mu selo, sa blagim poremećajem ličnosti. Čak i da ne piše na naslovnoj, znao bih da je pisac Kalvino. Pripovetka koja je, iako možda ne toliko suptilna u svojoj alegoriji, u svakoj meri posebna i zabavna i smešna i dirljiva, sa neverovatno simpatično izgradjenim likovima u tek nešto preko devedeset strana. Uvek se uplašim da ću da se naviknem na slike koje Kalvino pruža. Raduje me što se to još nije dogodilo. A kakve slike pruža...

Kada je reč o Baronu na drvetu (4+), ostaviću prikaz na citatu, odnosno razgovoru Kozima, naslovnog barona, i jednog vojnika u prolazu:
„You see... War... For years now I’ve been dealing as best I can with a thing that in itself is appaling; war... and all this for ideals which I shall never, perhaps, be able to explain fully to myself...“
„I too,“ replied Cosimo, „have lived many years for ideals which I would never be able to explain to myself; but I do something entirely good; I live on trees.“
Čudno je reći za Kalvinov roman da je „običan“ ili (relativno; ipak je osnova narative o klicnu koji odbije da večera i ode da živi u krošnjama do kraja života) normalan, ali ovaj to jeste, bez obzira na ekcentričnost priče – ali je i lep, nežan, miran, i iako na kraju malo otaljan, celovit.

Nepostojeći Vitez (5) ja baš ono što mi je trebalo od Kalvina – zabavan, mojtipantonovski viteški roman/novela. I toliko mi je žao što nije duži, ali i ovako je izrazito simpatičan i drag.

Za mene, Kalvino ne zna za poraz – ovo je još jedna prilično ubedljiva knjiga, ali nažalost i još jedna manje njegove bibliografije koja mi ostaje. Mislim da ću sad malo da postim, čisto kako bi mi život na duže staze bio lepši.

4+ (samo zbog genijalnosti Putnika i Gradova)

"Öykücüyle savaşçıyı aynı kişi yaptım - aklıma son anda gelen bir sürpriz bu, sanırım size söylediğimin dışında hiçbir özel anlam taşımıyor. Ama siz ille de, ne bileyim, içselleştirici zekayla dışa dönük canlılığın bir bütün olması gerektiği anlamına falan geldiğini düşünmeyi yeğliyorsanız, o sizin bileceğiniz iş."

Kitabına dair bunu diyen bir yazarın eseri nasıl yorumlanabilir? En korktuğum şeydir bir esere özünden fazla anlam yüklemek, yazarın hiç niyet etmediği şeyleri tuhaf yapısökümlerle esere atfetmek, edebiyatı teknik bir meseleye indirgemek. Ancak Calvino'nun biraz fazla tevazu gösterdiğini söylemek lazım, zira bu 3 acayip "masal", "öyle aklıma geldiği gibi yazdım"la açıklanamayacak denli müthiş.

Biraz değiştirilmiş halleriyle ve onlara eşlik eden çizimlerle hem ayrı ayrı birer kitap olarak, hem de Calvino'nun tercihiyle "Atalarımız" başlığı altında beraberce de basılan üç novella; İkiye Bölünen Vikont, Ağaca Tüneyen Baron ve Varolmayan Şövalye'yi yazarken Calvino'nun bir derdi varmış elbette. Soğuk savaş döneminde, politik olarak gergin bir dönemde, kendini ifade etmekte güçlük çekerken; "direniş edebiyatı"nın unsurlarını geçmiş bir zamanda, olmayan diyarlarda geçen öykülerde kullanmayı denemiş, kendini bu biçimde daha özgür hissetmiş. İlk bakışta uçuk kaçık masallar gibi gözüken bu öyküler, aslında ilk bakışta göründüklerinden çok daha politik metinler.

Ama zaten göründükleri yalın halleriyle de ziyadesiyle güzeller. Uzak bir gelecekte uzayda geçen Kozmokomik Öyküler'in tam karşıtı bir evrende vuku buluyorlar ve fakat aynı hissi ve lezzeti sunuyorlar okura. Her Calvino bitirdiğimde aklımda yeşeren soru yine beliriverdi yani: "bu nasıl bir deha ya?"

Calvino'nun dünyalarında gezinmeye bayılıyorum. Birbirine çok benzeyen ve hiç benzemeyen evrenlerindeki o tuhaf, absürt, uçuk hikayelerini dinlemenin lezzeti sahiden eşsiz.

İçlerinden en çok Varolmayan Şövalye'yi sevdim ama ayırmak zor sahiden. Bu arada İkiye Bölünen Vikont'ta kısaca da olsa Calvino'nun hayali kentlerinden biri olan Zaira'dan bahis açması, benim o hiç var olmamış şehri Görünmez Kentler'den hatırlayıp "ah" demem de bu kitaba dair nefis bir hatıra olarak kaldı bana. ❤️

My favourite out of the three stories was "The Baron in the Trees" – I found "The Cloven Viscount" and "The Non-Existent Knight" rather dull, hard slogs to get through despite being reasonably short. The longest of the three stories, "The Baron in the Trees", was by far the most engaging and beautifully written of the three to me. However, although I found it captivating through Cosimo’s childhood and adolescence, as it progressed through to his adulthood I found it less interesting as it became more obviously political and allegorical. Overall, these were not my favourite style of story to read, but still worth reading and with some beautiful passages and imaginative ideas.

I finally finished this book and its not because I didn't like it, I just kept having lapses in my reading habits and so it took a while to get through. Our Ancestors is basically an omnibus of three of Italo Calvino's early short pieces- The Cloven Viscount, which is a novella, The Baron in the Trees, which is a fairly short novel and finally, The Non-Existent Knight, another novella. I'll write a little about each piece as they are all pretty different and can't be summed up together effectively...

The Cloven Viscount- This first novella of the volume is about a nobleman returning from battle to his small village in Italy, who has been bisected down the middle by a cannonball. He is a wealthy and powerful figure of the area but soon begins to act strangely and the locals become unsure whether they are glad to have him back at all. I enjoyed this first novella and found it to be a really novel idea which throws up a few surprises as it reaches its conclusion. It does have a bit of a bloodthirsty nature in places, but in an old German fairy-tale type way and it is a well done little fable, which never lagged at all and kept me interested throughout.

The Baron in the Trees- This second piece is a proper short novel and is the main event in the volume. Baron Cosimo, at the age of twelve, decides he's had enough of being a ground dweller and flees to the tree tops to live a life among the birds, squirrels and leafy boughs. He still communes with those below, but is intent on never again setting foot on the earth beneath him, as he grows accustomed to his new, unconventional way of life. I really liked this one and thought it was the best book in the volume and enjoyed the way Calvino portrayed a life spent in the tree tops- a delinquent Baron discarding his responsibilities and eschewing all expectations of him in favour of living life his own way. Its also a nice, slow, meditative piece that doesn't rush in telling its tale and gradually unfolds in a very pleasing manner.

The Non-Existent Knight- This brief novella which finishes off Our Ancestors, I probably found the least impressive of the three works but I certainly still enjoyed it. A non-existent knight named Agilulf, who resides in a suit of armour and fights for the army of Charlemagne in France, meets a young prospective soldier and a weird and quite random adventure unfurls. It rushes along a bit and jumps from one scene quickly to the next but it was slightly amusing in places and quite a fun way to conclude the volume, as long as you like a bit of surreal farce in your fantasy/fairy tales...

I overall really enjoyed Our Ancestors and found each separate book to have very much its own identity and its own feel and it was a high quality chunk of escapism. I think anyone who likes magical realism/fantasy/fairy-tales, all written in an elegant literary-fiction type style, all quite slow paced but never boring, will really relish reading Our Ancestors as it is quite charming and different and not like anything I've read before.

Trilogia che contiene tre brevi romanzi scritti e pubblicati tra il 1951 e il 1959, I nostri antenati raccoglie storie caratterizzate da toni fantastici e surreali, accomunate dal tema della formazione, della realizzazione di se stessi e delle proprie aspirazioni.
Le amare e divertenti avventure del visconte Medardo di Terralba, del barone Cosimo Piovasco di Rondò e del cavaliere Agilulfo Emo Bertrandino dei Guildiverni sono ambientate tra il Medioevo e il Settecento, evocando atmosfere fuori dal tempo, echi di poemi cavallereschi e situazioni da novella boccaccesca; la moltitudine di personaggi – realistici, inverosimili, e storici – dà vita ai tipi e alle maschere dell’immutabile umana commedia, rappresentando al tempo stesso l’inossidabile matrice del moderno “uomo artificiale”.
Nella Nota 1960, posta in appendice, l’autore spiega le motivazioni, gli avvenimenti dell’epoca e i temi che diedero origine ai romanzi, raccontando inoltre aneddoti sulla loro realizzazione, il significato e la funzione dei vari personaggi.

“… era un ricamo fatto sul nulla che assomiglia a questo filo d’inchiostro, come l’ho lasciato correre per pagine e pagine, zeppo di cancellature, di rimandi, di sgorbi nervosi, di macchie, di lacune, che a momenti si sgrana in grossi acini chiari, a momenti si infittisce in segni minuscoli come semi puntiformi, ora si ritorce su se stesso, ora si biforca, ora collega grumi di frasi con contorni di foglie o di nuvole, e poi s’intoppa, e poi ripiglia a attorcigliarsi, e corre e corre e si sdipana e avvolge un ultimo grappolo insensato di parole idee sogni ed è finito.” …

Italo Calvino uzun zamandır okumak istediğim bir yazar. Edebiyatına başlamak için önerilen kitap Atalarımız. İki uzun öykü bir de romandan oluşan bir üçleme. Her biri tekil olarak okunsa da art arda okunması daha isabetli olur. Calvino da sonsözünde bir araya getirme amacını açıklıyor.

İkiye Bölünen Vikont favorim oldu. Savaşta aldığı yaralarla bedeninin yarısıyla gelen kontu anlatıyor. Döndüğünde herkese hayatı dar ediyor. Çünkü gelen yarı kontun kötü yanıdır. İnsanın içindeki iyiliği ve kötülüğü, insan olmanın yüklediği ahlakı masalsı bir şekilde anlatıyor.

Ağaca Tüneyen Baron kitaptaki en uzun kısım. Baronun ailesine kızarak -öyle sudan bir sebep ki- toprağa basmama inadını anlatıyor. Artık ağaçlarda yaşamaya başlıyor. Harika bir inat ve her koşulda insanlığın onurunu taşıma öyküsü. Komik durumdaki baron ağacın üzerinde ava da çıkar, eşkıyalarla da karşılaşır hatta aşık bile olur.

Varolmayan Şövalye ise bedensel olarak olmayan bir şövalye ile bedeni olduğu halde bilinci olmayan adamın çatışmasını anlatıyor. İki öykünün yanında biraz sönük kalsa da zihin beden ikilemini problematik haline getirmiş olması bile öyküyü okumak için yeterli.

Büyülü gerçekçiliği çok seviyorum. Daha önce hiçbir stilin olmadığı ölçüde simgesel anlatıma uygun bir stil. Avrupa romanında önemini kaybeden insanmerkezciliği romana yeniden kazandırıyor. Calvino da bunu harikulade bir şekilde uygulamış. Soyut olmayan hiçbir şey yok. Savaşlar, inançlar, aşklar ve türlü garipliklerin hepsi gerçek. Bu büyülü dünya ile insanın soyağacını çıkarmak çok iyi bir fikir. Kitap yapılan tüm övgüleri hak ediyor.

Calvino ile tanışıp sevmek için iyi başlangıç, şövalye baron vikont,
