Foi uma leitura bastante interessante. Acompanhámos a autora desde os dez anos de idade, quando começou a revolução islâmica, que fez com que o país regredisse bastante nas liberdades dos seus cidadãos, a sua ida, aos catorze anos, para a Áustria, o retorno ao seu país Natal, terminando com a decisão da sua ida para França. Não conhecia quase nada da história do Irão e através deste livro, que é um paralelo entre a história de vida da autora e a do seu país, fiquei a saber um pouco mais. Marjane não doura a pílula e até conta alguns episódios em que, para mim, não ficou muito bem na fotografia. Houve um em particular, The Makeup, em que eu a achei infantil e até parva e foi preciso a avó "dar-lhe na cabeça" para ela perceber como agiu mal. Mas quem sou eu para julgar, até porque sempre foi muito politizada e capaz de defender os seus pontos de vista, mesmo correndo risco de ser perseguida pelos guardiões da revolução. É um excelente livro para perceber um pouco melhor a história recente do Irão, um país que é muito mais do que os seus últimos quarenta anos.

جزئات بیشتر و مفصل‌تری نسبت به انیمیشن سینمایی داشت و تصویر جالب و تلخی از زندگی‌ای که متاثر از انقلاب شده نشون داد. خیلی خوندنیه.

"Life is too short to be lived badly"

I finished this book in one sitting. I normally don't write reviews but this book is amazingly good and is worth all the hype. It has a lot of humour, compassion and heartbreaks. I absolutely loved Marjane as the little rebellious girl who spoke her mind, as the girl who lost her way and couldn't hold her dignity, as the girl who came back and proved herself, and also as the writer who has written this book so beautifully. To have lived in such oppression then living with freedom for four years, then coming back again to such oppression and carrying on just shows how much strong a woman can be. Marjane's family are like icing on the cake in this book. Every character in this book is very well written.It is lighthearted yet intense and as a person who doesn't know a lot about Iran, I confess I got to know a lot about Iran through this book.

The famous auto-biographical tale of an Iranian woman growing up during the fall of the Shah and the actualisation of the Islamic and cultural revolution. A terrific book, managing to capture the voices of childhood and youth whilst telling the story of living under the Shah and then the fundamentalist regime.

Please note that the author grew up in an upper middle class neighbourhood in a community of Marxist leanings and I would suggest that some of the Iranian history depicted should be taken with a pinch of salt, but ultimately this book is about Marjane, living in a permissive and liberal household and trying to find her identity during some of the most change-ridden times of modern Persian history. The sequences of her student days in Austria were also gripping. Superb book, recommended. 9 out of 12 Four Star read.

مرجان ساتراپی, با گرافیک ناول «پرسپولیس» یه  کار سطح بالای بصری و احساسی خلق کرده. کاری که فارغ از تکنیک جذاب گرافیکی ، برای ما ایرانیان یک تجربه عمیق عاطفی و درد مشترکیه که مرجان اونو فریاد زده.
● اون توی این کتاب با هر خط ساده‌، تو رو می‌بره به قلب یه داستان از انقلاب، جنگ، مهاجرت و هویت، و با جادوی قدرتمند  قصه‌گویی، نمی‌ذاره حتی یه لحظه چشم ازش برداری. تصور کن یه دختر جوون با قلم و جوهر سیاه، توی دهه‌های پرآشوب زندگی‌ش، تصمیم می‌گیره داستانش رو نه فقط بنویسه، بلکه تصویرگری کنه.
● کنتراست شدید سیاه و سفید توی «پرسپولیس» فقط یه انتخاب هنری نیست، یه سلاحه. توی صحنه‌های بمباران تهران، سیاهی غلیظ پس‌زمینه انگار داره همه‌چیز رو می‌بلعه. خونه‌ها، آدما، حتی امید رو. ولی ساتراپی با خطوط سفید نازک و لرزان، صورتای پر از وحشت یا دستای مشت‌شده‌ مقاوم رو از دل اون تاریکی می‌کشه بیرون. مثلاً توی یه پنل، فقط یه جفت چشم با خطوط سفید تو سیاهی دیده می‌شه، و همون کافیه که حس کنی قلب مرجی داره تند می‌زنه. این ترفند ریشه‌ش تو سینمای اکسپرسیونیست آلمانی دهه ۱۹۲۰ هستش (فکر کن به «کابینه دکتر کالیگاری» با سایه‌های تیز و ترسناکش) ولی ساتراپی اون تکنیک رو شخصی کرده، انگار داره با جوهر قلمش درد و رنجش رو فریاد می‌زنه.
● چیز مهم دیگه ای که توی اینکار وجود داره و باید بهش توجه بشه، پرسپکتیو احساسی عه که انگار داری از چشمای مرجی ۶-۷ ساله به دنیا نگاه می‌کنی. بزرگ‌ترا با پاهای بلند و کشیده، مثل غولای افسانه‌ای، از پایین به بالا کشیده شدن (مثل وقتی معلمش داره سرش داد می‌زنه، و صورتش فقط یه جفت ابرو و یه خط دهن عصبانیه که بالای کادر گم می‌شه. یا توی یه صحنه که باباش داره از زندان حرف می‌زنه، زاویه طوریه که انگار اون یه کوه عظیمه و مرجی یه نقطه کوچیک زیرش.) این تکنیک، که از تجربه بچگیش میاد، تو رو می‌ذاره وسط اون دنیای پر از ترس، هیستری و کنجکاوی. جزئیات گرافیکی کار دیوونه‌کننده‌ست؛ مثلاً خطوط تار دور صورت بزرگ‌ترا، که انگار نشون می‌ده مرجی هنوز نمی‌تونه اونا رو کامل بفهمه. هیجان این داستان و تصویرگری ها اینجاست که خودت حس می‌کنی داری با مرجیبزرگ می‌شی و اینها رو تجربه می‌کنی.
● و امااا طنز و تراژدی کنار هم! ساتراپی مثل یه شعبده‌باز، با خطوطش تو رو می‌خندونه و یهو اشکت رو درمیاره. توی یه پنل، مرجی با خدا بحث می‌کنه (بنظرم بهترین قسمت داستانه) خدا با ریش بلند و ابروهای بالا، مثل یه بابابزرگ بامزه کشیده شده، و مرجی با دهن گشاد و چشم‌های گرد داره غر می‌زنه که چرا دنیا این‌جوریه. خطوط اغراق‌شده و کارتونی، که مستقیم از چارلی چاپلین تو «روشنایی‌های شهر» میاد، یه طنز تلخ می‌سازه که انگار می‌گه زندگی یه موزیک مسخره‌س ولی بیا باهاش برقصیم!  و درست یه صفحه بعد، وقتی خبر مرگ عمو آنوش می‌رسه، خطوط نرم و سنگین می‌شن، صورت مرجی با چشم‌های بزرگ و یه خط اشک ساده، تو یه پس‌زمینه سیاه غلیظ، انگار داره غمش رو فریاد می‌زنه. این جابه‌جایی سریع، از کمدی صامت چاپلین و احتمالا تجربه شخصیش تو فرهنگ ایرانی میاد (جایی که با طنز از درد می‌گذری).
● تکرار الگوها هم مهمن. توی تظاهرات، خطوط آدمای سیاه‌پوش پشت سر هم ردیف شدن، اول صاف و منظم، مثل سربازای آماده، ولی هر چی جلوتر می‌ری، خطوط کج‌تر و شلخته‌تر می‌شن، انگار جمعیت داره تو خودش می‌پیچه. توی یه صحنه که مردم تو صف نونن، تکرار شکل سرها و دستا یه ریتم می‌سازه که انگار صدای همهمه‌شون تو گوشِت‌ه. این تکنیک، که یه لمس از مینیاتورای پارسی با الگوهای منظمش داره، تو رو می‌بره وسط اون هرج‌ومرج و هیجان جوریکه حس می‌کنی خودت داری شعار می‌دی یا تو صف عرق می‌ریزی!
● و فضاهای خالی؟ این دیگه یه شاهکار احساسیه! توی لحظه‌هایی که مرجی تو اروپا تنهاست، یه پنل هست که فقط خودش رو تخت کشیده شده با چند خط ساده، تو یه صفحه سفید بزرگ. سفیدی دورش انگار داره سکوت غربت رو فریاد می‌زنه، یا وقتی عموش اعدام می‌شه، فضای خالی دورش حس پوچی رو نشون می‌ده. اهمیت جزئیاتش اینجاست که هیچ خط اضافه‌ای نیست، فقط چند منحنی ساده، ولی انگار همینا یه دنیا غم رو رو شونه‌هات می‌ذاره. این خالی بودن، که از سادگی کمیک‌های خط روشن مثل تن‌تن میاد، تو رو مجبور می‌کنه خودت اون فضای خالی رو با تجربه احساسیت پر کنی؛ یه جادوی بصری که فقط از ساتراپی برمیاد.
● مرجان با پشتوانه یه مخزن عمیق تأثیرات هنری از بزرگترین هنرمندان جهان، و تجربیات واقعی خودش این اثر رو آفریده. اون این تاثیرات رو با هویت دوگانه‌ش، با تجربه مهاجرت از ایران به فرانسه، با اشک‌ها و لبخند‌های خودش ترکیب کرده و تونسته شاهکار بصری_ روایی پرسپولیس رو خلق کنه.
خوندن و تماشای این کتاب رو (دو جلده و فقط جلد اول به فارسی ترجمه شده) به همه پیشنهاد میکنم. حتی از کسایی که قبلا خوندنش دعوت میکنم اینبار با توجه به این نکاتی که گفتم دوباره بخونن‌ش.

Marjane Satrapi nos cuenta su historia en "Persepolis", una poderosa autobiografía que transmite diversas y profundas emociones; nos introduce a un escenario caótico y dramático pero aún pudiendo tornar su obra depresiva y desolada, evita la victimización por medio del humor y algunas veces, el sarcasmo. Nos narra su perspectiva, y también su ideología que evoluciona constante y progresivamente conforme se avanza en la lectura.

La historia se divide en cuatro partes; la primera nos narra sus años ingenuos e infantes, en los que sus pensamientos son los de una niña dividida entre dos mundos: el que le exponen sus padres liberales y el que le presenta su escuela y su religión. La segunda, nos introduce en su pensamiento influenciado por algunas lecturas, el paso del tiempo y la complejidad que su ambiente representaba. La tercera, su vida fuera de su entorno conocido y su constante necesidad de encajar dada su falta de identidad; que se ve influenciada por el movimiento punk. Finalmente llegamos a la cuarta y una de las dos mejores partes, donde nos encontramos a una mujer completa en busca de la emancipación y la libertad.

"Persepolis" es perfecta, pues llega a enseñarnos mucho en muy poco. Expone la censura, el machismo y la opresión en la Irán durante el tiempo de los Guardianes de la Revolución.

Sin duda alguna, un libro esencial para aquellos que pretenden expandir su mente y aprender sobre temas realmente importantes.

Personalmente, de lo mejor de mi año. Y eso que he leído cosas demasiado buenas.

This is the first graphic novel I ever read, and it made me want to explore the genre much more. Persepolis tells the coming of age story of rebellious Marjane during the Iranian revolution. In the comic strips, we see Marjane deal with newly imposed Islamic law; a family ripped apart, her desire to listen to Western music, first relationships with boys, and much, much more. If you have never read a graphic novel, this is a great one to start with.

A semi-autobiographical book, this story offered such great insight into the history of Iran, particularly during the 1950s all the way through to the 80s, covering the Islamic revolution, the war with Iraq and the invasion of the West. It's a story about a young girl growing up during that particular time period and it follows her journey throughout.

The language is simple, blunt and effective. It highlighted the danger and recklessness when religion (Islam, in this case) is interpreted in ones own way. When there's no sense of balance (as Islam teaches) and the faith is practised in an ignorant, overzealous manner, driving the person to the point of absolute absurdity. For example, thinking that there's a need of having police that patrol the streets, in order to keep people's behaviours and moral compass in check. Because they have convinced themselves that practising the faith will be better established this way. There's a scene in the book where the protagonist, Marjane, is stopped by those so called policemen, because she was running. She was in a hurry (as if some kind of justification is needed for this) but they asked her to stop running because of the way her backside would move when she would run. There are so many points where this book just makes you genuinely angry!

On the flip-side, Satrapi calls out the West for its manipulation of invading Iran and other Middle Eastern countries, media outlets for portraying a single narrative and the danger of it, as it takes away the complexity of a situation, which in turn forces you to dehumanise them of everything, leading to inequality. All for the sake of destruction and power.

But this book isn't preachy. I loved the historical aspect to it, however, it covers Marjane's childhood to early teens, growing up in Iran, having to be moved to Austria by her parents, because they want a better life for her, being an outcast in a society, an immigrant, and the identity and psychological issues that it can lead to.

Incredibly insightful read!

One of the things I loved about this book was Marjane's very individual voice and how it transformed from the start of the book when she is 10 to the end, when she is 22. Ten-year-old Marjane, by the way, is about the most awesome kid I have encountered in print. She reminded me of Harper Lee's Scout, except Marjane was cuter and more hilarious. Also, more political.

Most readers are unlikely to be really conversant in 20th Iranian political history and it is absolutely fascinating to be introduced to the topic through the eyes of an impressionable child, an emotional teenager and a jaded young adult. Marjane tells her story in an intense, honest, funny and heartbreaking fashion.

The style of art is beautiful and everything is drawn in a kind of a kooky way. I though that the style reinforced that this whole story comes from one young person's distinct point of view. As in all graphic novels, the images are just as potent, if not more, than the plot itself and this is no exception.

"Persepolis" is the best book I can think of to introduce the uninitiated to the world of graphic novels. The subject matter is the polar opposite of the superhero comic stereotype and the intense, skillful storytelling will captivate even the mots doubting reader.

I adored it.

This is a story of Satrap's childhood; growing up in a loving family in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution. We also follow Marjane in her high school years in Vienna. It is an interesting journey of a young girl becoming an independent woman. 

n  My Thoughts:n

I enjoyed the graphic novel style. It is an interesting concept of telling a story and I really liked it. It was easy to read and quick to engage with.

Even though I liked Marjane’s story, I didn’t like Marjane as a character. She seems a bit too arrogant. She seemed to always need to prove to the world who she is and what she is about. I have met a few people like that in my life and found them annoying. 

It was really interesting to read about the culture and history of Iran and I loved the places in the book where they showed us the major differences in culture and beliefs. Growing up in Macedonia, I am no stranger to this culture, nor the beliefs, as Macedonia is a country with many different nationalities and religions living together. I have seen things, and I have heard things. 

The writing was very humorous and the story plot was quite interesting. I didn't really feel any emotions during the book, but the sad ending really got me. What a way to finish a book.

n  In conclusion, I have mixed feelings about The Complete Persepolis, only due to the way the character was set up and her attributes. However, I loved the representation of Iran, the way we are thrown into the culture and mindset, and how this book made me think twice.n
