Mindy Newell has planted the seeds for an interesting origin story, but failed to water them. The poor execution is backed up by mediocre art that gives zero aesthetic to the comic book.

It's not as innovative as some of the comics from this era, and the story is somewhat predictable, but the story is interesting nonetheless, the art is good, and the characters are interesting enough. It really functions as Catwoman: Year One, telling her modern origin story, and re-telling the Catwoman scenes from Batman: Year One from her perspective. It's pretty solid. I'd recommend it to any Catwoman or Batman fan.

This story takes place concurrently with Batman: Year One but is not on the same level story-wise and art-wise. It actually uses entire pages and panels from Year One to expound on Selina's story during those same events. I felt the story was convoluted and jumped around a bit too much; it didn't have a nice flow to it. Part of the problem is that the art style and characters are vastly different from Year One, so by inserting those exact panels instead of having this artist redraw them in their own style, it's just jarring. The character models for Selina in particular are VASTLY different, she's practically unrecognizable as being the same character. The story does add a little to her origin as the prostitute with a heart of gold (and a love of it, too), but not so much that I would list this as an essential Catwoman title.

I was pretty disappointed with this comic. There was a really strong start, but then as the story progressed, it started to sputter and then ended with no real conclusion. The origin story, the storyline and themes were good ideas, but the writing and the art didn't properly convey those ideas. I might consider buying the first issue for my personal library, though.
