Winry Rockbell, a prosthetics engineer and potential love interest for our hero, takes center stage for the first half of the volume before we veer into the start of an Elric Brothers origin story.

As always, Arakawa is great at writing character bits. As I know from Silver Spoon, her one fault may be the sheer number of side characters she introduces and constantly brings back. Things are manageable so far with a villain group, a military group, and now an extended family (genetic and chosen) group for the Elrics.

The series is definitely getting into its groove now, and I have requested another stack of six volumes from the library.

EN RESUMEN
Ed y Al viajan para reencontrarse con su maestra, pero en el medio se detienen en Rush Valley por pedido de Winry.

ACLARACIÓN:
Todos estos puntos están de alguna forma influenciados por conocimientos y opiniones que ya tenía sobre la historia gracias a la adaptación del anime, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

ASPECTOS POSITIVOS
- Otra vez estamos con un tomo centrado en el desarrollo de personaje. Arakawa quiere por fin independizar a Winry y le da su propio mini arco para convertirla en una mejor mecánica, de manera que pueda apoyar a Ed y Al cuando lo necesiten. Su pequeña historia con la familia del mecánico fue adorable y dio lugar a muchos momentos divertidos y tiernos entre la familia, Ed y Al y Winry.
También se empieza a perfilar la relación romántica entre Ed y Winry, lo que no tiene demasiada relevancia en sí pero si tenés en cuenta que son de las pocas parejas que tiene sentido y desarrollo entre los manga shounen entonces todo toma una nueva perspectiva lmao. En fin, lo que quiero decir es que me gusta verlos interactuar.
- Se nos presenta nuevos personajes: la maestra de los chicos, Izumi, y su MUY ADORABLE esposo, Sig. Este segmento de la historia busca profundizar mucho más en la alquimia y en cómo los humanos hacer un abuso de ella. Volvemos a los temas de la mortalidad, la pérdida y el ciclo dela vida y nos adentramos en la vida de Ed y Al y los momentos previos a lo ocurrido el 3 de octubre.
- El humor sigue estando a la altura y equipara los pequeños momentos tensos.

ASPECTOS NEGATIVOS
- Paninya es el personaje más insoportable presentado por Arakawa hasta el momento. Entiendo el punto de su introducción pero eso no quitó que no tenga ganas de cachetearla cada vez que abría la boca. Y su desarrollo fue forzoso: en un página le parecía que robar estaba bien y en la próxima ya no lo iba a hacer más. Bitch please.
- Mi mayor problema fue que, aunque importante para Winry, la primera parte se alargó demasiado y solo dejó unas cuantas páginas para Izumi, la alquimia y el pasado de Ed y Al. El tomo en sí se sintió mucho más lento de lo usual.

CONCLUSIÓN
Incluso con la magia de Arakawa intacta, el volumen 3 de Fullmetal Alchemist sufre problemas de ritmo y no presenta mucho más hasta bien entrado el tomo.

Noto sempre di più come l'autrice abbia integrato molto bene scene divertenti senza scadere nel ridicolo, scene sentimentali senza essere sdolcinata, e azione.
Ho poi come l'impressione che la storia dietro al padre dei due fratelli (che carini da piccoli! E amo ancora di più Al) sia più complicata di quello che sembra anche a loro, mi sembra strano che ad un certo punto se ne sia andato all'improvviso. E via col sesto volume!
Personaggi preferiti so far: Al, Gluttony

I really liked this volume, and the themes that carried through with it.

There were two main stories, one focusing in Winry, and the other on the brothers, but they both talked about apprenticeship and the value of life, which I really liked.

I like how all the volumes feel complete, in and of themself, and each feel planned out, not just a continuation of the previous one.

Laughed out loud quite a few times in this volume. Loved the circular nature of life and death too, probably one of my favorite volumes so far.

Volume five had some ups and had some downs. I loved reading about Rush Valley and getting to see this auto-mail mecca and the engineers (and people in need of them!) that lived there. Also reading about the story and the lessons learned by and from the pick pocket was good fun. Who knew one girl could give two alchemists so much trouble? And she does! It’s great fun! The most powerful part of the book was where the boys learned the limits of alchemy and the wonders of the human condition as they got to attend the birth of a baby. The creation of a human life is something alchemy cannot achieve and was just one of the many ways the boys are truly humbled in Rush Valley.

The story gets a little shaky after the boys leave to meet their teacher and the book flashes back to when they first started learning alchemy, and why. I thought that the scenes with their teacher when they show up on her doorstep from Rush Valley were a little forced. They were obviously supposed to show us some of their teacher’s beliefs and teachings without Ed and Al having to “tell” us them. But having random kids show up right at that time just so Teacher could solve their problems and show us the limits and proper attitudes towards alchemy that she likes to teach was almost more than could be believed. I wish that was done in a different way.

All in all another great addition to the Fullmetal Alchemist series. I enjoyed reading about the boys adventures – not to mention watching their interactions with Winry, Teacher and each other – and of course watching them eat their huge helping of humble pie that they have to choke down in every chapter of this volume!

I’m falling in love with this story

This was a great volume as the trinity go to Rush valley which is the mecca of Prosthetics and we meet this girl Paninya and she has taken Ed's watch and they chase her and meet the family of Ridel and his wife Satera and there they help deliver a baby and Winry trains under someone next. Its such a great part as its a breather and shows the sanctity of life and beauty of birth and from there they go to Dublith to meet their teacher and we see their history with their teacher and all that entails there.

This was a good one and helps flesh out their characters, building up the past and showing their dark origin and I like how it balances dark and light sides of the manga. Also great character growth for Winry. She is really coming into her own as a character and I am loving the art here!

Los hermanos Elric junto con Winry viajan a Rush Valley, un lugar en el que la gran mayoría de sus habitantes usan el automail (prótesis que comúnmente son de metal). Allí, una chica llamada Paninya le roba a Ed un reloj de plata que lo califica como alquimista del gobierno, así que éste la persigue por las calles con tal de recuperar su posesión.

Paninya es muy ágil, tanto o más que Ed, pero esto se debe a que ambas piernas son un automail. Un ingeniero muy capaz fue quien se las construyó, y como era de esperarse, Winry le pide que los lleve hasta donde se encuentra dicho sujeto.

El creador de tan conveniente diseño se niega a aceptar a Winry como su discípula, sin embargo, sí le muestra su agradecimiento tras ayudar a su hija embarazada a dar a luz.

Ahora bien, Ed y Al se enfrentan a una situación muy frustrante pues en su intento de ayudar a la mujer embarazada, la alquimia no resulta de gran apoyo y es cuando deciden volver a ver a su maestra, aquella que les enseñó cómo utilizar la alquimia cuando eran unos niños.

Al final del tomo, su maestra Izumi les pregunta qué fue lo que verdaderamente ocurrió pues el alma de Alphonse está atrapada dentro de la armadura y Edward perdió un brazo y una pierna.

Creo que ya con 5 volúmenes leídos puedo decir que esta historia me gusta, es entretenida y fluye muy bien. Pero no ha logrado entrar a mi lista de favoritos. De todas formas, voy a continuar leyéndolo y a ver qué pasa después.

Este volumen incluye los capítulos 17 – 21.
