A polyphonic grouping mostly comprised of immigrants, all trying to find their way in a city that sells them something that doesn’t exist. Moving from something that feels like cinematic plays—or tracking shots—to meat of narratives with each chapter, this 1925 text feels really contemporary sometimes, especially when weaving between perspectives and contextualizing things very cinematically and emotionally.

It doesn’t escape being antiquated though. Lots of characters feel like caricatures. They’re openly racist. I doubt any one character arc will be surprising. Oh, and they ride carriages sometimes, dodging new-fangled cars. The plotting is intricate and comes together nicely to form the themes. But I doubt I’ll even remember a character name in a day or two. I never once felt attached. We are far more than arms length.

More than most this could be a 4 on a day when I’m thinking Fondly about it. Because it does feature great writing and it feels like it might have impacted literature to the degree of perhaps even forging these quintessential stories and this type of fiction. There’s some progressive ideas and the intent of it is explicit enough that the antiquated features are undeniably blind spots. There’s some queer characters and an abortion story, which feels ahead of it’s time, but also of it’s time.

Το μυθιστόρημα γράφεται το 1925 αλλά είναι διαχρονικό εφόσον διαχρονικές είναι οι καταστάσεις που περιγράφει, και όχι μόνο για την Αμερική ή τη Νέα Υόρκη αλλά και για όλο το κόσμο πλέον, που χωρίζει τις χώρες και τους πολίτες σε κατηγορίες και απομακρύνει από την ουσία, θυσιάζοντας κυριολεκτικά τα πάντα στο βωμό του χρήματος.
Ένα χρονικό της μεγάλης πόλης, όπως σπάνια παρουσιάζεται. Ένα χρονικό του κόσμου μας, όπως δεν θελουμε να τον βλέπουμε αλλά είναι εκεί.

Very clever. I get what he's doing. Very clever. But rubbish to read. Yay modernism. It gave birth to some of the most technically brilliant unreadable tosh ever written.

John Dos Passos contemporáneo y amigo de Heminghway, entre otros, ha dejado este libro al mundo que se considera un clásico de la literatura del siglo XX, ya que en él se describen muchos pasajes de la vida cotidiana de todo tipo de personajes que poblaron el Nueva York de aquellos tiempos (años 20 del siglo XX) con sus características particulares cada uno, atendiendo a su condición social, a su cultura y a su procedencia El autor describe con maestría y de forma amena las ilusiones, fantasías y decepciones de los habitantes de la Gran Manzana. La gran Urbe que para muchos significa un sueño el poder visitarla. Un clásico invaluable para los que adoran Nueva York.

Romanas apie XX a. pradžios Niujorko žmonių gyvenimus. Siužetas nelinijinis, fragmentiškas, bet įvairių visuomenės sluoksnių žmonių kasdienybės įvykiai aprašyti intriguojančiai akcentuojant potyrius, provokuojančias emocijas.

Το Manhattan Transfer διαβάζεται σαν ένας πειραματισμός της jazz. Σαν μια πολυπρόσωπη ταινία του Ρόμπερτ Άλτμαν. Σαν τη συμφωνία μιας μεγαλούπολης. Δεν έχει πρωταγωνιστές. Πρωταγωνιστεί η ίδια η πόλη. Μια πόλη που διέπεται από τη δική της αναρχική νομοτέλεια, ένας ζωντανός οργανισμός, όπου κάθε κύτταρο του, οι ήρωες του βιβλίου, προσπαθούν να κατακτήσουν τα όνειρά τους και την ευτυχία μέσα σε ένα καθεστώς ελεύθερης αγοράς με τους δικούς του νόμους. Γι' αυτό και τα όνειρα γκρεμίζονται ή πραγματοποιούνται χωρίς (φαινομενικά) λογική αλληλουχία. Γι' αυτό οι χαρακτήρες εμφανίζονται κι εξαφανίζονται από την αφήγηση, αποσπώντας λίγη ή πολλή από την προσοχή του αναγνώστη. Η τεχνική του Ντος Πάσος, εμπνευσμένη από τα jump cuts, το κολάζ και τις τεχνικές του κινηματογράφου που εκείνη την εποχή δημιουργούσε τη δική του γλώσσα, είναι επιτηδευμένα χαοτική, αλλά απόλυτα ελεγχόμενη. Δεν αναζητά τη συναισθηματική ταύτιση, τη λύτρωση, τη δικαίωση. Εστιάζει σε κάποιους ήρωες και μετά τους παρατάει, τους ξαναπιάνει μετά από πολλές σελίδες και τους αφήνει και πάλι μετέωρους. Και το τελικό αποτέλεσμα κερδίζει το θαυμασμό, ως ένα χαρακτηριστικό δείγμα του μοντερνισμού των αρχών του προηγούμενου αιώνα, και την αίσθηση ότι απομένεις στο κέντρο μιας μεγαλούπολης σε ώρα αιχμής. it's a masterpiece. seriously. an important book. top shelf material. read this, please. dos passos deserves resurrection.
i don't know how he sustains such gripping imagery over the course of the novel. just look at his descriptions of ellie, in any situation, or his love notes to tall buildings. it's gorgeous.

This book was published in 1925 but the audible version I listen to did not come out until 2019. I am in a bit of a John Dos Passos era in my reading. I read someplace that this is considered by some to be his best novel. Before this I have read his USA trilogy. I think I have given three stars to everything which means I guess that I have not been as impressed by him as I thought I might be.

I continue to wonder what people made of thought about his books if they had read them right when they were first published rather than going on 100 years later. They may possibly have been more cutting edge at the time they were written.

Usually I particularly enjoy books that include descriptions of New York City. For many years I wanted to live in New York City and did live for about 10 years on Long Island. I never managed to get to live in NYC. This book begins by describing Life there as the epitome of success but ends up describing the failure of so many people. Many people trying unsuccessfully for riches. And also people who find it and then lose it.

This book focuses on the years just before and just after World War I. It possibly skips the war years because those are covered so thoroughly in the USA trilogy. Lots of drinking and bumming. Some looks at alternative lifestyles without drawing many conclusions.

The writing is good in a somewhat stream of consciousness style. But my basic conclusion about this author is that he has lost something as a result of the passage of time and history. That he has become something of a steady three-star author rather than higher. I am disappointed since I think I have several more of his books in my future.

John Dos Passos a ete considere pendant longtemps un des plus important ecrivains des Etats-Unis des annees vingt et trente. Depuis une vingtaine d'annees il se glisse dans l'oubli. Il merite possiblement un meilleur sort. Manhattan Transfer est un ouvrage assez bien reussi ou Dos Passos fait des essais avec maintes formes nouveaux: le collage, le flux de conscience, etc.

Le parcours personnelle de Dos Passos n'est pas sans interet. Il etait bien branche dans les milieux litteraires de son époque. Pendant quelques annees il était tres proche avec Ernest Hemingway.

Dos Passos était d'abord communiste et fait un cours de formation en l'U.R.S.S. dans les annees vingt. Son experience en Espagne ou il a ete horrifie par les pratiques meurtrieres des communistes l'a completement transformé. Il a fini sa vie comme un miltant de la droite.
