আবারো রাত তিনটার দিকে ঘুম ভেঙে গেলো। পুরো শরীর ঘেমে গেছে,বুক ভরে শ্বাস নিচ্ছি। আগের মতোই একটি শুভ্র নীল জামা পড়ে এসেছে মেয়েটা। চেয়ারটা টেনে বসে পড়লো সে। টেবিলের উপর কনুই রেখে গালে হাত দিয়ে একদৃষ্টিতে দেয়ালে টানানো ছবিটার দিকে চেয়ে রইলো যেনো আমার উপস্থিতি টের ই পাচ্ছেনা। ছবিটা সমুদ্রতটে কাফকার। আমাদের জগৎ ভিন্ন,সময়কাল ভিন্ন,তার জগৎে আমার অস্তিত্ব আছে কীনা জানা নেই। তবে একটা বিষয় আমি স্পষ্ট ভাবে জানি,
"মেয়েটাকে আমি ভালোবাসি"

➡️ গল্পটা ১৫ বছর বয়সী এক তরুনের। তার নাম কাফকা তামুরা। ছোটোবেলা থেকেই কারো ভালোবাসা পায়নি,৪ বছর বয়সে মা ছেড়ে চলে গেছে, বাবা সবসময় অভিশাপ দিয়ে গেছে তাকে। তার ছোট্ট জীবনটার বেশিরভাগ সময়ই গেছে লাইব্রেরীতে বই পড়ে। কোনো বন্ধু-বান্ধব নেই, জগৎের প্রতি টান নেই, ভালোবাসার মানুষ নেই। এরকম বন্ধনহীন মানুষের যা করা উচিৎ তাই করে কাফকা। বাড়ি থেকে পালিয়ে যায় সে। পিছনে রেখে যায় বাবার বিশাল সম্পত্তি। নতুন একটা শহরে গিয়ে একটা পারিবারিক লাইব্রেরীতে চাকরীও জুটিয়ে নেয়। মনের মধ্যে তার অনেক প্রশ্ন, কেনো তার মা তাকে ছেড়ে গিয়েছিলো? তার বাবা তাকে অদ্ভুত অভিশাপগুলোই বা কেনো দিলো? এরকমই হাজাররকম ভাবনা,চিন্তা,উপলব্ধি কাফকা তামুরার সাথে আমাদেরকেও আন্দোলিত করে যায়। একসময় প্রেমে পড়ে সে। তবে যার প্রেমে পড়েছে সে এই জগৎের সত্ত্বা নয়। এরই মাধ্যমে গল্পে আইডেন্টিটি ক্রাইসিসের সূচনা ঘটে। কাফকা তামুরার সমান্তরালে গল্পের অন্যতম মূল চরিত্র মি.নাকাতা। দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময় এক অদ্ভুত ঘটনায় স্মৃতিশক্তি সহ পড়ালেখার ক্ষমতা হারিয়ে ফেলে। সেও বন্ধনহীন একজন মানুষ। কথা বলে একটু অদ্ভুতভাবে। তবে মজার বিষয় হচ্ছে সে বিড়ালদের সাথে কথা বলতে পারে। লোকের বিড়াল হারিয়ে গেলে তা খুজে দিতে বদ্ধ পরিকর। কোনো দুশ্চিন্তা নেই,জটিলতা নেই,একদমই ছিমছাম একটা জীবন। কিন্তু ঘটনা পরিক্রমায় একটা খুন করে সে। এরপর শুরু হয় নতুনভবে জীবনে পাঠোদ্ধার এর গল্প। এই গল্পে কাফকা তামুরা ও নাকাতা একসাথে মিশে যায়। গল্পে এই দুজন বাদেও লাইব্রেরীয়ান ওশিমা,মিস সায়েকি,গাড়িচালক ওশিনোর গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা আছে। কাফকা ও নাকাতা তাদের সারাজীবন ভালোবাসা খুজে চলেছে, তারা এমন একটা স্থান খুজেছে যেখানে বারবার ফিরে আসা যায়। কাফকা একটা সময় নিজের ভালোবাসা খুজে পায়, সেই ভালোবাসার জন্য অতীত, ভবিষ্যৎ সবকিছু ধ্বংস করতে সে রাজী। এই উপন্যাসের মূল উপজীব্য জাদুবাস্তবতা,আইডেন্টিটি ক্রাইসিস যার মাধ্যমে লেখক গভীর জীবনবোধের সন্ধান করেছেন,দিয়েছেন। ম্যাগনাম ওপাস নামক একটা শব্দ আছে যার দ্বারা কারো শ্রেষ্ঠ কাজ বুঝানো হয়।কাফকা অন দ্য শোরকে বলা হয় হারুকি মুরাকামির ম্যাগনাম ওপাস। এই বই নিয়ে আলোচনা করলে সারাদিন কথা বলা যাবে, পাতার পর পাতা লেখা যাবে, হাজারবার পড়া যাবে,নতুনভাবে আবিষ্কার করা যাবে। বইয়ের কিছু বিষয় খুবই সেনসিটিভ। তাই অনেকের কাছে ভালনারেবল হতে পারে। কাফকা অন দ্য শোর জাপানী এবং বিশ্বসাহিত্যের অনন্য সৃষ্টি। গ্যাব্রিয়েল গার্সিয়া মার্কেজ ১৯৮৪ সালে নি:সঙ্গতার একশ বছরের জন্য নোবেল পেয়েছিলেন। মুরাকামি এই বই লেখেন ২০০২ সালে। ১৯৮৪ এর আগে প্রকাশিত হলে নোবেলটা অনায়াসেই তাকে দিয়ে দেওয়া হতো বলে আমার মনে হয়।

হারুকি মুরাকামির বইয়ে সবসময় এক ধরণের বিষণ্ণতা আর আদিমতার ঘ্রাণ থাকে; এই বইটাও তার ব্যতিক্রম নয়। এখানে ব্যাখ্যার অতীত অনেক ঘটনা আছে, ভাবিয়ে তোলার মতো অনেক বিষয় আছে।

প্রথমে অনুবাদকের ব্যাপারে দু'এক কথা বলি - অভিজিৎ মুখার্জি যাদব বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের স্কুল অফ লিংগুইস্টিকস অ্যান্ড ল্যাংগুয়েজেস্ - এর প্রাক্তন জয়েন্ট ডিরেক্টর এবং বর্তমানে যাদব বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে জাপানি ভাষা শিক্ষার ভারপ্রাপ্ত অধ্যাপক। পড়িয়েছেন জাপানের কানাজাওয়া বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রযুক্তি, বহুবার জাপানি ভাষার শিক্ষকতার প্রশিক্ষণ পেয়েছেন জাপান ফাইন্ডেশনের। জাপানি সাহিত্য বাংলায় অনুবাদের জন্য ২০১৭ সালে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ বাংলা একাডেমি থেকে লীলা রায় স্মরণ সম্মানে সম্মানিত হয়েছেন।
তাই এইরকম একজন মানুষের অনুবাদ যে উৎকৃষ্ট মানের হবে, তা নিয়ে কোনো সন্দেহ নেই। মূল জাপানি থেকে প্রথমবার বাংলা ভাষায় অনূদিত হয়েছে। অতি চমৎকার অনুবাদ, সুন্দর বর্ণনা, একবারের জন্যেও মনে হয়নি অনুবাদ পড়ছি।

হারুকি মুরাকামি, বিশ্বসাহিত্যের পাঠকের কাছে জাপানের হারুকি মুরাকামি অপরিচিত নাম নয়। পুবের, পশ্চিমের, প্রাচীন এবং হালের সংস্কৃতি, ইতিহাস ও রুচির অন্ধিসন্ধির খোঁজ রাখা, প্রঞ্জাবান এই লেখক একাধারে দার্শনিকও বটে। ওনার ২০০২ সালে প্রকাশিত উপন্যাস "উমিবে নো কাফুকা (Umibe no Kafuka)" এযাবৎ মুরাকামির সব থেকে জনপ্রিয় উপন্যাস, বিশ্বের প্রায় পঞ্চাশটিরও বেশি ভাষায় প্রকাশিত হয়েছে।

কাহিনী - সুদীর্ঘ উপন্যাস শুরু হচ্ছে একসাথে দুটো ঘটনা নিয়ে, পনেরো বছরের তামুরা কাফকা বাড়ি থেকে পালিয়েছে বাইরে পরিবেশের সাথে পরিচিত হবার জন্য, বাবার দেওয়া ইদিপাস-শাপ থেকে বাঁচতে টোকিও থেকে পালিয়ে রহস্যময় এক পুরোনো লাইব্রেরিতে আশ্রয় নেয়।
অপরদিকে, নাকাতা নামের এক বুড়ো, ছোটবেলায় এক্সিডেন্টে ব্রেন ড্যামেজ হয়ে পড়ালেখার ক্ষমতা হারিয়ে বোকা হয়ে গিয়েছে, কিন্তু অস্বাভাবিক ব্যাপার হল, সে এরপর থেকেই বিড়ালদের সাথে কথা বলতে পারে৷ তাই সে বুড়ো বয়সে পাড়ার লোকদের হারানো বিড়াল খুঁজে দে��়। একদিন গোমা নামের এক বিড়াল খুঁজতে গিয়ে সে পরিচিত হয় জনি ওয়াকার নামে দাবী করা এক মানুষের সাথে, যে বিড়ালদের ধরে তাদের মেরে ফেলে আত্মা দিয়ে একটা বাশি বানানোর তাল করছে৷ তারপর?
পাতায় পাতায় যে গভীর জীবন দৃষ্টি, মানুষের জীবন এর অসারতা, উদ্দেশ্য, ভালবাসা, ভেতরের বা মনের রাক্ষসের সাথে পরিচয়, নিজেকে ধ্বংস করার প্রবনতা, সাথে সুপারন্যাচারাল ঘটনা, কিছুটা এডাল্ট জিনিস নিয়ে ঘাটা, জৈবি��� আর মানসিক ভালবাসার সম্পর্ক, নিজের মধ্যে নিজেকে হারিয়ে ফেলা ---- কি নেই! বুড়ো নাকাতা, মিমি নামের বিড়াল, জনি ওয়াকার, ক্রো, কাফকা, মিস সাইকি, অশিমা, হোশিনো, সাকুরা ---- এরা একেকজন যে আমাকে এমনভাবে আকৃষ্ট করেছে, যে আমি ওদের চাক্ষুষ দেখছিলাম বইয়ের পাতায়৷ অনেকদিন তাদের ভুলতে পারব না, এটা সত্য৷

এই মরণশীল পৃথিবীর কিনারায় আছে আরেক জগৎ। যেখানে বিচ্ছেদ নেই, বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে পড়া নেই, সময় যেখানে থাবা বসাতে পারে না; যেখান থেকে আমরা বার বার এই পৃথিবীটাতে আসি, আবার ফিরে যাই, ফেরার পথে কুড়িয়ে নিতে হয় সেই সব অস্ত্র, বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে পড়া ঠেকাতে নানা চিহ্নের উপকরণ।
উপন্যাস সমাপ্ত হওয়ার পর ভূতগ্রস্তের মত লাগছিল। মনে হচ্ছিল জগতের একটি নয়, একাধিক স্তরে যাওয়া আসা ঘটেছিল পাঠক হিসেবে। কিন্তু এমন তো হয়! স্বরচিত ধারণার জগতে বাছাই করা মেটাফর নিয়ে মানুষ কি আজীবন একটি ভুল ধারনার সাথে বাস করে না?

この小説を読んでからメタファーがやたら口癖に（笑）。村上春樹の日常的非日常な世界観の代表作かもですね。

১৫ বছরের কাফকা তামুরা ঘর পালিয়ে কী সুন্দর করেই না নতুন একটা শহরে থাকতে শুরু করেছিলো। ট্রেনে চেপে সকাল সকাল চলে যেতো লাইব্রেরি, সেখানে সারাদিন বই পড়া। রুটিনে আবার জিমে যাওয়াও আছে। মাঝে সুযোগ হয় নিস্তব্ধ প্রকৃতিতে একা হয়ে যাওয়ার। রহস্যময় কিছু ঘটনার বাস্তব বর্ণনা। একটুও বাড়াবাড়ি নেই। সরল সোজা বৃদ্ধ নাকাতা কী সুন্দর করেই না বেড়ালদের সাথে কথা বলে। সবচেয়ে আদরের কথোপকথনটি ছিল মি. কাওয়ামুরার সাথে।
অথচ গল্পের বুনিয়াদ কতটা নোংরা। পরের অংশটা পড়বার আর রুচি হচ্ছে না। শুধু পরের অংশ কী, মুরাকামিই বাদ। বিশ্রী জিনিসের পাল্লাই ভারী এখানে।

My experience with Murakami is ambiguous and rather peculiar. He was the first author I read in Japanese and for that reason alone he holds a special place in my heart. I started reading Murakami from borrowed books my professor put at my disposal, first clinging to the English translation and relying so heavily on the dictionary that initially it took me up to a whole hour to read a single page (!). Alongside Murakami's writings I could track my handle on the Japanese language improving almost in real time and given my method of reading out loud until I can enunciate as fluently as I would my mother language, I have spent an absurd amount of time grapping with each and every individual line.

So the very act of reading Murakami, for me, differs radically from every other author I have yet encountered.

I suspect that I have poured more energy into the text itself, be in the Japanese original or the translation against which I used to match it regularly, than hardcore fans of his whose dedication I am not likely to ever match. Because I have actually never read an entire Murakami book from start to finish.

There are several reasons for this. Some are entirely of a practical nature and have nothing to do with the content of the text itself: I was reading off borrowed books split across several volumes as is common of Japanese editions and took so long I eventually had to return them before finishing them. But that aside- and overlapping it, since it made me take longer breaks than I would otherwise have done- it seems I always run into some episode that grosses me out so much that I abandon the book entirely.

Do I mean the by now infamous awkward sex scenes? Yes. But not because they are "awkward" but because on two instances I have encountered sex scenes in which one of the characters was a minor and the other an adult. The tone in which these were delivered is what made me recoil in disgust: they are not presented as the gross affairs they ought to be but as either part and parcel of the dreamy, surreal nature of his fiction or just something that kinda happens.

There is plenty to appreciate in this particular volume- this is only the first volume out of two, comprising up to chapter 23- from the talking cats, to Nakata-san, to the young narrator's trip across Japan and the library itself, whose staff is weirdly intriguing. The historical angle, not always something fans like all that much, is the kind of material Japanese audiences should be more exposed to. Not to mention, a trans character who is multilayered at a time when fiction, in general, tended to either ignore or demonize trans people.

But it is not immune to what I find so disgraceful about Murakami: In this one we have a woman in her twenties masturbating a boy who just turned 15. Given the first person narrative of this portion, it does not come across as the author endorsing it and the boy is shown to be conflicted about it afterward. Still, though, she is a positive character whose action is seen as helping the boy relax in order to fall asleep. It veers very much on the language abusers and groomers will use by telling him she has a boyfriend and that this does not count as sex.

Recently, Kawakami Mieko- I will read her 夏物語 when I am done with the next volume as I cannot tackle two books in Japan simultaneously- held his feet to the fire and I found myself greatly vindicated. A small episode in this book that I will spoiler tag just to be on the safe side, is almost a premonition of what feminist criticism would have to say about Murakami: at one point the library is visited by a pair of uptight snooty feminists who demand that gender specific bathrooms be made available to the public as presently there is only one. They view this as discrimination as they do the way in which the authors are indexed. From the moment they appear to the moment they depart- and they are only present in one scene- they are shown as being petty, terrible people just out to make everything more difficult for everyone just because they can. Oshima, a transman, puts them in their place with style and the reader is supposed to take from this that feminists are out to spite small libraries because, well, feminists. Now, I am not saying this kind of attitude does not exist. But given the dismal record Japan still has on gender parity, to the point the OECD regularly ranks it at the very bottom, I doubt feminists in the late 90's were the problem. At all. I suspect Murakami had to make the trans character take them down because otherwise it would be overt punching down. I found this episode that is indeed so small you are not likely to ever see it mentioned, to be very telling. Why go out of your way to write about Evil Feminists? Oh well, at least they weren't Korean...so I guess there's that. Shivers the thought.

I will end with an aside: If you read Murakami in translation, odds are you read a text that differs in certain points from the Japanese original. Having spent plenty of time comparing originals and translations, I noticed that certain lines were omitted entirely in the translation. Usually these changes are entirely irrelevant, you get fewer "he nodded" but on occasion entire paragraphs got chopped.

This does not change the story in any significant way but it is interesting and something I don't think most readers were aware.

মুরাকামি-সান আমার প্রিয় লেখক। যখনই তাঁর কোনো বই পড়ে শেষ করি, তখনই একটা আশঙ্কাও জাগে যে, এভাবে পড়ে শেষ করে ফেলার পর যদি আর কোনো বই বাকি না থাকে? Kafka on the Shore লেখকের জগৎজুড়ে জনপ্রিয় বইগুলোর মাঝে অন্যতম। রুদ্ধশ্বাসে পড়ে পরে কি হলো জানতে চাওয়ার মত কাহিনী, তাইতো দ্বিতীয় অংশ পড়া শুরু করতে যাচ্ছি অনতিবিলম্বে!

সমুদ্রতটে কাফকা - অনূদিত এই নাম আমাকে বইটি কিনতে অনেকটা বাধ্যই করে। সাধারণত আমি ইংরেজি অনুবাদই পড়ে থাকি বিদেশী লেখকদের। তবে এটার অনূদিত নামটার মাঝেই একটা আকর্ষণ ছিলো, তাই এক/দুই পৃষ্ঠা পড়ে দেখি, খুবই সাবলীল অনুবাদ! অনুবাদক অভিজিৎ মুখার্জির অন্য অনুবাদগুলোও পড়ার প্রবল ইচ্ছে আছে। প্রচ্ছদটাও অসাধারণ! বইটি কেনা ও অনুবাদটি পড়া সম্পূর্ণ সার্থক!
