وقبل أن تدخل لتقرأ الرواية وتتفاجأ بأسلوبها, فالرواية مكتوبة بتقنية أدبية تسمة "تيار الوعي", أو "تداعي الذاكر", حيث تنطلق الأحداث ضبابية غير متسلسلة أو مترابطة ليعبّر بها الكاتب عن وجهة نظره.


الرواية مسلية في معظم أجزائها, والترجمة ممتازة لمترجم مجهول.


آية الله الخميني أعلن عن جائزة خمسة مليون دولار لقتل الكاتب, ولا أظنها لأجل النبي, بل لأجل أنه شعر أن الكاتب احتقره عندما ذكره في سطر وحيد شبهه فيه بالنبي محمد,


اسم بلدة الحجاج "تيتليبر" قرأتها لأول مرة "تليتبيز", ووجدت بعدها أن إسم "تليتبيز" استهواني أكتر, وشعرت أنه لا داعي لنطق الكلمة صحيحة, فاسم قرية تليتبيز له جرس ومعنى أفضل بكتير عندي.

دي مقالة بتعرض قضية الآيات الشيطانية اللي ذكرها الكاتب عرضا في الكتاب و اللي اتسمت على اسمه : الآيات الشيطانية في القرآن

وأياً كانت نتيجة الاختلاف على الآيات الشيطانية, فأعمال العنف والهمجية التي صدرت كرد فعل على الكتاب تظل أعمال عنف وهمجية لا مبرر لها.

A near perfect novel. I loved the writing. I loved the characters. I loved how Rushdie was able to master heaven and hell, saint and sinner, heaven and earth in this dreamlike exploration of what it means to be an immigrant, an angel, a saint and a sinner. At times he writes like a post-modern satirist cum Pynchon, then suddenly he melts into his best post-colonial Achebe, and then off again on his magical realist, literary carpet à la Gabriel García Márquez. Rushdie's writing is a mountain you don't climb down, you fly off.

I tried with this one. I had a great group of buddy readers on Litsy. It was so interesting the variety in responses to it. Some of us DNF, others did and panned it, others really liked it! Though it wasn't for me, I freely admit an admiration for a book that can prompt such varied reactions (the normal kind...not the murderous kind) among readers. I was horrified to learn of the fatwa on Rushdie and the time he spent in hiding, the deaths of the translators, the destruction of bookstores that sold it, and all the hate that stemmed from the response to this book. I have a rant stored up about this, but another time and another place, Goodreads friends. I'll spare you.

Why I Only Read 2/3 of the Book:
-I ran out of renewals at the library. I took that as a clear sign finishing wasn't in the cards.
-I developed a sense of apathy towards the characters. I didn't have a strong interest in where the story was going and it just seemed to be pointless to me. I tried to be a good sport and play along for awhile, but the tangents Rushdie takes became too much for me.
-The prose. Rushdie is incredibly eloquent and can craft masterful paragraphs of speech. That being said, he is so verbose at times, I think even he forgot the point he was trying to make and had to circle back. This is a book were it is so easy to get lost in the sentences that you forget the plot and lose your way in a forest of trees. I can only get lost from the plot so many times before I lose interest.
-The grandiosity of the narrator, which makes sense when you realize who the narrator is... However, I started to wonder if the lines between grandiosity of the narrator and author began to blur. Others agreed as well on this point. Rushdie is smart and talented; which he most clearly knows. After certain long winded paragraphs I began to picture Rushdie gesturing to the reader "Eh, eh, did you see what I did there. I don't think you appreciated it enough. Here's some more sentences on that same point. I still don't think you fully grasped my thoughts"

I can't rule out another Rushdie book attempt. I'd definitely want to do it with a group again as that aided quite a bit in the themes, prose, and overall reaction to his book.

Labai įdomus,  išskirtinis kūrinys. Neapleido pojūtis, kad skaitau ,,Meistro ir Margaritos" kitą dalį, ir ką, pasigilinus radau, jog Salman Rushdie romaną parašė įkvėptas būtent Bulgakovo! Netgi yra  straipsnis (Balasubramanian, R. (1995). The Similarities Between Mikahil Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita and Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses)  kuriame abu šie kūriniai lyginami! Taigi, kas žavėjosi Meistru ir Margarita  turėtų mėgautis ir Šėtoniškomis eilėmis. Abiejų žanras- magiškasis realizmas. Tik eilėse labiau susitelkta į Indijos problemas. Gvildenama amžinoji gėrio ir blogio kovos tema, supriešinti Rytai ir Vakarai, ironizuota religijų tarpusavio nesantaika.

I was expecting it to be harsh and dry, but to my surprise it's quite the opposite. It's not really an attack on Islam as it's widely thought (although some fragments of it could result offensive for very devout muslims); it's more a novel about human nature, about love, hate, forgiveness, evil, good, identity, etc. I found it to be a very enjoyable book full of fantastic events which left me thinking upon finishing my reading.

My fellow book lovers, I have a confession to make—I am utterly ashamed of myself for not having read any of Salman Rushdie’s work before this year. In my oversight, I was unknowingly depriving myself of so very much.
This is the second Rushdie book I have now read, the first being “The Enchantress of Florence,” which is also an astonishing, brilliant work.

The Satanic Verses: Most everyone has heard something about the controversy surrounding this infamous tome. Yes, it is a widely banned book, it inflamed the ire of Ayatollah Khomeni and many other Muslims, it caused Rushdie to go into hiding for a decade, and it ultimately inspired the assassination of the Japanese translator and attempts on the lives of other translators, and an assassination attempt on the author himself earlier this year.

But what of the book itself? It is dense. Sprawling. Resplendent with memorable characters. Full of fantastical dreamy magic. Funny at times. Chock full of forays and insights into a myriad of topics, including Indian culture, British culture, ancient Middle Eastern culture, modern celebrity culture, relationships, theology, psychology, philosophy, history, literary references, and more. Rushdie’s erudition is almost blinding. There’s just so much to chew on here—this is truly a feast for the senses and the intellect.

This is a Book with a capital B. It is a Book to be read and re-read, and to be marveled at. My advice is to read it sometime before you take the Great Dirt Nap.

لا أعلم لماذا رشدي إنحدر بمستواه بهذا العمل ذلك (آيات شيطانية) فكرًا وأسلوبا أدبيًا. خصوصًا أنني قرأت له قبل هذ العمل رواية (أطفال منتصف الليل)أولًآ وهي رائعته الجميلة، والتي أبدع فيها بموضوع الهند قبل وبعد الإستقلال، ثم قرأت (آيات شيطانية) ومن بعدها غير عمل له ومنها عمله (العار). فوجدت حيرتي في إنحداره لهذا المستوى ربما أراد تقديم تنازلات أكثر ليتأقلم مع المجتمع الجديد! كعادة بعض الكتاب العرب والمسلمين وغيرهم من القادمين من دول العالم الثالث كنوع من الإنسلاخ القائم في الأساس على تشضي الهوية ليس على أثر جغرافي بقدر ماهو إحساس بالدونية.



قدم رشدي قبل (آيات) وبعد آيات أجمل أعماله من الناحية البنائية للرواية ومن ناحية القدرة الروائية فلماذا فعل مافعل؟!.. هذه مضحك ومخجل... هذه الرواية وجدتها مُقذية ومنفرة.

حينًا أقول أن رواية (منتصف الليل) وهبت رشيد مكانة عالمية وهو قابع في بريطانيا ولاشك صدى روايته وصل لبلده الهند فلماذا هذا المنزلق في رواية بائسة موضوعًا وطريقة معالجة حتي أنني بت أستغرب "التطبيل" الذ يحصده من بعض العرب مسلمين وغير مسلمين من دعاة الحرية التي تمجدهم دار (الجمل) في غلاف الرواية حتي تُحسن بيع منتجها كعادته إزاء العمل الذي يرفض.

عمومًا تقبع شهرة الرواية في تناولها بالتعريض لشخصية الرسول – صلى الله عليه وسلم – في طريقة معالجة بائسة ومناقشته ضمن سياق الرواية لبعض آي القرآن وفق أفق ضيق ينم عن سوء كبير وعظيم بثقافته التي ينتمي إليها – الإسلامية – التي يتبع لها حتي لو شكليًا (وليس موضوعي الدخول في قلبه فهذا مما بينه وبين الرب). حتى عندما حاولت أن أكون محايدًا وأنظر للرواية من جانب أدبي ومن ناحية تقنية فهي معدومة وهشة بعيدًا عن موضوعها. رغم أن رشدي نحى في كتابتها طريقة الممبدعة العظيمة (فرجينا وولف) في "مسز دالوي" وغيرها من الأعمال التي أبتكرت وطورت فيها "تيار الوعي” إلا أن الرواية ليست بتلك المستوى رغم جودة روائية وأدوات رشدي للأمانة الأدبية.

“The Satanic Verses” are my favourite novel by one of my favourite writers and would make my Top 10 any time of day (ok, Top 5). With magic realism as my genre of choice and Salman Rushdie as my personal sovereign in the field, I am incapable of writing anything that would even come close to a decent review. So I will at least try to sketch out some of the aspects of this novel I enjoyed most.

Staying true to the author’s trademark style, this is a vivid and powerful novel, baroque in its opulence. Again there are so many layers and characters (although not as many as in “Midnight’s Children”), dozens and maybe even hundreds of references and allusions, rich imagination and endless comical effects. This is no story for a lazy or inflexible mind, but at the same time the author never drowns his reader in intellectualism, but creates an account of exaltation and the passion of story-telling in epic proportions.

Some of the topics covered are again heritage and migration, change and belief and identity, with melange and hybridism to it. Identity in this case is more focused on moral and individual identity (even symbolically with the two protagonists being an actor and a voice actor, reinventing their birth name etc.), which is one of the aspects I appreciate very much.

The structure is not so much a fan, but rather consists of layers with characters, motifs and references piercing through them. Throughout the entire novel there are stories within the story, various forms of its re-enacting on different levels and even stories within dreams within the story, creating a multiple distance to the present-day sphere and to reality. As the main embedded narrative is transferred several times to different planes (with wonderful details like the recurring names of the characters) the result are twisted parallels, distorting mirror images of belief and unscrupulousness, but also vulnerability and loneliness. (The story of Mahound, of his ideals and political compromises, his business skills etc. is so rich in thoughts and emotions, but I would not be able to comment that without spoilers.) And still there is always the sophisticated and ironic dance on the verge of myth and truth under the diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia.

I was fascinated with the idea of being seduces and tempted by words (one of the reasons why “Othello”, often referred to here as well, is one of my favourite plays), as well as the constant questioning of truth, reality and revelation (“It was so, it was not so” reminded me very much of “Moby Dick”).

The two protagonists are delightful as counterparts to each other and even to themselves, without that being a paradox. They are socially different and have different functions in the story; while one is more spiritual and bound to miscomprehend, the other is rather grounded in society and mostly misunderstood. Interestingly, their stereotypical mythical features will more than anything show the many facets of the human soul.

If I had to find just one word to describe this novel, I would call it noble. For all the human insecurities, faults, uncertainties, weaknesses and the constant need to raise questions about sacred and profane are treated with sympathy, respect and deep affection.

I could easily read “The Satanic Verses” over and over again without ever exhausting all of its substance or growing tired of it.

Після, відверто кажучи, не просто ганебної, а ще й, що гірше, бездарної автобіографії Салмана Рушді я геть забула, які в нього бувають блискучі тексти - а дарма. Бо "Сатанинські вірші" я шалено люблю - в їхній вербальній надмірності, в їхньому змішуванні магічного реалізму з британською соціальною драмою, імігранти везуть демонів з-під старих небес, не декларуючи на кордоні, імігранти перетворюються на демонів, бо такими їх бачать місцеві, світом вештають безумні пророки й ті, хто прикидаються безумними пророками, а у Сатани завжди найкращі вірші. Ну прегарний же роман.
Треба ще "Ганьбу" перечитати.

Sebbene sia affascinante leggere Rushdie, devo ammettere che non è mai facile calarsi pienamente nella sua realtà e nel suo mondo, anche se ne sei arricchito ogni volta.
L'eterna lotta tra Bene e Male trova qui il suo miglior apice rappresentato dalle figure di Gibreel Farishta, attore del cinema e Saladin Chamcha, uomo dalle mille voci degli spot pubblicitari, che incarnano perfettamente questa dicotomia.
Una lotta e battaglia che vede tutti coinvolti e il cui esito non è così scontato come possa sembrare. Tra realtà e fantasia, intorno a loro ruotano tutta una serie di personaggi, quali Ayesha, Ailee e tantissimi altri che rendono ancora più caratteristico il tutto.
Una opera non facile infarcita di termini della cultura islamica che non risultano essere di facile comprensione, soprattutto se non si conosce quel mondo.
Uno dei libri maggiormente discussi di sempre che fa indignare, riflettere, ma anche stare male. Un romanzo che scatena tantissime reazioni e risulta, proprio per questo, ancora più affascinante e superlativo.

When the Danish Cartoon crisis erupted, I immediately went out and bought a copy of this book... though I'm afraid I didn't then go and read it in public places, as I should have done. It is indeed extravantly disrespectful towards the Prophet, as everyone knows. What's somewhat less well-known is that it's also very disrespectful towards a figure who sure looks a lot like the late Ayatollah Khomeini. I wonder whether this wasn't the real reason for the fatwa? No doubt it has already been discussed at great length...

من أسوأ الكتب اللي قريتها في حياتي فأكيد مفيش تقييم..!
ومع ذلك ححاول أحط مشاعري السلبية علي جنب و أكتب مراجعة موضوعية بقدر الإمكان!

سلمان رشدي هو كاتب بريطاني من أصل هندي له الكثير من الأعمال..فاز بالبوكر عام ١٩٨١ عن روايته أطفال منتصف الليل ..
رواية آيات شيطانية هي روايته الرابعة وتعتبر من أكثر الكتب إثارة للجدل في تاريخ الأدب الحديث وقامت بسببها الكثير من المظاهرات والإحتجاجات من المسلمين في عدة بلدان..كما أصدر آيه الله الخميني في إيران فتوي بهدر دمه و وجوب قتله بعد هذه الرواية!

الكتاب كعمل أدبي مكانه الحقيقي هو سلة المهملات ولكنه أثار الجدل عشان الكاتب ذكر قصة الغرانيق وهي قصة ضعيفة السند،لا داعي لذكر تفاصيلها هنا كما إنه يوجد في الكتاب إهانة مباشرة و بطريقة فجة لزوجات الرسول..!

أفكار الكتاب كلها سطحية وملهاش معني..إسلوب الكاتب ممل بطريقة غير عادية كما إن الحوارات طويلة جداً وحتحس في أوقات كتير إنك مش فاهم هو عاوز يقول ايه ولا أظن إن الكاتب نفسه كان فاهم..!
طول ما إنت بتقرأ حتلاقي نفسك بتقول كلمة واحدة بس..
"ما هذا الهراء"!!! أو بطريقة تانية..ايه كمية القرف دي!!

أؤمن بحرية التعبير والكتابة في كل حاجة و أي حاجة ومش بحب كلمة خطوط حمراء ولكن حرية التعبير لازم يكون وراها فكرة أو هدف أو علي الأقل تكون مكتوبة بإسلوب أدبي ممتع..
ولكن في هذا الشئ ومع هذا الكاتب حتحس إنه مش بس تجاوز بطريقة غير مقبولة ومنفرة و مستفزة و مقززة ولكن حتحس إن مفيش حاجة عاوز يقولها أصلاً وإنه مجرد عاوز يعمل له نفسه شهرة أو منظر أو بمبدأ أنا أعترض إذن أنا موجود..!

الصراحة الكتاب ميستاهلش الورق اللي إتكتب عليه و في رأيي كون آية الله الخميني طلع فتوي بقتل هذا الرجل فهو أداله مكانة وشهرة وقيمة و هو أصلاً ميستاهلهاش!

كتاب سئ..بل الأسوأ علي الأطلاق..لا ينصح به..
