Actual rating: 3 1/2 stars. It was kinda cheesy, but I liked this one better than the last. Hoole was adorable when he was little and there was also a pretty epic ending. Still, the ones about Coryn are my favorites.
Ich bin immernoch kein Fan der alten Legenden. Kein Zusammenhang zur originalen Geschichte und abgesehen davon, hätte das was in drei Büchern steht auch in einem Buch zusammengefasst werden können.
The coming of hoole picks up directly after the prior book, however, unlike the prior book, it immediately abandons the strange awkward storytelling narration that it held on to. I'm pleased that it did this, because these short books are not well adapted to handling a character who is acting out his part in the story as well as being tasked with the burden of a narrator at the same time. That choice freed this book to build a much better plot and filled it with a host of characters that all had a hand in not only the story's development but their own small character arcs. This book kept me engaged and I was very pleased with how it unfolded. Certainly one of the best in the series thus far.
Book 10 and 11 are a bit weaker than the rest, in my opinion. I preferred Grank's first-person perspective in book 9 for this arc. It really added to the feeling that The First Collier was a legend within the main series. These two books are written in the third person, however, so we get perspectives from other characters the supposed author, Theo, would have had no way of knowing. The characters in these books also feel weaker in comparison to the cast of characters from the previous books.
I would still recommend books 10 and 11 if you love the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series. They provide us with an insight into why things are the way they are in the main books.
My favorite part was when Hoole became the king, and created a kingdom in the south, called Ga'Hoole. My least favortie part was hwen Queen Siv died. I like all the parts where the owls were with the wolves in Beyond the Beyond. I also liked how this book told the origins of the great Ga'Hoole tree, and how it got its name. One thing I don't understand is why there are so many apostrophes in the names of evenrything in the N'yrthghar.
