I'll be totally honest, this was far sadder than I had anticipated. I also think I would perhaps consider anyone who might be depressed or suicidal to consider saving this book for a day where they aren't struggling so much.

Nasser Ali Khan's story as depicted in this book is incredibly heartbreaking. Seeing the events surrounding his death unfold on the page is one of the saddest things I have read in some time. I thought this depicted depression and suicidal feelings quite well, especially in the sense that just because one appears successful or loved, doesn't necessarily mean they feel that way. Sometimes a person's depression doesn't make sense to anyone but themselves. Satrapi's art is on point, and her storytelling is in peak form.

On a lighter note, the dish chicken with plums sounded delicious from the description, and I would absolutely want to try it.

I would recommend this, especially to fans of Satrapi's other work. My recommendation comes with a content warning for depression and suicide.

Miras adelante... y no ves nada.

A non-fiction graphic novel memoir about Nasser Ali Khan, a famous Iranian tar player who one day chose to stay in bed and wait for death to come to him after he was unable to replace his tar that was broken by his wife during a heated argument. In the days leading up to his death, readers are shown the regrets Nasser had in his life, stories of how he became so good playing the tar, how he met his wife and also a reflection of his actions.

A book about life to learn, absorb and contemplate.

So I absolutely love Persepolis, it's one of my all-time favourite reads. I'm so amazed by how Marjane Satrapi can explore dark and grim stuff, like loss and societal discrimination, with light humour and hope.

Chicken with Plums is not very different, for me. The art and words are witty and heartbreaking at the same time, as Marjane tells the story of Nasser Ali Khan, a great tar player in Iran, who was also her great-uncle. After an incident with his tar (it's so unexpectedly funny what happens, so I don't want to spoil it here), he decides he wants to die. This graphic novel tells of what happens in the eight days between that decision and his eventual passing.

It's quite a short graphic novel and a quick read. The way Marjane compacts everything is brilliant. I laughed when I didn't expect to at all, given the sad fact looming in the background that Nasser Ali's feeling depressed and he's gonna die. There's a sorta twist at the end that's really beautiful, it made me go "aaah," which collapsed into a sad sigh.

This is so sad. I quite feel sorry for the musician, he wasn't the nicest person, but for artists, their passion is everything, as for him was his music. This was a little heartbreaking at times. Love that can't be, an instrument that can't be recovered, and a life that can't change.
