Adam C. Zern shares his thoughts . . .

"I'm always willing to give an unknown book a try if I get it for free or an extremely reduced price. This was the case for books like The Thirteen American Arguments by Howard Fineman and Rights from Wrongs by Alan Dershowitz. Some of these unknowns ended up becoming true gems that I found great value in and others didn't have all that much to offer. The Quick and Easy Way to Effective Speaking by Dale Carnegie was one of those freebies I picked up after completing a school project, along with Dale Carnegie's very well known How to Win Friends and Influence People.

I can't help but think of Snake Oil when I see a title on any book that begins with "The Quick and Easy Way . . ." Although Mr. Carnegie's book isn't Snake Oil, simply reading the book isn't a quick and easy way to effective speaking. To his credit, Mr. Carnegie explicitly states that his ideas and suggestions have to be practically implemented in order for anyone to become a more effective speaker. The book provides interesting insights, ideas, axioms, and anecdotes, but nothing revolutionary. Although, I can't help but think that more contemporary self-help / effective speaking books might offer more research based information but probably not that much more in terms of general principles. It’s hard not to be reminded of what the Preacher had to say so long ago: “there is no new thing under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9).

Reading The Quick and Easy Way to Effective Speaking was somewhat of a one-off for me. I more than likely would not have purchased such a book, but picking it up for free gave me an excuse to spend a few days with it. I'm sure if I ever have to share some thoughts on effective speaking, especially public speaking, I'll flip back through its pages for some interesting quotes or thoughts, but I probably won't think that much about the book aside from that."

—Dale Carnegie

While this book is kind of old by now, I think most topics still hold up today. Even though the book is presented as a guide, with certain tips and standard rules to follow if you want to become a better speaker, what it most accomplishes is empowering you to have the confidence needed to be an effective public speaker. I think that that is the biggest impact the book can have, more than teaching you specific ways to catch your audience’s interest and keep them interested in your speech. Given that the world has changed since the publishing of this book, and that we live in a world of attaining information at a moment’s notice, some themes in the book start to become a bit obsolete, but they still help prepare you for what’s ahead. One of the lessons of the book is that when you are prepared, then making a public speech will be much easier because you will have confidence in what you have to say. Since the book teaches you a lot about public speeches, it already does a bit of that preparation work, so it has a visible positive impact on how you handle yourself public speaking.

This book is a must read for anyone who finds lack of confidence while speaking on feet to the audience. It is written mostly in the forms of story which will grip you and explain you the concepts easily and quickly.

I really enjoyed this book and will re-read it to remember the key concepts before giving my next presentation.

We are not born competent, we become so

Draw inspiration from the experience of others

Do not lose sight of your goal

Be sure of your success beforehand

Seize every opportunity to practice

The fear of public speaking comes from lack of habit

Talk about your subject with your friends: this is a way to test the ideas

To become confident, then you have to act as if you were

Search for subjects in your past. Speak about them

Ask yourself if you would be able to defend your point of view with conviction if you are contradicted

Communicate your enthusiasm to the public

The brain cannot follow a dull litany for a long time. It is better to present fewer ideas but to enrich them with examples and picturesque details

Dramatize your presentation using a dialogue

Talk to your listeners about their interests

Make sincere compliments

Be humble

Use a personal experience as an event and begin your presentation with a detail of the event
advise the action with strength and conviction

Highlight the benefit

Arrange your ideas in a logical sequence

List your ideas as you develop them

Compare what’s new with what’s familiar

Relax and break down barriers which prevent you from being natural

Highlight what makes you different from others

Avoid monologues

Arouse curiosity. State a striking fact

Ask the audience to vote by show of hands

Promise the public that you will tell them how they can get what they want

Show an object

Don’t start with an excuse

Use statistics. Make use of expert testimony

Ask for concrete, simple and achievable action

Sukses Berkomunikasi told the secrets to successful public speaking. Explaining tips and tricks to give an aspiring speech and presentation, this book broke the walls of fear down. Not only public speaking and speech, but it also explained what good communication looks like. Chapter by chapter it gave a new topic, starting with 4-eyes communication to an audience presentation. From informal to formal communication, including business pitches and product promotion. I learned that to create smooth communication, you had to pay attention and listen to the person. Not only that, but you also needed to listen with your heart, really grasping and mean what that person said word by word. To give an aspiring speech, you had to research the topic 10x more than what is given. This book was insightful for those who wanted to increase their confidence in speaking.

Love, love, loved it!
My grandfather was a very successful businessman in the insurance sector in his hay day. While he was still working his way up the corporate ladder, his HR department offered the employees some free psychology courses. My grandfather went to every single one. Once he had completed these courses, he used what he had learned ‘against’ his superiors and requested a promotion using the skills the company had given him. He was promoted the next day.
From then on, my Opa delved deeper into the world of psychology and found different ways of applying well-known theories to his everyday life. Through his research and his journey to self-improvement, he came across Carnegie’s extensive works. He decided he wanted to master the art of public speaking. He devoured everything he found and implemented his studies immediately. My grandfather reached great success throughout his career and learned to live a good, fulfilling life.
Enter stage right: his beloved granddaughter. I came to my grandparents to ask their advice on how I could improve my university essays. Although the contents were correct, I had received point deductions for my writing. The structure just wasn’t clear enough. My grandfather recommended I read all of Carnegie’s works (soon thereafter there arrived a heavy Amazon package at my house containing all of said works).
My Opa recommended I start with this book. Although Carnegie based his rules on speech, many of his teachings could be adapted to a written format. I studied the book, made notes on what I thought would help me with my essays, and tried to internalise as much of the contents as possible.
I finished reading this book a few months ago, but I’ve only just received my grade for my latest assignment: 86%. The highest grade I’ve received throughout my entire degree (and I’m in my last year).
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has trouble finding the right words, speaking in public, or writing academic essays.
