Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, widely known simply as Scott Fitzgerald, was an American novelist, essayist, and short story writer. He is best known for his novels depicting the flamboyance and excess of the Jazz Age, a term he popularized in his short story collection Tales of the Jazz Age. During his lifetime, he published four novels, four story collections, and 164 short stories. Although he achieved temporary popular success and fortune in the 1920s, Fitzgerald received critical acclaim only after his death and is now widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century.
Born into a middle-class family in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Fitzgerald was raised primarily in New York state. He attended Princeton University where he befriended future literary critic Edmund Wilson. Owing to a failed romantic relationship with Chicago socialite Ginevra King, he dropped out in 1917 to join the United States Army during World War I. While stationed in Alabama, he met Zelda Sayre, a Southern debutante who belonged to Montgomery's exclusive country-club set. Although she initially rejected Fitzgerald's marriage proposal due to his lack of financial prospects, Zelda agreed to marry him after he published the commercially successful This Side of Paradise (1920). The novel became a cultural sensation and cemented his reputation as one of the eminent writers of the decade.
His second novel, The Beautiful and Damned (1922), propelled him further into the cultural elite. To maintain his affluent lifestyle, he wrote numerous stories for popular magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's Weekly, and Esquire. During this period, Fitzgerald frequented Europe, where he befriended modernist writers and artists of the "Lost Generation" expatriate community, including Ernest Hemingway. His third novel, The Great Gatsby (1925), received generally favorable reviews but was a commercial failure, selling fewer than 23,000 copies in its first year. Despite its lackluster debut, The Great Gatsby is now hailed by some literary critics as the "Great American Novel". Following the deterioration of his wife's mental health and her placement in a mental institute for schizophrenia, Fitzgerald completed his final novel, Tender Is the Night (1934).
Struggling financially because of the declining popularity of his works during the Great Depression, Fitzgerald moved to Hollywood, where he embarked upon an unsuccessful career as a screenwriter. While living in Hollywood, he cohabited with columnist Sheilah Graham, his final companion before his death. After a long struggle with alcoholism, he attained sobriety only to die of a heart attack in 1940, at 44. His friend Edmund Wilson edited and published an unfinished fifth novel, The Last Tycoon (1941), after Fitzgerald's death. In 1993, a new edition was published as The Love of the Last Tycoon, edited by Matthew J. Bruccoli.

Докато го четях, отвъд основните теми, споменавани навсякъде – разложителната сила на многото пари, за които не е работено, разпалването и бавното загасване на любовта, скиторенето на американците из “тяхната” Европа, която са покорили – и открили – по време на Първата световна война, и други, си мислех колко е интересно това, че за Фицджералд политическият фон не съществува: Сталин например се споменава веднъж с иронична забележка, че доста оправна жена, омъжила се за раджа, би съблазнила диктатора, ако Европа паднеше под съветския ботуш.

Suave es la noche, es un intento de encapsular el savoir-faire a la americana , o de inferir a partir de una muestra representativa toda una época.

Un puñado de personas en su mayoría norteamericanos, recorren Francia, Italia, etc queriendo romper los límites mediante un uso irracional de recursos y tiempo para dilapidarlos sin decoro, una incesante rueda de comer, bailar, haraganear, beber, como perfeccionando un arte.

Esta pandilla es lidereada por una pareja adorable Dick y Nicole en apariencia los anfitriones perfectos, bellos, ricos y con esa chispa de hospitalidad que hace sentir a todos cómodos y parte de una familia.

Pero aunque al principio todo es felicidad, el tiempo empieza a erosionar a esta pareja y como si fueran fichas de domino se van derrumbando los soportes de esta época hasta mostrar lo feo, lo triste, lo duro de la vida.

Aunque la narración inicia lenta y superficial, conforme avanzan los capítulos es verdad que toma ritmo y profundidad, y bajo escenas aparentemente absurdas vamos visualizando el talante de los protagonistas, al creerse seres especiales.

En una plática entre copas recuerdan cuando uno del grupo tuvo la idea de agarrar a un camarero para partirlo a la mitad y descubrir que esconden en su interior los camareros, obviamente no lo permitieron pero cada que lo cuentan, se ríen a carcajadas. Es decir para ellos los camareros son iguales en todo el mundo, entidades creados para servirlos y nada más.

En la historia están volcados de manera directa y a veces velada muchos circunstancias de vida del propio escritor y su esposa, la infidelidad, el alcoholismo, enfermedades mentales, problemas monetarios.

Aunque el libro se va acomodando para dar paso a una historia bien estructurada, aunque logra enviar un mensaje de que los mejores años pasan rápido, no logré quedar totalmente satisfecha con la lectura, existe mucho foco al protagonista Dick, y poco de Nicole, que para mí es la columna de toda la novela, pero siempre es presentada por Dick, como si a él pertenecieran su personalidad, pensamientos y comportamiento, de tal suerte que el filtra que podemos saber de ella o no, las veces que logra escapar de esta censura sus pensamientos son profundos y excepcionales, como muestra:

“No te voy a pedir que me quieras siempre como ahora, pero sí te pido que lo recuerdes. Pase lo que pase, siempre quedará en mí algo de lo que soy esta noche.”

Το αμερικάνικο τζετ σετ της δεκαετίας του ’20, αυτό των καλών τρόπων, του φαίνεσθαι και του κομ ιλ φο, το πρωτοκλασάτο όνειρο των πλούσιων Αμερικανών που ψάχνουν αδηφάγα για νέες απολαύσεις τσαλακώνεται μέσα από την τρυφερή και δελεαστικά φωταγωγημένη νύχτα της Κυανής Ακτής, Βαβυλώνας των χάι διασκεδάσεων.

Ο κάθε χαρακτήρας ενσαρκώνει κάτι, συμβολίζει κάτι. Ο Φιτζέραλντ έχει σίγουρα ταλέντο: μας επιβιβάζει στο όχημα των ψευδαισθήσεων της εποχής του, μεθυστικά, ποιητικά σχεδόν, και μας αφήνει να παρασυρθούμε στην πλάνη της γοητείας και «παντοδυναμίας» του Ντικ Ντίβερ και την σταδιακή αποδυνάμωσή τους. Το προστατευτικό κουκούλι που έχει υφάνει γύρω από τη γυναίκα του Νικόλ, πρώην σχιζοφρενούς σε μεταβατικό στάδιο ολοκληρωτικής ίασης, αποδυναμώνεται σταδιακά και καταρρέει. Μέσα από αυτή τη διαδρομή, την τόσο βαθιά σκιαγραφημένη από διάφορες οπτικές γωνίες, τσακιζόμαστε και εμείς οι ίδιοι στα βράχια των δικών μας ψευδαισθήσεων∙ η ουτοπία είναι εξ αρχής καταδικασμένη στην αποκαθήλωση.

Avevo provato a cominciare questo libro durante l'ultimo anno di liceo, l'ho concluso cinque anni dopo, poiché mi è ritornato in mente più volte durante tutto l'arco del 2022.
Mi è piaciuto immensamente, sia nelle descrizioni che per l'andamento dei personaggi, ho adorato questo testo molto di più del suo romanzo più famoso.
Ho visto molte recensioni negative, soprattutto rispetto alla struttura del romanzo e per il suo andamento poco sincronico: per me il fatto che a ogni capitolo si cambiasse registro ha affascinato tantissimo, soprattutto la seconda parte riesce a porre uno spartiacque enorme, in grado di farti comprendere quanto davvero non sia tutto oro ciò che luccica, mentre nel primo veniamo rapiti dal mondo che circonda costantemente Rosemary, dal suo modo naif di vederlo e di rimanerne ammaliata, che poi certamente matura e cambia.
Leggere la postfazione è stato cruciale per comprendere ancora di più perché mi fosse piaciuto così tanto questo romanzo, sapere quanto riprenda la vita dell'autore e quanto siano personali le vicende ha portato l'amore a dismisura.

"Tender is the Night" is an interesting dinner guest that arrives half-drunk seems amusing but shallow, but then, as the night wears on, reveals itself as something deep, thoughtful, and yes, even tender.

It's the story of one couple -- Dick and Nicole Diver; a charismatic American family living in France. They are charming, they are exceptional, they are fun, and of course, they are also flawed...and their tale is tragic. In short, this book is a classic and a joy to read.

I'm always cautious about commenting on male writers writing female characters, especially those with mental disorders. But Nicole seems sympathetically and miraculously well-developed. Even though she is a kind of plague to the charismatic Dick Diver (I wonder what Freud would say about this character name), she also is a charming delight -- which makes Dick's situation all the more plausible and relatable. As the novel moves into its mature parts, we see that Dick himself is a kind of blight on Nicole. As Nicole gets better mentally and emotionally, Dick goes through a kind of dissipation.

The very period-ness of the book, post-WWI Europe, the Jazz age, the backdrop of a rising and confident America, also makes the book interesting. In the edition I read, there are numbered references you can look up in the back that explain all the period details. The book is very much a work of its time, and thus, it's also a fascinating window into that part of history. One of the things that stands out the most is spectacular wealth that the Divers enjoy in their pre-Great Depression era lives. This is a subject I think that should resonate with modern America readers!

The book was serialized (either in a newspaper or magazine, I forget), so the chapters are short, punchy, and something interesting happens in all of them. Since I read much of this on the bus to work, this structure of the book really worked for me.

At first, as I read the book, I took it as just another well-written period piece. But the more involved I became with the Dick and Nicole, the more I began to see this book not just as a good work of fiction, but as a great one. It's the tale of a complicated time and place where good things can easily go sour.

I would recommend this book to all lovers of great fiction! And, for this reason, I'm placing it on my all-time greats bookshelf.

I romanzi di Fitzgerald sono spirali di distruzione. Quando un personaggio cade a pezzi si addensa una nube di macerie finissime che ricopre il paesaggio circostante. Prendete in mano qualsiasi dei suoi libri, la polvere è la vera protagonista. E così nel dolorosissimo "Tenera è la notte". Il rapporto di Dick e Nicole non si spezza. Si dissolve. E nell'aria rimane quella polvere di sogno. Questo è quello che ti spezza il cuore: la cenere, costante memorandum di ciò che è stato, di ciò che è finito ma di cui non puoi liberarti. Come granelli di sabbia, Nicole si era inserita nelle più inacessibili pieghe del suo animo. Impossibile liberarsene. La lotta ferina ingaggiata dai due a suon di recriminazioni, sorrisi sarcastici, risate isteriche, sguardi vacui, li ha ridotti a brandelli. Il contrasto penoso tra sanità e follia, una doppia serpe che avviluppa la loro relazione, fino a soffocarli. Si riaffaccia prepotentemente la questione meschina del denaro. Nicole, bella e sfacciatamente ricca. Un doppio incantesimo, difficile da spezzare per Dick, sempre distante (come medico) e subordinato (di estrazione sociale irrimediabilmente inferiore). Nonostante tutto, percepisci il loro amore spettrale. Una catena che li tiene legati. Lui l'ha salvata. Lei gli ha regalato sprazzi di "felicità incoerente". Tenera è la notte. L'oscurità che li avvolge è dolce. "Davanti a noi, chilometri di notte".
Il romanzo a cui Fitzgerald ha lavorato nove anni, il suo lavoro più ambizioso, più maturo. Ricco di riferimenti autobiografici, situazioni topiche della sua letteratura (incidenti in macchina, narratori esterni ingenui, confronti tra gli amanti, uno romantico, l'altro rozzo), riferimenti autoreferenziali che richiameranno più di un deja-vu alla mente del lettore affezionato. Proprio per questo gli ho preferito Gatsby. Struttura più coesa, meno limacciosa. In più punti, l'angoscia e l'estrema dilatazione temporale dell'agonia dei personaggi ti procura quel pruriginoso fastidio che ti spinge ad allontanarti dal romanzo. Tuttavia sono stati solo dei momenti trascurabili: la maturazione artistica dello scrittore è evidente, lo stile impareggiabile. Il solito magnifico Fitzgerald.
"Come un'indifferenza costantemente alimentata o lasciata a se stessa si trasforma in un vuoto, così lui aveva imparato a essere vuoto di Nicole, comportandosi con lei con negazione e distacco sentimentale. Si parla di cicatrici guarite, una vaga similitudine tratta dalla patologia della pelle, ma nella realtà non esiste una cosa simile. Esistono ferite aperte, a volte piccole come una puntura di spillo, ma sono pur sempre ferite. I segni della sofferenza possono essere paragonati al massimo alla perdita di un dito o di un occhio; potremmo non perderli mai, nemmeno per un minuto all'anno, ma se capitasse non ci sarebbe più nulla da fare"

✨✨ I didn’t want to read it after the actress shows up because of course I knew there was going to be an affair. Everyone knows at least that much about the novel. I liked it the way it was before Rosemary arrived in France - Dick and a perfectly lovely Nicole having a great relationship and getting along just fine. It was upbeat and beautiful. And then Dick fell for Rosemary and everything fell apart. Nicole will marry again after the smoke and ashes but Dick won’t and it left me feeling sad and flat. I’m told this was based on Scott Fitzgerald’s own smashed relationship which made it all even sadder.

✨ Scott’s writing is exquisite, it really is a feast to sit down at his writing table and get pulled into his stories.
