Really really enjoyed this book! So much so I finished it in one sitting. Most of the characters in the book seem to have mixed feelings about Kurdas “betrayal” and personally I found myself feeling sorry for him as well. Perfect example of trying to do the right things but getting it tragically wrong in the process.

A lot of things happened in this book. Darren was dying after his escape from the Vampire Mountain, and wouldn't have survived had he not meet his old friends. He sneaked in to Seba's room to share what he knew in case someone found him and killed him before the truth was revealed. Then he came up with the grand plan to attack those vampaneze in hiding, and also took someone's lives for the first time. He lost his good friend Arra Sails (her death devastated Mr. Crepsley even more). Then it was time for Kurda to tell the reason behind his treachery, which at the end left everyone confused. And a major twist of fate happened to the vampire assistant at the end of this book.

I know Darren Shan is the main character; the center of attention of this book, but it puzzles me that the vampires in this book –even the Vampire Princes– are so 'weak'. Not physically weak, of course, but what roles exactly do they play? The princes seem almost helpless in this book. They weren't the ones who came up with the idea of how to attack the vampaneze. I mean, a great plan is not limited to the princes' or generals' minds, but at least contribute something! It looks like everything's left for Darren to figure out.

Eh, this one was really boring to me, especially after Trials of Death! A lot of things annoyed me, but I did like the background into the politics, and I liked seeing another side or the vampires through Kurda. The Princes have to be the most annoying part of this. They were chosen to lead the whole vampire clan, and yet they'd all just jump into battle and not use their heads. And they need Darren, a young human basically, to actually make them think and use their ancient brains.

I love Darren's maturity and intelligence. He thinks of both sides of each situation, and his empathy is a massive asset! He's a relatable main character, he thinks with his head and isn't sassy, and it's such a nice change!

The Vampire Prince, the sixth book in the Darren Shan series, might be my favorite.
I love the way this book is quick paced and so thrilling!

This book was another great edition to the Cirque du Freak series. Though the plot and setting have gravitated really far from the original storyline, I still find this series to be just as interesting and well written. The characters have all changed for the better and I'm curious to see what the next story arc in this series will be about.

This book in particular has a very well developed morally gray character and I applaud the author for creating this character. Similar to Snape in the Harry Potter series, I find myself both despising and loving the character at the same time. I'm opting not to say which character it is in my review so that if anyone reading my review chooses to read this series, they will be shocked by which character I'm talking about.

My only complaint about this book is that one of the five female characters was killed off and it was the only strong female character that was killed off. This book lacks females and especially admirable ones, so having the only powerful one being killed of is both disappointing and wrong.

Another part of Darren's saga! It picks up exactly where the last left off, with Darren escaping through the tunnels of vampire mountain. The first few chapters are intense, with Darren basically water-sliding down the rapids inside the mountain. It slows down quite a bit, and it also includes a lot of vampire politics, which can be a little boring at times.

The biggest disappointment  is Gavner and Arra being confirmed dead. There were a lot of interesting characters introduced in this arc of the series, and many of them are no longer with us. Arra, Gavner, and Kurda.

I can also really understand both sides of the Kurda and vampaneze debate. Kurda just wanted to stop an impending war before it started. But it was also betraying the vampires.

Definitely ready for the next in the series

THIS BOOK DOES NOT inch the plot by much

Not that I really minded. After the intensity of the last few books, it was nice to see Darren taking time to smell the roses.

We last left Darren (character, not writer) plunging into a raging river - facing near-death (yet again!) as his body is thrown against the rocks and he nearly drowns. He's rescued by a pack of wolves - the same ones he ran into a couple of books ago - and is helped by them to get back to Vampire mountain.

I was a little annoyed by the way Darren Shan (author) treated the wolves - and that they become essential to the plot point - only for them to drop off the face of the earth. Lots of bonding and emotional build...that builds to ultimately nothing. I've noticed this is becoming a pattern.

It almost feels like Darren Shan (writer) didn't know what to do with them (as with the other characters) once they fulfilled their role.

Only one death swings back around to make sense at a latter date (which if you've read the series before - did any else catch it before the big reveal? I remember my mouth dropping when I read that bit in middle school!)

Ralph Lister read this one - rather well done!
