Tales From Shakespeare is a collection of Shakespeare's plays that have been simplified and re-written as prose.

I was impressed by this. The stories are well-written and easy to read. I know that a lot of Shakespeare's beautiful wording was cut out, so I'd still love to read the actual plays, but these were perfect introductions.

Basically, if you want to find out who on earth Macbeth is but you aren't quite ready to delve into the play, look no further.

Favorites:
Much Ado About Nothing (benedick+beatrice)
Othello (heartbreaking)
Romeo and Juliet (of course)
Hamlet (woah)

This book holds a number of Shakespeare's classics from Hamlet, Merchant of Venice, Twelfth Night and Romeo & Juliet (just to name a few).

This book summarises the story into small chunks of readings condensing one of Shakespeare's fantastic plays into just 14 pages. It is an intense read as some of the language used it quite difficult to read. But this book could bring a load of new language into the classroom and build upon their vocabulary to make it more mature.

At some intervals in the book there are pictures. This could help bring the imagination out of the children and help them build a mental image of the setting and characters Shakespeare is trying to portray. This could also then be seen as a cross curriculum link, with art as the children could explore art from that time period or explore the geography of the locations of the play (e.g. Verona, Venice).

This book is definitely for an older reader (year 5/6) and the child would have to be passionate about this genre of literature in order for them to read it for their pleasure but, this book could almost certainly be used within a class to inspire some writing based on the style and vocabulary of Shakespeare.

As a fan of Shakespeare I love this book and would use it in a classroom for a teacher who is not such a fan they would have to read the book and discover the language of Shakespeare in advance to use it effectively within the classroom.

Wondefully concise versions of Shakespeares plays in the ultimate homage to the Bard.

I have used this book so many times, to read the synopsis of a play before seeing it performed at Stratford.

"It has been wished to make these Tales easy reading for very young children. To the utmost of their ability the writers have constantly kept this in mind; but the subjects of most of them made this a very difficult task. It was no easy matter to give the histories of men and women in terms familiar to the apprehension of a very young mind. For young ladies too, it has been the intention chiefly to write; because boys being generally permitted the use of their fathers' libraries at a much earlier age than girls are, they frequently have the best scenes of Shakespeare by heart, before their sisters are permitted to look into this manly book; and, therefore, instead of recommending these Tales to the perusal of young gentlemen who can read them so much better in the originals, their kind assistance is rather requested in explaining to their sisters such parts as are hardest for them to understand: and when they have helped them to get over the difficulties, then perhaps they will read to them (carefully selecting what is proper for a young sister's ear) some passage which has pleased them in one of these stories, in the very words of the scene from which it is taken; and it is hoped they will find that the beautiful extracts, the select passages, they may choose to give their sisters in this way will be much better relished and understood from their having some notion of the general story from one of these imperfect abridgments; which if they be fortunately so done as to prove delightful to any of the young readers, it is hoped that no worse effect will result than to make them wish themselves a little older, that they may be allowed to read the Plays at full length (such a wish will be neither peevish nor irrational)."

These stories are a perfect way to introduce children to Shakespeare’s plays. I loved this book when I was 10, and I’m convinced it’s one of the main reasons I was a Shakespeare fanatic well before I entered high school.

This book did its job. Which for my parents was: getting me interested in and having a rough knowledge of Shakespeare.

The Judi Dench (who I did not know about) introduction which I did NOT care for as a child, now seems interesting.

* This review is going to be slightly short.

I got this book on my 20th birthday. A friend of mine knew how much I suffer reading Shakespeare and that I always read simple summaries before reading the original plays, so it was very thoughtful of her to bring a book that contains the most famous plays of Shakespeare retold in a very clear and easy-to-follow style. The plays are written as "short-stories" which made the book even easier to comprehend.

Generally, the book is pretty helpful for non-English speakers. I usually pick up a certain play and read it from this book before, during or after reading the original play to make sure I understood the play completely and perfectly.

Another great collection of William Shakespeare's plays, rewritten in prose. Clearly Charles Lamb and Mary Lamb did a great job in making those stories more readable for children and people speaking modern English, while still maintaining the spirit of and core values of Shakespeare's plays. Now I get to know some more of his stories, including "The Tempest", "Much Ado About Nothing", "As You Like It" and "Twelfth Night" :))
