This volume involves more emotions. This is a good reminder for us that they are still human beings or kids despite they have mechanical body parts.

For a change, there are some differences between the manga and the Brotherhood anime, and possibly for the first time, I unequivocally think the manga handled it better!

Specifically, the whole moment where Ed tries to transmute a bridge for Dominic to be able to ride into town to get a doctor---and he FAILS at it.

Like, he straight up just fails. I think this is the first time in the series that Ed actively tries to fix a problem with alchemy, and no matter how hard he tries, he just can't do it. (Bc while Ed may consider their attempted transmutation of their mom as a failure, on a technical level their human transmutation did succeed; additionally, Ed couldn't save Nina, but he also didn't actually try to do any alchemy on her.) The scientific explanation that Al gives for why this transmutation is doomed to fail is neat, but regardless of the reason, I think this failure is such an important moment for Ed's character. It adds to his sense of helplessness while Winry steps up to the plate to deliver the baby, and further enhances his awe and admiration for Winry, as Ed will bring this moment up again during his speech about Winry's hands being meant to heal and give life (said scene literally makes me sob like a baby, every single time). But this also further ties into Ed's character arc over the course of the series. Ultimately, the lesson Ed needs to learn is that alchemy can't solve all of his problems, that it's unhealthy for him to make it a core pillar of his identity; his journey is about learning to let go of that mindset, to accept that he is a small, flawed human, and that there is no shame in that. Ed's growth is about getting him to a place where he can cast his alchemy aside and not regret it, bc he's discovered what truly matters. And THIS moment of failure is the first true step forward that Ed is making on his road to his character development. It's just a fantastic scene, and I wish it hadn't been cut from BH.

As the series goes on, I'm getting less surprised at its popularity. This is just a fun, optimistic adventure story. And yes, that does cross over into idealism sometimes, but still, in an era where everything has to be dark or it gets written off as meaningless, it's good to have something that doesn't take itself too seriously. The series has a lot of re-read value because of that, and I think that's why it got so popular - it's so easy to come back to. Is it perfect? No - the worldbuilding is still kind of weak, the idealism is a little over-the-top at times, and this is the second volume so far that ends on a supremely unimpressive cliffhanger. But this is just a fun, smart series, and I look forward to reading more.

while Ed, Al and Winry deliver the baby, I think they know how valuable the life is and human couldn't make a human by alchemy.

This manga deals in a very good way with the idea of how sacred a human life is, whether through witnessing a woman giving birth, or dealing with the whole "bringing people back from the dead" thing. I loved seeing more of winry in this volume, and I loved the extensive details of the two brothers' background and past, and what they went through.

2024 review:
- yes, an adventure with winry is the best
- the training arc is a necessity in any shounen manga, and i loved their badass sensei.
