মানুষ ক্যান বই পড়ে তার দুইটা কারণ বার্ট্রান্ড রাসেল সাহেব বইলা গেছিলেন; এক হইলো, জাস্ট মনের আনন্দের লিগা, আর দুই, লোকেরে জানান দেওনের লিগা। রাসেল সাহেবের বলার ধরণে বুঝন যায়, তাঁর আসল উদ্দেশ্য দুই নাম্বার ক্যাটাগরির লোকজনেরে হাইলাইট করা। বই পড়ার ব্যাপারটা অনেকটা দাঁত মাজনের মতো; সবাই জানে, বোঝে, কাজটা করা দরকার, কিন্তু কম লোকেই তা করে। বই জিনিষটা জ্ঞানের আধার, বই পড়লে অনেক রকম বিষয় জানন যায়, সমাজে বই পড়নেওয়ালাগো একটা ভালো চোখে দেখনের চল আছে…এইসব মিলায়া ‘আমি বই পড়ি’ এই কথাটা জনসমাজে প্রচারের একটা দাম আছে। সিনেমার নায়িকা কিংবা রাজনীতিবিদগোরে ইন্টারভিউতে যদি জিগানো হয় আপনের প্রিয় ব্যক্তিত্ব ক্যাডা, তারা চোউখ বন কইরা জবাব দেন, “সর্বকালের শ্রেষ্ঠ মানব হযরত মুহম্মদ (সাঃ)”। নবী মুহম্মদ মানুষ হিসাবে আইডল হওনের কতটা যোগ্য আদৌ, সেইটা ভিন্ন আলোচনা; কিন্তু, সমাজের একটা বড় অংশ যেহেতু চোউখ বন্ধ কইরা তারে ওস্তাদ মাইনা নিছে, তাই জনপ্রিয়তা বেইচা যাগো প্যাট চালাইতে হয়, তাগোরেও উপরে উপরে জনগণের ওস্তাদের সাগরেদ হইতে হয়। তার নিজের ধর্ম বা কর্ম (আপাতদৃষ্টিতে) ওস্তাদের ধর্ম আর কর্মের রাস্তা থিকা যতোই দূরে থাউক, লোক দেখানো ঐ পিরিতডা না দেহাইলে তাগোর রুজি বন হয়া যায়। সিনেমার নায়িকা বা রাজনীতিবিদগো কাছে নবী মুহম্মদ যা, সাধারণ লোকেগো কাছে বই হইলো তাই। দুই কিছিমের লোকই চাইরপাশের মানুষজনের কাছে নবী নাইলে বই বেইচা নিজের কদর বাড়ায়।

বাঙলাদেশে জ্ঞানের চর্চা হয়না, এই কথা সবাই জানে। এইখানে মানুষ স্কুল-কলেজ-ইউনিভার্সিটিতে পইড়া শিক্ষিত হয় প্যাট চালানির লিগা, বই পড়নের কিংবা বিদ্যাসাগর হওনের লিগা না। আমাগো দ্যাশের লাইব্রেরীগুলাতে ভিড় জমায় বিসিএস পরীক্ষার্থীরা। এইখানে অশিক্ষিত রিকশাওয়ালা আর পিএইচডিওয়ালা একই কায়দায় বউ পিটায়, রাস্তায় ছ্যাপ ফ্যালে, ঘুষ খায়, চুরি করে, মাইরপিট করে। দুই কিছিমের মানুষের আচার-ব্যবহারে শিক্ষার আদৌ কোন ভূমিকা আছে কিনা তা বুঝন যায় না। পড়ার বইয়ের বাইরে যেহেতু আর কিছু কেউ পড়েনা, বই পড়ার বিষয়টা এইজন্য এই দ্যাশে মিথ। এই মিথটারে পুঞ্জি কইরা যেইসব লোক নিজেগোরে পাঠক পরিচয়ে দশজনের কাছে ব্যাচেন, তাগোর সেবায় নতুন নতুন ঢঙয়ের বইয়ের দোকান খোলা হয়। এইসব জায়গায় গেলে বুঝন যায় না এই দোকান কি বইয়ের নাকি দামী চা-কফি-বিস্কুটের? যার যহন ফেইসবুকের প্রফাইলের ছবি চেইঞ্জ করার সময় আহে, সে তখনই এইসব বইয়ের দোকানে নয়া শার্ট-পাঞ্জাবী কিংবা শাড়ী পিন্দা বইয়ের তাকে হেলান দিয়া দামী ক্যামেরা দিয়া ছবি তুইলা ক্যাপশন দেয়, ‘বইয়ের জগতে কয়েক ঘন্টার জন্য হারিয়ে গিয়েছিলাম’। কারো কারো ছবির ক্যাপশন দেইখা এইটাও মনে হয় ইনারা বইয়ের দোকানে ঘুরাফিরা, ডেইট শ্যাষ কইরা বাড়ি ফিরনের টাইমে হাত বাড়ায়া সবচায়া কাছের যেই বইটা পান, তার র‍্যান্ডম একটা পাতার ছবি তুইলা আনেন; নিজের ছবিডা আপ্লোড করনের টাইমে ওই র‍্যান্ডম পাতার থিকা দুই চাইরটা র‍্যান্ডম কথাও তুইলা দেন। এই কিছিমের পাঠকের লিগা আদর্শ বই ‘আলকেমিস্ট’ আর এই ‘সিদ্ধার্থ’। বার্ট্রান্ড রাসেল বই পড়নের দুই নাম্বার কারণডা এনাগোরে দেইখাই বাইর করছেন। ফিলোসফি বিষয়ডারে দাঁড় করানোর লিগা বহু মানুষ বহু মাথা ঘামাইছে, রক্ত দিছে, আগুনে পুইড়া, মাইর খায়া শ্যাষ হয়া গেছে। তারা যেইসব কিতাব লেইখা গেছে বা যা বইলা গেছে তা এই দুই নাম্বার কিছিমের লোকেরা পড়তে বা ধরতে পারেননা। এনারা এই ‘সিদ্ধার্থ’ বা ‘আলকেমিস্ট’ পইড়া দুধের স্বাদ গরম পানি দিয়া মিটান আর বলেন ‘আমার আগ্রহ ফিলোসফিক্যাল বইতে’, যদিও টেকনিক্যালি, ‘সিদ্ধার্থ’-এর পাঠক ‘আলকেমিস্ট’-এর পাঠকের চায়া নিজেরে একটু সেয়ানা আর তুলনামূলক বেশী শিক্ষিত ভাবেন। 'সিদ্ধার্থ' পড়নেওয়ালাগো নিয়া কথা বলছি, এই বইয়ের ভিতরের মাল-মশলা নিয়া আমি কোন কথা খরচ করি নাই। এই অপ্রিয় নোংরা কাজটা আরেকজন খুব অল্প কথায় অত্যন্ত সুন্দর কইরা কইরা দিছেন। আপনের ইচ্ছা হইলে এইখান থিকা ঘুইরা পইড়া আসতে পারেন।

সবাইরেই সব বই পড়তে হইবো এমুন কোন কথা নাই। সিদ্ধার্থ বা আলকেমিস্ট পইড়া ফিলসফির বুদবুদে কেউ ভাসলে ভাসুক, তাতে কোন সমস্যা নাই। মুশকিল টা হয় যখন অতি-উৎসুক পাঠকেরা এই বইগুলারে আসমানী কিতাবের পর্যায়ে নিয়া যায়। সিদ্ধার্থ নিয়া ১৯৭২ সালে একটা সিনেমা হইছিলো; ভক্তরা সেই ছবি দেইখা খুব নাখোশ হইছেন, এই ছবিতে নাকি বইয়ের মূল দর্শন উইঠা আসে নাই। পাতায় পাতায় সেক্স সিনে ভর্তি ফাতরা এই বইডারে ডিরেক্টর সাব নিজে কত আর ঘইষা মাইজা মানুষ করা পারেন? ‘আলকেমিস্ট’/ ‘সিদ্ধার্থ’-এর পাঠক দুনিয়ায় বেশী, উনাগো লাইগা এইসব বইয়ের লেখকেরা কুটিপটি হন বই বেইচা, উনাগো লাইগা কফি-চা-বিস্কুটওয়ালা বইয়ের দোকান দিতে হয়, এইসবে ব্যাবসা বাড়ে, টেগার হাতবদল বেশী হয়…এর সবই বুঝি। আমি নিজে ক্যাপিটালিস্ট সিস্টেমের নুন খাই, এই সিস্টেমের বদনাম করা আমার জন্য কঠিন। কিন্তু, আপনে ব্যাবসা করবেন ক্যাপিটালিস্ট সিস্টেমে, আর শিল্প-সাহিত্যের বেলায় আপনের রুচি হইবো কমিউনিস্টগো মতো, তাইলে ক্যাম্নে কি? 'সিদ্ধার্থ' কিছিমের বইগুলান চা-কফি বেচা বইয়ের দোকানে 'ফিলসফি', 'সেলফ-হেল্প', 'সেলফ-ডিভেলপমেন্ট', 'ইন্সপায়ারিং' এইসব ষ্টিকার মারা বইয়ের তাকে সাজায়া রাখা হয়। পড়নের লিগা এইসব বই কেউ কেনে না, কেনে ছবি তুইলা ইন্সটাগ্রামে দেওনের লিগা। ৭০০ কোটি মানুষের একটা দুনিয়ায় আমরা থাকি, সাদা-বাদামী, হিন্দু-জাপানী, সবার লগেই এইখানে সবার কিছু না কিছু মিল আছে। আরেকজনের লগে নিজের ক্ষিধা লাগার, ভালো লাগার, ঘেন্না করার, বদ গন্ধ টের পাওনের অনুভূতিগুলার মিল পায়া যারা মাথা নাইড়া 'ঠিক ঠিক' কয়া 'ইন্সপায়ার্ড' হন নিচের ছবিডা তাঁগো লাইগাঃ

I was expecting to hate this novel as a piece of hippie Orientalist garbage. I’ve heard too many blithe speeches about the wisdom of the East, from too many people whose minds have been unhinged by too many substances. Luckily for me—or perhaps unluckily, since I take a perverse pleasure in writing negative reviews—I thought the book was quite good.

First and foremost, Siddhartha is an effective and innovative novel. Hesse’s prose roles forward like, well… a river. It’s hypnotic, and perfectly suited to the subject matter. Any good story has drama in it, and Hesse effectively dramatizes the inner thoughts of his protagonist. The resulting drive combines the suspense of a mystery novel—will he achieve enlightenment? what will it consist of?—with the charm of a good Bildungsroman. Well done, Hermann.

The spiritual side of the novel is also impressive. Most of the time, stuff like this ends up a string of platitudinous philosophy-lite. But Hesse has put some effort and time his own spiritual journey, and it shows. The successive states through which Siddhartha progresses are believable and concrete. And his final words to Govinda have all the effect of the huge orchestral crescendo and triumphant piano chord that ends the Beatles' “A Day in the Life”. Both in content and form, it is very well done. Yes, there is a contradiction in the end: Siddartha claims that his wisdom cannot be taught, and then proceeds to teach it. (Plus, the whole book is an attempt to teach wisdom.) But it sounds good on paper, so what the heck.

Whether or not Hesse accurately portrayed the tenets of Buddhism or ancient India—I couldn’t care less. He isn’t a theologian, nor is he a historian. He is a novelist. And this is a damn fine novel.

I must admit I had expected more of this (I always considered Hesse's Steppenwolf an all-time favorite). But I have myself to blame, as I had been warned by the title: this is a poem, but I couldn't stop myself from reading it as if it were a novel. This book doesn't explain, it sings. And I guess I don't really like the tune.

There are a lot of dreamy passages, metaphors and Sansaras of reasoning. We run, life runs, the river runs, we run in the river of life running in the rivers within us. That sort of thing. The repetitions are way more artistic and soothing to the ear than what I just did, but given that I read an English translation (even though it was a very good one), the original art inevitably gets lost to some extent.

I think Hermann Hesse himself was not sure what to think of the text he produced, and I keep wondering if he himself considered himself to be "wise" and "enlightened". He certainly gives off that vibe during most of the book, which I guess was a must to be able to give the book any impact. He certainly seems to have gathered a following through this poem, though I fail to see what exactly it is that is so convincing, captivating or attractive. Let alone life-changing. Om? A bit vague, no? It's like a cloud. I wonder how one can change his life after reading this? There's no practical way I can discern- clinging to clouds has proved futile time and again. Maybe in a philosophical sense, where seeing the cloud is enough to make you realize something, but sadly, that realization didn't present itself to me through this book.

For all the nicely sounding prose and despite the lofty air it assumes, the author's inner conflict and struggle over this work was made evident to me through a quote that I'll share in closing, a quote that could have been used as a disclaimer at the start of the book. The author chose to spare it for the last chapter however, and the words feel like an apology, a cop-out even. A bit like those fantastical novels that end with

"And then he woke up, and was relieved to find it was all a dream."

The writer seems to build up to something nicely, but then throws his hands up in the air and gives up.

Let these words be a warning for those seeking answers:

"Wisdom cannot be passed on. Wisdom that a wise man attempts to pass on always sounds like foolishness."

These words strengthened my skepticism, explaining the maybe harsh tone of this review, but if wisdom can't be passed on, and readers claim to have gained wisdom by reading this, what am I missing?

Like I said, I probacertainly haven't been reading/reviewing this as the author had intended it. The journey is what matters, not the answer. Maybe this 2 star review tells you more about how my mind has closed off for the sing-songs of the soul and has become impervious for the deepest truths of living. I certainly hope not, but it might be something for you to consider before you pass up on this book. Plenty of people loved it and they're good people too.

What is the meaning of life? I don't know, and you're not going to find the answer in this book, although I've read some reviews of readers who claim it changed their lives, so there you go.
