Always a reluctant speaker, I have - to be honest - never put in the effort to apply myself to develop the skill... but small lessons over the years that I have picked up have helped me to acknowledge that it is possible to become better and even achieve the impossible task of engaging people, catching their attention...

The book mostly reinforces what I have learnt earlier - either from other books or articles, or thru my own experiments - and these I can validate from my own trials:

(1) I have seen that even though natural charm and style cannot be acquired, yet it can be compensated by talking about what you know, sharing your passion and excitement (which is always contagious), and being honest and truthful...

(2) It is important to just being yourself (and not imitating others).

(3) I have tried and seen that talking about an experience or something that life has taught you never fails to keep interest, it also gets you started and get over your nerves... it also is the simplest way to be enthusiastic as you talk and your emotions and experiences will spark the interest to listen...

(3) I have also seen that memorising a speech never works - and the only way is to just structure your thoughts, arrange the ideas beforehand and then speak conversationally.

(4) And that the biggest roadblock is confidence and it requires time and practice (as does every other skill) - so you need to combine the desire to improve with the persistence to keep trying and the self-assurance that you will succeed, but above all persistence...

The book reinforces all this again and spends a major part of the book in convincing you that it is natural to be afraid, that you are not an exception and with effort you can make such progress to change your life. I found a lot of repetition esp. as different types of speaking occasions are covered and the underlying themes of how to prepare and deliver are quite similar... but it’s an easy to read book and you can cover it over a few weeks if you read a few pages every day.

I did note down some additional suggestions - most of these are obvious, but sometimes it helps to see it spelled out and be reminded of...
- begin the talk with an incident - to catch attention immediately is very important
- introductions can be made interesting by following the structure of - topic, importance, speaker (TIS)
- limit the subject - do not try to cover the open range
- be specific - fill the talk with details
- close a talk with a call for action - make the point brief and specific, be sure to stress one reason or benefit (and not be tempted to list all)

Read the book if you need a reminder or a push ... and start practicing in every small or big situation and you will see your confidence grow over time...

Public Speaking is a great fear for many people. Dale Carnegie ran a workshop many years ago to help people polish their speaking skills. He reconfigured the entire course because the textbooks weren't for the average person. Carnegie's works always make me think of a 1930s radio announcer.

Rhetoric and oratory skills are valuable. The book provides ideas and tips to help improve your speeches and poise. Many years ago, when I was in college, I took a course in public speaking. I learned a lot, and the book refreshed those memories. The worst part is we taped all of the speeches, so if I knew where they were, I could watch them again.

The advice is evident in some cases. Speak about things you like or enjoy. Share a hobby or passion with your audience. Make it into a conversation rather than a sermon. Finally, keep it short. Your audience's time is valuable, and they can't get that back.

I enjoyed the book. Thanks for reading my review, and see you next time.

The book really is a quick and easy guide to public speaking. The things I loved about the book is that (a) it is easy to understand, (b) reading it wasn't boring because it is filled with true stories about the people who Dale Carnegie taught and anecdotes that makes the topics easier to digest and to retain in the readers' mind and (c) there is a sort-of chapter summary at the end of every chapter, which reminds the readers of what was tackled and the important points of the chapter. I honestly can't a find a fault in this book.

One of the most boring and “basic” books I have ever read. It took me about 3 months to finish this book, since reading it was extremely boring and I had no motive to finish it, when I had only 70 pages left in the book. I have read Carnegie’s “How to win friends and influence people” and I honestly had much higher expectations on this book since I had the other book in the back of my mind.

Truth be told, the book had some silver linings at the beginning and at the end (especially Impromptu talks). However, the book could have been much better if it had third of its volume and if the author had actually spent a few minutes thinking about the structure of the book (for example, the book has no ending remarks and in the middle of the book there is a chapter that is called “Applying What you Learned”. This chapter talks about techniques and tactics that will be mentioned in later chapters).

I have done my own research on the book (unfortunately after I started it), and I have realized that the book has different versions / editions and each version has a completely different structure than the other versions. I was also surprised to know that Dale didn’t actually write the book, but instead the book was written by wife (Dorothy Carnegie) based on Dale’s notes.

To me, reading this book was a waste of time and I was looking forward to reading other books that were “written” by Carnegie, however while reading this book, my reading list has unfortunately taken a different turn on the genres that I am willing to read.
