I'm sad to say that this book bored me. I would give Hound of the Baskervilles a 3/5. It was a good solid mystery story. Valley of Fear started off similarly, but lost me in its second half. I found the whole section in America tedious. It took me about a month to finish the last few pages.

ACD writes smoothly. They're is no doubt about it. I also get a good sense of what the characters are like. Even so, there is something lacking. I feel no suspense in these books... Maybe that's because they're recreated as TV shows... I'm not sure, but whatever it is, it makes me bored. So, although the first story was solid and parts of the second story were good, I was so annoyed with the second half of V of F that it ruined everything, hence the two stars.

The Hound of the Baskervilles - simply a classic.
The Valley of Fear - a surprisingly dark and gritty, but nonetheless, beautiful little gem.

Two stories in one book about the most famous of all detectives. The first of course, being the most well known Holmes story of them all with brilliant suspense throughout. However, it was the second story that was most gripping, which is a story within a story. Fabulous twist at the end and it really demonstrates what a skilled writer Sir Arthur was. Everybody should read at least one Sherlock Holmes story.

Two stories that are quite different from the stories in the collection.

Each is a long format novella 10x the size of previous short stories. Watson is investigating alone through half of The Hound. A 100-page long prequel to the murder investigation in the Valley of Fear, uncovering the background of the main characters of the case and revealing the motive. This last part is entirely devoid of Sherlock, that although it brings freshness to the series, it was the least interesting part up until the end. Great writing, but only four stars for me due to the extended background story from the 1870s, which started to become a drag to read through.

Two of the best Holmes stories ever written... The Hound of the Baskervilles is an eerie adventure with a typical detective-story pace and structure; and a climax scene I WOULD NOT recommend reading at 2 a.m (from personal experience).
The Valley of Fear, on the other hand, has two parts- solving the case and then unfolding of its background. The second part might seem somewhat slow and dragged out in the beginning; especially since it's a direct jump from solving of the case- but trust me, the end is worth it all. I repeat, the last three pages of the book are worth it all.

Indeed the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are amazing in their details and ideas whom not all might imagine to write themselves. The Hound of Baskervilles is one of the greatest stories combining supernatural in the story. Valley of Fear pur a pinch of the first Sherlock Holmes books with the 2 stories, the last presenting the past and a backstory to the first.

Excellent stuff. Surely no one needs me to tell them Sherlock Holmes is great?

This was one of the best books in the series, as the second part of the book (The Valley of Fear) described the events leading up to what had happened in the Hound of the Baskervilles. The genre for this type of book is adventure and a little bit of action because of Sherlock’s decisions to find out the real culprit behind all of the cases. This was a very interesting book and is recommended for those who are yearning to go on an adventure.

This is the fourth book in the series as well and it has a very interesting ending, making us understand why the Hound of the Baskervilles case had happened. The Sherlock Holmes Collection 6 Books Box Set By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (His Last Bow, The Memories of Sherlock Holmes, A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of The Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
