Marjane Satrapi (Persian: مرجان ساتراپی) is an Iranian-born French contemporary graphic novellist, illustrator, animated film director, and children's book author. Apart from her native tongue Persian, she speaks English, Swedish, German, French and Italian.

Satrapi grew up in Tehran in a family which was involved with communist and socialist movements in Iran prior to the Iranian Revolution. She attended the Lycée Français there and witnessed, as a child, the growing suppression of civil liberties and the everyday-life consequences of Iranian politics, including the fall of the Shah, the early regime of Ruhollah Khomeini, and the first years of the Iran-Iraq War. She experienced an Iraqi air raid and Scud missile attacks on Tehran. According to Persepolis, one Scud hit the house next to hers, killing her friend and entire family.

Satrapi's family are of distant Iranian Azeri ancestry and are descendants of Nasser al-Din Shah, Shah of Persia from 1848 until 1896. Satrapi said that "But you have to know the kings of the Qajar dynasty, they had hundreds of wives. They made thousands of kids. If you multiply these kids by generation you have, I don't know, 10-15,000 princes [and princesses]. There's nothing extremely special about that." She added that due to this detail, most Iranian families would be, in the words of Simon Hattenstone of The Guardian, "blue blooded."

In 1983, at the age of 14 Satrapi was sent to Vienna, Austria by her parents in order to flee the Iranian regime. There she attended the Lycée Français de Vienne. According to her autobiographical graphic novel, Persepolis, she stayed in Vienna through her high school years, staying in friends' homes, but spent three months living on the streets. After an almost deadly bout of pneumonia, she returned to Iran. She studied Visual Communication, eventually obtaining a Master's Degree from Islamic Azad University in Tehran.

During this time, Satrapi went to numerous illegal parties hosted by her friends, where she met a man named Reza, a veteran of the Iran-Iraq War. She married him at the age of 21, but divorced roughly three years later. Satrapi then moved to Strasbourg, France.

Durante este tercer tomo nuestra protagonista se encuentra en Austria, la adolecencia, aun aquella alejada de la guerra de forma directa tiene sus propias dificultades. Entontrar un lugar donde permanecer es un verdero desafío, adpatarse y relacionarse es otro problema. No es un tomo tan interesante como los anteriores pero es un espacio importante para entender porque alguien que a logrado salir de un pais en guerra decide volver.
Ser migrante es siempre dificil.

No quiero regresar no quiero regresar no quiero que regrese no quiero regresar.
Es que esta historia hace que te des cuenta que los finales felices o no existen o para llegar a ellos esta bieeen cabrón :( Justo cuando crees que la vida de nuestra protagonista no se puede complicar mas le pasa cada cosa... Impotencia es lo que describe lo que siente uno como lector al leer y saber que muchas de estas cosas pasaron y siguen pasando en un lugar del mundo. La realidad es dura y la naturaleza humana también lo es :( Repito, nadie merece vivir así.

De los tres primeros libros, creo que este es el que ha debido ser más difícil para la autora. Porque ella no está bien, pero esta vez no es debido a la opresión de Irán y a la guerra.

Estar en un sitio sin las dificultades y problemas de su país parecería motivo suficiente para que le fueran bien las cosas y sin embargo... por desgracia no es así. Todo lo contrario.
(Ojalá haya conseguido reencontrarse y que la vida le dé un poco de tranquilidad, estabilidad y amor.)

چهار سال اقامت مرجان در اطریش تو جلد سوم به تصویر کشیده میشه. اوایل کتاب به توصیفات خنده دار نویسنده از اختلافات فرهنگی کشور سنتی ایران و اروپا می گذره...سر در گمی های نرمال یک مهاجر بخصوص از یک کشور کاملا متفاوت و متضاد

با گذر زمان و مطابقت با این تغییرات و اختلافات اونچه که مرجان رو اذیت می کنه دوری از خانواده و کمبود محبت و نگاه متعصبانه اطریشی ها به یه دختر جهان سومی ایرانیه و عواقبی که همه اینها براش به دنبال داشتن... که حقیقتا ناراحت کننده س.

The name and the cover of the book attracted my attention in the bookstore and when I flipped the pages I found that the story was written in a comic strip form. The information on the back page was intriguing and I picked up this book without having any more information about it. “Persepolis” which is reference to ancient capital of Persia (Today’s Iran) is an autobiographical account of author Marjane Satrapi about her growing years in Iran before and after the Islamic revolution and her years spent in Europe where she went for college education.

The story tells us how a little girl growing up in Iran gets influenced by revolutionary ideas against the Shah of Iran even though her own family had one time served the King. The protests, killings and eventual revolution had a deep impact on the girl but after the Islamic revolution and start of Iran-Iraq war things begin to change. Her parents send her to Europe so that she can study. Here she undergoes conflict between her traditional upbringing and the freedom in society that she encounters.

This book was a wonderful change where I was reading a comic which was not superhero centric or meant for children. The story was serious but depiction in comics made it lighter to read and more enjoyable. Revolutions, war, protests change the destiny of the countries but their impact on children and families can be much more devastating. I really liked the way tradition, religion and new age values have been mixed together in this book. I wonder why this genre of comics is so rare.

Este fue el volumen que mas me agrado. Desde el prólogo me cautivo demasiado y tuve que leerlo de principio a fin. Me encantó la explicación de los cambios, el contacto con las drogas, odie la filosofía barata y vana de mommo y ame el consejo de la abuela.
Me sentí identificada con el cambio que sufre y como reindicarse fue primordial en su tiempo en Viena, en definitiva, este volumen se merece 5 estrellas
