This book is brilliant. I can't give it 5* because I felt deceived by the title - the longest essay in this book is actually about politics in the UK at the time of WW2 and Orwell's hopes and arguments for a socialist revolution (not as scary as it sounds). Nevertheless I found that essay very interesting, mainly because a lot of the observations Orwell made back then about the British people and politics could also be made today, therefore crystallising in my mind why some things are the way they are. The final essay on political writing and the English language is invaluable, and I've been trying my best in this little review not to commit any of the writing blunders he exposed in it (I probably have)! It basically taught me to stop faffing around with meaningless language and to aim to write, with precision, exactly what I mean.

এ গ্রন্থের একটা প্রবন্ধ "Politics and the English Language" -এ লেখক আলোচনা করেছেন রাজনৈতিক প্রবন্ধের ভাষার অবনতি নিয়ে। লেখকেরা অপ্রচলিত বা কম প্রচলিত শব্দ, সুস্পষ্ট অর্থ প্রকাশ পায় না এমন শব্দ, ভাব নেওয়ার জন্য দুর্বোধ্য শব্দ ব্যবহার করে রাজনৈতিক লেখালেখির মূল উদ্দেশ্য থেকে বিচ্যুত হচ্ছেন। শুধু শব্দ না, বাক্যও দুর্বোধ্য করছেন। রাজনীতির ভাষাকে অস্পষ্ট করে আমজনতাকে ভুলভাল বুঝ দিতে ভূমিকা রাখছেন।
অরওয়েল শব্দের লিস্ট দিয়ে দিয়েছেন কোন কোন শব্দগুলো অর্থহীন, কোন শব্দগুলো ব্যাকডেটেড হয়ে গেছে, সহজ ইংরেজি শব্দ থাকা সত্ত্বেও কোন লাতিন বা ফ্রেঞ্চ ফ্রেজগুলো লেখা হচ্ছে। যদিও লেখক ইংরেজি ভাষার অবনমন নিয়ে লিখেছেন, তারপরও পৃথিবীর সব ভাষার রাজনৈতিক লেখালেখির ক্ষেত্রেই এসব কথা প্রযোজ্য। ভাষাতে দ্ব্যর্থকতা যোগ করে পাঠকদের ধোঁকা দেওয়া তাদের কাছে একটা আর্ট।
১৯৪৬ সালের এই লেখাটা জনসমাবেশে রাজনৈতিক নেতাদের বক্তব্যের জন্যও প্রাসঙ্গিক।
প্রবন্ধ থেকে উদ্ধৃত:
"Political language... is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind."

একইসাথে রচনার অস্পষ্টতা এড়াতে কিছু পরামর্শ দিয়েছেন লেখক, যেমন অপ্রয়োজনে একটা শব্দও না লেখা, অ্যাকটিভ ভয়েস ব্যবহার করা, জারগন বা বিদেশি ফ্রেজ ব্যবহার না করে সবচেয়ে পরিচিত শব্দটা ব্যবহার করা।

"Why I write" (1946) প্রবন্ধ প্রসঙ্গে:

অরওয়েল বলছেন, একজন লেখক প্রধানত চারটি কারণে লেখালেখি করেন।
১. খ্যাতির জন্য, সবাইকে দেখিয়ে দেওয়ার জন্য।

"কেন লিখি" প্রবন্ধে মানিক বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় বলেছেন, তিনি জীবনে যা জেনেছেন সেটা পাঠককে উপলব্ধি করান।
"আমার লেখাকে আশ্রয় করে সে কতকগুলি মানসিক অভিজ্ঞতা লাভ করে– আমি লিখে পাইয়ে না দিলে বেচারি যা কোনোদিন পেত না।"

২. ভালোবেসে লেখেন, ভাষার সৌন্দর্যের প্রতি টান অনুভব করেন।

Dead poets society (1989) মুভি থেকে একটা কোটেশন দেওয়া যায়:

"We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for."

৩. ভবিষ্যতের জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় জ্ঞান রেখে যাওয়ার দায়বদ্ধতা থেকে লেখেন।

৪. রাজনৈতিক উদ্দেশ্য হাসিলের জন্য লেখেন। ব্যাপারটা ইতিবাচক এবং নেতিবাচক, দুই রকমই হতে পারে।

অরওয়েল প্রধানত রাজনৈতিক কারণেই লিখতেন। প্রবন্ধ থেকে উদ্ধৃতি:
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic Socialism, as I understand it."

যারা রাজনৈতিক কারণে লেখালেখি করেন, তাদেরকে নির্দেশনা দেওয়ার মত, ও অনুপ্রাণিত করার মত কিছু কথা এই প্রবন্ধে আছে।

প্রবন্ধের শেষদিকে একটা সুসংবাদ দিয়েছেন অরওয়েল। তাঁর মুখ থেকেই শুনুন:
"I have not written a novel for seven years, but I hope to write another fairly soon. It is bound to be a failure, every book is a failure, but I know with some clarity what kind of book I want to write."

মাথার মধ্যে নতুন উপন্যাসের প্লট সাজিয়ে ফেলেছেন অরওয়েল। কি মনে হয়? বইটা কতটুকু ব্যর্থ হবে?

' أكثر ما رغبتُ به طوال السنوات العشر الماضية هو أن أجعل من الكتابة السياسية فناً . ونقطة انطلاقي هي دائماً شعورٌ حزبيّ، وعيٌ بالظلم . عندما أجلسُ لكتابة كتاب، لا أقول لنفسي: (سوف أنتج عملاً فنياً)، إنما أكتبه لأن ثمَّة كذبة أريد فضحها أو حقيقة أريد إلقاء الضوء عليها، وهمي الأوليّ هو الحصول علي مستمعين . لكنني ليس بإمكاني القيام بمهمة تأليف كتاب أو حتى مقالة طويلة لمجلة، لو لم تكن أيضاً تجربة جمالية . أيُّ شخص سيتحمل عناء فحص عملي سيري أنَّه حتي عندما يكون دعاية سياسية فجَّة سيتضمن أيضاً الكثير مما يعتبره سياسيٌّ محترف ليس ذا صلة . لست قادراً -ولا أرغب- أن أتخلي كلياً عن منظور العالم الذي اكتسبته في طفولتي . طالما بقيت حياً وبصحةٍ جيدة سوف أستمر بشغفي تجاه أسلوب النثر، وبحب سطح الأرض، وبأن أجد البهجة في أغراضٍ صلبةٍ وقصاصات معلوماتٍ غير نافعة . ليس من المثمر كبح هذا الجانب من ذاتي' .

هذه الفقرة جاءت ضمن مقالة (لماذا أكتب)، وهي واحدة من المقالات التي تضمَّنها الكتاب. من المهم معرفة السياق الذي كُتبت فيه هذه الفقرة داخل المقالة لتبيُّنها بشكل أوضح. لقد كان "أورويل" يتحدث عن الدوافع التي تتلبَّس الكاتب -أي كاتب- وتدفعه إلي الكتابة والتأليف، وهنا يري "أورويل" أنّه إذا وضعنا الحاجة إلي كسب العيش جانبًا نكون، تقريبًا، أمام أربعة دوافع رئيسة للكتابة النثرية هي :
١- حظ الذات : ويتمثل في الرغبة في أن تبدو ذكيًا، ناجحاً، أن يتم الحديث عنك، وأن يُخلَّد اسمك بعد الموت، وأن تحظي بفرصة الانتقام من الأشخاص الذي ضايقوك أو قلَّلوا من قيمتك في صغرك .
٢- الحس الجمالي والتحمس له : إن ادراك الجمال في العالم الخارجي، أو إدراكه في الكلمات ذاتها ومعانيها والترتيب الصحيح والمتناسق لها، كذلك استشعار البهجة من أثر نطق الكلمات والأصوات التي تُلفظ بها والإيقاعات التي تُحدِثها، فضلاً عن الرغبة في مشاركة تجربة ذات قيمة مع الآخرين، إن هذه الأمور جميعها تمثل حافز جمالي للكتابة والتدوين .
٣- الدافع التاريخي : ويتمثل في الرغبة برؤية الأشياء كما هي واكتشاف الحقائق بشكل صحيح ومحايد والمحافظة عليها من أجل الأجيال القادمة .
٤- الهدف السياسي : ويتمثل في الرغبة في دفع العالم نحو اتجاه معين وذلك بتغيير أفكار الأخرين حول نوع الحياة التي يجب عليهم السعي نحوها وتحقيقها .

وقد قال "أورويل" أنه في حالته فإن الدوافع الثلاثة الأولي تغلب وبشدة وتُرجَّح كفتها أمام كفة الدافع الرابع، ومع ذلك فإن العصر الذي وُجد فيه (عاش أوريل بين عامي ١٩٠٣ و ١٩٥٠) وهو عصر حروب كونية وتقلبات سياسية عميقة وجذرية واضطرابات وقلاقل إقليمية وحروب أهلية، فضلًا عمَّا مر به بصفة شخصية من معاناةٍ من الفقر والحاجة وشعورٍ بالمذلة حتَّم عليه أن يكتب أعمالاً سياسية، إذ أنه وجد من العبث المحض محاولة تجاهل كل ما يحدث حوله والكتابة في أمور بعيدة عن السياسة، وهكذا وجد "أورويل" نفسه -مدفوعًا بحوافز سياسية- مضطرًا أن يكتب في السياسة .

وبرغم ذلك، ولأن السياسة لم تكن دافعه الأبرز للكتابة، فإنه حاول أن يكتب في السياسة دون أن يفقد ذائقته الأدبية أو منهجه وأسلوبه الفني، ولهذا فقد حاول أن يجعل من الكتابة السياسية -كما قال- فنًا، وهكذا كانت الفقرة الطويلة المقتبسة أعلاه، وهكذا كان سياقها الذي جاءت فيه .

ومن الجدير بالذكر الإشارة إلي أن مقالة (لماذا أكتب) نُشرت في صيف عام ١٩٤٦، أي قبل نحو عامين أو ثلاثة من كتابة ونشر روايته الأشهر، والتي ساهمت بقدر كبير في تأطير اسمه وتأريخ سيرته ككاتب سياسي وروائي وباحث اجتماعي وناقد عظيم، رواية (١٩٨٤) .

الكتاب عبارة عن مجموعة متنوعة وعديدة من المقالات، بعضها طويل بشكل لافت وبعضها ذو حجم طبيعي، نُشرت للكاتب في صحف ومجلات انجليزية بين أعوام ١٩٣١ و ١٩٤٩، تناول فيها مناقشة موضوعات مختلفة بعضها أدبية وبعضها سياسية وأخري تحدث فيها عن تجارب ومواقف من حياته .

كنت أريد أن أمنح الكتاب تقييمًا من أربعة نجمات، هذا أقل تقييم تستحقه أعمالٌ وكتاباتٌ لجورج اورويل، ولكن الذي منعني من ذلك ما أعتقد أنه -نوعًا ما- حالة الترجمة الرديئة والتي أري أنها التزمت الحَرْفيّة الشديدة والمفرطة في ترجمة معاني الكلمات والعبارات إلي حد كبير، الأمر الذي جعل النص المترجم في مجمله غير مستساغ وغير متسق من حيث البناء والتركيب وغير سهل من حيث القراءة والاستيعاب، وعطَّل الاستمتاع بالعمل الأصلي وقلَّل من قيمته .

شكرًا جورج أورويل، عرفتُك سياسيَّاً متواريَّاً ومراوغاً بشكل موارب في (مزرعة الحيوان)، وعرفتُك سياسيَّاً صريحاً صاحب مبدأ وقضية -وربما مُتنبِّأ ومستشرِفًا أيضًا- في (١٩٨٤)، وعرفتك إنسانًا خالصًا ذو نفس نبيلة في (متشردًا في لندن وباريس)، واليوم تلمَّست من خلال مقالاتك، فضلًا عن كل ما سبق، روحك الساخرة المرحة والهزلية بشكل لافت، وكذلك قدرتك علي القيام بالنقد الأدبي لأعمال ومؤلفات كتَّاب أخرين بحِرفية عالية .

This was like sitting in on an interesting lecture derailed by a wholly unhelpful political rant, only for the lecturer to remember in the last 5 minutes that he must return to the actual lesson.

يعتقد أورويل حين يريد الكتابة و القيام بتأل��ف كتاب أو حتى نشر مقالة أنه ثمة كذبة ما يريد فضحها، ومن هذا الإعتقاد النبيل والإيمان العميق انبثق لنا هذا الكتاب، فهو عبارة عن عدة مقالات كُتبت في مراحل متباعدة من حياته، استعرض فيها أفكاره النقدية الرصينة حول الكتب والكتابة والكتاب ( بتشديد التاء).

To understand why this book means to me as much as it does, it is important to do what Orwell does in the beginning of this book - go back to my childhood. When I was eleven years old, and people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I had one answer: "I don't know what I want to do, but I know I'll never work in politics." Oh, how wrong I was!

A combination of having to closely follow elections because my grandfather did, and watching Aaron Sorkin shows, primarily, however, piqued my interest in said field, the field I had refused to wade in. Indeed, there are a myriad of reasons why I study politics. There are, however, exactly two reasons for why I want to write about politics, and George Orwell is one of them. The other is Stephen Kinzer.

Orwell, throughout his book emphasises on one main fact: that all writing is political. And while that has not shaped my world view or what I write, I believe that it is the cardinal rule we need to accept before we write. Even if, unlike me, you don't write about why we should redefine human trafficking or something equally depressing. General fiction, plays, even thrillers and romance novels, are political. The politics of the writer has a way of seeping into the writing, and that's only a fact of nature.

The primary reason I think everyone should read this book is because Orwell practises what he preaches. The key to good writing, he explains is to keep it simple and stick to the point, and that is what he does. Why I Write is but a hundred pages long. Whereas other books on writing, written by other authors I admire, are at least 3 times the length. Why I Write is indeed the antithesis to all the political writing we see today.

Of course, I'm going to end my review here. It would be a disservice to the man if I waxed poetic about this book, when the crux of his advice is to do exactly the opposite.

This was an interesting book outlining George Orwell's raison d'être for writing. Part social commentary and part leftist tirade, Why I Write elegantly captures Orwell's sociopolitical stance as a writer. He argues quite convincingly that every writer intrinsically has a political purpose in addition to other motivations related to egoism, aesthetics and historical impulse. In his case Orwell clearly has strong leftist (i.e., pro-communist) sentiments. Understandably, this was at a time when many Soviet bloc countries were performing well economically and were therefore the darlings of many western socialists and communists. Towards the end of this work, he also veers off on a slight tangent, perhaps his hobbyhorse at the time, in which he is quite critical about the degradation in the quality of writing in Western media. Despite this, I found Why I Write to be a very thought-provoking book, that I would recommend to others.

من الجميل الاستماع لهذا الصوت الانجليزي الودود و الذي عرفناه عن طريق روائعه الروائية 1984 و مزرعة الحيوان ، اقول أنه لمن الجميل ان يخاطبنا هذه المرة بواسطة المقالات .

كون المقالة كما يصنفها كاتب المقدمة تنتمي الى جنس كتابي غريب ،يمكنها ان تكون متعددة الغايات، لكن لا يجب أن تكون على شكل موعظة كما ان لديها سمة غير رسمية ومرونة أكبر .

فالمقالة هي صوت تفكير مؤلفها بصوت عالي ، يمكنها ان تشير لحقائق وأدلة ولكن بايجاز فهي ليست دفاع قانوني او محاججة ،ولا يجب ان تكون شديدة التخطيط ، بل مجموعة من الارتباطات الحرة .

ودود هو صوت جورج اورويل عبر مقالاته ، رغم كونه صوت لرجل ابيض كان فردا في الشرطة البريطانية الكولونولية في آسيا ابان الاستعمار و شارك في تنفيذ حكم اعدام ( واقعة شنق ) و اصطياد فيلة ووصف هذه الأحداث في اول مقالتين في الكتاب وكان صوته عند وصفها ويال العجب ودودا للغاية ! .

الروح الساخرة في كتابات جورج اورويل مميزة ، و قراءة " لماذا أكتب " اكدت لي انطباعي عن رواية "1984" والديستوبيا التي خلقها هناك حيث لا يجب اغفال الجانب الساخر لدى الكاتب -السخرية المتشحة بالسواد طبعا - .

في كل مرة أقرأ لأورويل اشعر بظلال سوداء حول الكلمات وكأنه يكتب من داخل زنزانة ما ، حتى عندما يحاول الخروج في بعض المقالات عن مواضيع السياسة و النقد الأدبي الى مواضيع أخرى كالطبيعة يبقى هذا الشعور ملازما لي .

قدم جورج اورويل خلال هذه المقالات مدرسة في النقد الأدبي و مراجعة الكتب ،ومقالته " داخل الحوت " الخاصة بهنري ميللر وروايته مدار السرطان تشكل مرجعا متفوقا في هذا المجال .

وعلى صعيد آخر اظن أن جورج اورويل نجح في الاقتراب كثيرا من هدفه المعلن و الذي بتمثل ب" جعل الكتابة السياسية فنا " .

تبدو هذه المقالات كقصص قصيرة تارة ووقائع حقيقية تارةً أخرى .. قرأت هذا فى المقدمة بقلم "برنارد كريك" وتأكدت منها طوال مقالات الكتاب ..
يبدو لى هنا أورويل كاتب المقالات كشخصية مختلفة جداً عما عرفناه ككاتب روايتى 1984 ومزرعة الحيوان .. هل هو فعلاً من يتمتع بإحساس القتل بدم بارد كما فعل فى "واقعة شنق" و "صيد فيل" ؟! .. أو تشبيه الزنوج بقطيع من الماشية فى "مراكش" ؟!
ولكن أورويل يعود بقوة كناقد أدبي محترف فى مقالاته: ( داخل الحوت - ويلز وهتلر ودولة العالم - مارك توين: المضحك المرخص) ويجذب انتباهي لعدة أدباء من عشرينيات وثلاثينيات القرن الماضي كهنرى ميللر -الذى لم أقرأ له قبلا - ورواياته: (مدار السرطان - مدار الجدى - ربيع أسود) ، وجيمس جويس (عوليس) ،وبالطبع ه .ج. ويلز، مارك توين ، تحليله لرحلات جليفر لجوناثان سويفت وأخيرا وصفه لنقد تولستوي لشكسبير ..
بعض المقالات قرأتها قبلاً فى (تراجع جريمة القتل الإنجليزية ) والتى برز فيها أورويل كصحفى يومي .. (لماذا أكتب؟) المقالة الرئيسية التي حمل اسمها عنوان هذه المقالات جاءت كسرد ذاتي لتاريخ حياة أورويل .. كيف بدأ الكتابة والدوافع العامة لمعظم الكتاب -على الأقل لكتابة النثر - [حب الذات الصرف ، الحماس الجمالي، الحافز التاريخي ، الهدف السياسي ].

حقيقةً بعد قراءتي لتحليلات أورويل أجد أنه عمل شائك جداً أن تحترف النقد الأدبى .. بل حتى كتابة مراجعة (ريفيو ) لكتاب كهذا تتطلب الكثير من الثقافة والجرأة ايضاً !
استمتعت بالإقتراب من أورويل بهذا الشكل .. وان استغربت عدم ذكره لروايته الأشهر 1984 على الرغم من ذكره لمعظم أعماله الأخرى ( مزرعة الحيوان - الخروج إلى الهواء الطلق - أيام بورما - تحية الى كاتالونيا) ..

This is a collection of four essays by George Orwell. But I didn’t realize it was an essay collection until I finished reading the third one, and noticed that neither chapter number two or three had anything to do with writing. Maybe it’s because I read much of the book across two airports and two airplanes and was frequently distracted, and then picked it up again when I was sick. Whatever the reason, I thought each essay was a chapter in a book about writing.

The first essay, called Why I Write, but which I thought to be the introductory chapter named after the book, sees Orwell expounding on the beauty of the written word, the power of language, the motives he believes are shared to some degree by all writers, and his early development as a writer. I loved the essay. It was short and seemed like the opening chapter in a very short book about writing. It seemed too short to really get across his love for writing, and so I expected the following essays to build on it.

So imagine my idiotic confusion when reading through the second essay, The Lion and the Unicorn: Socialism and the English Genius, about England’s political state in the context of World War II. A gripping essay, sure. Piercingly observant, scathing and critical, political without being polemical, but measured, well reasoned, patient, and at least for me, educational. Orwell gives a quick rundown of English socialism in contrast to capitalism, Fascism, and communism. His vision for how such a movement might come about is tempered by his speculation of Hitler’s victory, and even more so by forces from within England itself. It’s a good essay, but I admit to being a little confused that he never seemed to tie this subject into why he writes. It dragged a bit, there was some redundancy, some dry spells, its insights were at times profound and at other times lost on me. But most of its weaknesses can be excused for the sheer power of his words in describing an age of violent change and historical importance.

The next essay, A Hanging, a short and brutal recounting of an Indian prisoner’s hanging and Orwell’s reflections on death and the cruelty of humans, is also a good short piece of writing — but it also did not return to the theme of writing. It’s at this point I realized I had been an idiot for almost the entire book. These aren’t chapters, you fool. They’re unrelated essays.

Luckily the fourth essay is also about writing. I think it’s the best of the bunch. It’s called Politics and the English Language. It revisits themes of the three previous essays, but is not recycled material. Here is Orwell’s now famous discussion of bad writing, why it is bad, and how it can be made good. He attacks pretentious diction, dying metaphors, uninspired turns of phrase, the overuse of Latin and Greek words in everyday speech. His clarity of thought and communication sets a standard for writers who want to convey important ideas, while helping readers to spot the types of writing that may disguise or hide bad thinking, bad ideas, or sloppy cognition. Its shortness is a strength, showing how bold and to-the-point writing can be memorable, hold one’s attention, can amuse, and can give life to concepts in a way that drawn out writing might not. It is one of the most noteworthy pieces of writing on the subject of writing I am aware of.

i thought this was really interesting. i love the way that orwell lists everything out before he starts to really get to his point. i feel thats the way that most logical thoughts form anyway. i think he makes a really strong argument for why people do the things they do, be it writing or not. how they grow up and where they find the most affirmation. his numbered reasons for writing really remind me of why any human would have motivation to do anything creative really. sometimes the fear of any creative pursuit being futile can halter a creative outlet from coming to fruition. at least thats how i feel often about art. he was quite inspiring actually.

Why I write:

I feel deeply connected to Orwell. Being so truthful about his childhood, the feeling of loneliness. I'm making up stories in my mind constantly and hearing that this great man did the same makes me for some reason very happy.

Why writers write:
1 egoism, arrogance, vain
2 aesthetic of words
3 historical impulse
4 political reasons

I loved that he was so honest about his motives and said that he lacked political purposes in past books (Animal Farm being his first openly political book) and that he wants to change that, he wants to write more meaningful books. Really great!

Quotes:
"In any case I find that by the time you have perfected any style of writing, you have always outgrown it."

"I wasn't born for an age like this.
Was Smith? Was Jones? Were you?"

-No, George, I wasn't. I'm deeply overwhelmed by the state of the world at the moment. I don't like to neither want to deal with political issues.
