This is one of the best philosophy books of the twentieth century. Popper is a great thinker and, somewhat surprisingly, an excellent writer.
His treatment of Hegel may be unfair - I haven't read him - and of Marx - whom I have read - a little harsh too. Nonetheless, the analysis he uses to challenge them is in places genius. Whatever your views on Marx and Hegel, the book is worth a read.
Must Read! Intelligenr, witty, important. I finally understood the reactionary philosophy of Hegel leading to two world wars and how the profound analyses of Marx could turn (or be turned) into the totalitarism of Stalin.
Volume 2, dealing with Hegel and Marx, with an in-depth critique of the moral theory of historicism and whether history has any meaning, in light of oracular philosophy and the revolt against reason.
Popper himself is reported not to be very democratic and pluralistic in his personal life. They say this book should be called: The Open Society by One of Its Enemies.
this book should be read complete, the two volumes. In the first explains Plato as the creator of the totalitarian ideology in politics and their enormous influence posterior.
I recommend reading Kaufmann's review along with the book (https://www.marxists.org/reference/su...). Also, some of Popper's credible critiques of historicism from the last chapter can be directly used against his logical positivistic approach in the very same book!
