Paul Auster'in okuduğum en başarısız kitabı diyebilirim. Rastlantı temasını temel alarak , yazarın yaşadığı şehirler ve tanıdığı insanlar çerçevesinde yazdığı öykücükler edebi bir eser tadı vermiyor; hatta yer yer yakın dostları hakkında dedikodu yapıyormuş hissine kapıldığım anlar oldu. Kitabın tek olumlu tarafı, öykü yazmanın ne kadar büyük bir ustalık gerektirdiğini bir kez daha idrak ettirmesi oldu. Kısa Öykünün Büyük Ustaları gibi bir çalışma varken zamanımı bu kitapla kaybettiğim için üzgünüm.

Leer a Auster siempre es un placer.

יש משהו נורא עיתונאי בספר הזה, לא העיתונאות המעונבת והרצינית של היום, אלא עיתונאות משוחררת כזאת, שמחפשת לספר במקום להדריך אותנו. מעין משהו שאפשר היה לקרוא באיזה טור של שלמה ארצי בשבת או בניו יורקר בימי ראשון פעם.

באופן מאוד משונה ומפתיע אני חי בעולם הזה כבר שנתיים.
איכשהו שיצא שהתגלגלתי לכתיבה עיתונאית שכזאת, שמנסה לתפוס את המקרים היפים והמשונים של הקיום, אם זה הסחלב בחדר אוכל או העבודה בשק"ם או איזה טיול או משחק פינג פונג עם בכיר שנייה אחרי שיצאתי מהמעלית.

When you're a man as good-looking, beloved by the French, and utterly meta as Paul Auster, things happen to you. Exciting things. Surprising things. Coicidental and virtually impossible things. And if things aren't happening to you, then by golly, they are happening to someone you know. And so what are you to do, Paul Auster, but to write a book detailing the minute ways in which life (specifically yours) truly means something.

Because, Dear Reader, everything is connected.

Auster believes in a type of fate, it seems, a universal undercurrent that prompts and pushes almost every moment of our lives. Luckily, this predilection never seems too fanatical, never truly takes on the spectre of religious predestination that seems to be playing on the sidelines. Because when you get down to it, the fact that Paul Auster thinks that one day he lost a dime in Brooklyn and then later that day found "the very same dime" in front of Yankee Stadium is pretty endearing.

The problem is that after awhile, these 'amazing' events seem remarkably mundane. I mean, what's so remarkable about coincidences that happen all the time? This is only exaggerated by his writing style--quick, to the point, and bereft of detail. Everything happens for a reason, I guess, but perhaps the reason isn't as moving and complex as one might hope.

And anyway, Paul, it probably wasn't the same dime.

Un conjunto de anécdotas regidas por el azar, que, al final, es el motor principal de la literatura de Auster. Sin duda muy interesantes algunas divertidas, otras melancólicas. Me ha motivado a leer mucho más del autor que refleja en este libro su sencillez y profunda sinceridad.

Auster writes with such a compelling voice. His accounts of strange coincidences and events that have taken place in his life or people he knows lives, is extremely exciting and innovative. Every story in this collection is a true story, yet the way Auster writes them, it makes the reader question if things so outlandish could actually happen. Fascinating read. 4.5 stars

And here is the little red notebook the author tells us in the New York Trilogy. First, Paul Auster records special events that happened to him. Then, he explains how he came up with the idea of "The City of Glass".

Paul Auster es un gran hijo de puta. Escribe historias que tu o yo podriamos haber escrito. Pero que no. Son historias sorprendentes, de coincidencias extraordinarias. Pero Auster las hace perfectamente creibles. Y ahi esta parte de su genio. Con un lenguaje breve, sin pompa, nos lleva directo a las historias. El titulo viene, probablemente, del hecho de que Auster entiende que tal vez las historias puedan parecer falsas, pero no lo son (claro, queda la duda de cual es el caso). Como quien cuenta hechos curiosos de su vida (la de Auster), nos lleva de la mano a historias que se hacen verdaderas. Punto adicional del libro: su brevedad. Aunque algunas de las historias tienen algo de relacion, se pueden leer independientemente las unas de las otras.

Un libro muy corto y ágil que reúne relatos breves y supuestamente reales que el escritor vivió o escuchó de primera mano. La idea que los une a todos es la coincidencia, pero de esas que parecen sumamente improbables e increíbles.

This incredible little book is a collection of almost unbelievable, true "happenstances" that one of my favorite authors compiled. Each vignette, only a few pages, is a story with amazing outcomes, neatly tied up into feel-good endings. I still question the veracity of the whole thing but it is a quick read, wholly satisfying and full of humanity that makes me happy and makes me close my eyes with a smile at each ending.
