A beautiful book that is almost dreamlike in scope...the kind of dream you have when you think that you have found a piece to the puzzle of life. But Gibran truly has found more than one piece of the puzzle...a book that will be your friend for the rest of your life.

Meh. This is not for me. I didn't hate this collection of prose poetry, by any means, it just didn't do anything for me. I found it boring, not inspiring. I didn't gain anything by reading this and I feel like I wasted my money tbh.

I didn't find Gibran's writing compelling, I didn't think that his choice of words was particularly beautiful or clever. This had 'ordinary' written all over it.

The prophet, Almustafa, has lived in the city of Orphalese for 12 years and is about to board a ship which will carry him home. He is stopped by a group of people, with whom he discusses topics such as life and the human condition. The book is divided into chapters dealing with love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, houses, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death.

Each topic is given just a few pages and, honestly, there was nothing new or original in here. All of his messages came across as preachy which kind of annoyed me. When I read I want to engage with new ideas or with old ideas expressed in new ways. Gibran's prose poetry couldn't fulfil any of that. His messages came across as pretentious and somewhat removed from life: in his musings about work he actually says that it's better to beg on the streets than work without love "for if you bake bread with indifference, you bake bitter bread that feeds but half man's hunger." – beeshhh what???

He's preaching the things that we're all already familiar with: don't be overly materialistic, have an open heart, give without expecting to receive, nobody is just evil or just good, yada yada yada. His passages on food and drink actually made me chuckle: "but since you must kill to eat ... let it be an act of worship." – my vegetarian ass can't relate.

No. Nope. Nopity nope. I'm glad I finally checked this out to know what all of the fuss is about... but no, it's just not for me. Wouldn't recommend it at all.

3.0 ⭐

GENRE - PROSE, POETRY / FICTION.

It's more of a poetry book by Khalil Gibran, I brought it years ago while I was in high school owing to the praises and hype Khalil Gibran recieved for his work. Suddenly decided to go through it and personally have a glimpse of his work.

The book is good in bits and pieces higly philosophical and deep in thought and understanding however I may have not liked it much because I am not into poetry, I did not understand half of the book however I would love to try reading some more noted work of Khalil Gibran in the future.

Thank you

A much respected and read piece of work, I found it to be a hugely boring read. There is no novelty of idea and the comments by the prophet fail to inspire. Maybe the work was ahead of its time when first published but when read today it is at best an average read. Avoid.

It's the story of Almustafa, the Prophet, who is departing the city of Orphalese after a 12 year visit. But before he leaves, before he boards the ship that will return him to his homeland, he is asked by the residents of the city to enlighten them on a variety of subjects that deal with life and life's issues. You will find wisdom, compassion, love, friendship, teaching, and maybe best of all, beauty. This book is a virtual roadmap for how to live your life to complete fulfillment.

I think people are making this out to be something it's not. It's bombastic nonsense.

I had been wanting to read Gibran’s masterpiece for years. It has been in my library for who knows how long beckoning me. Published in 1923, this book has never been out of print and translated in over 100 languages. A prophet, who is returning home, imparts his wisdom of love, marriage, religion, laws, friendship, work, freedom, and much more. While deeply thoughtful and broad on topics of humanity and certain selections are inspirational, I found the writing archaic and too religious. I was not profoundly impacted as I expected. I rate 3.5 stars. Maybe I need to give it another chance some other time as this book is beloved by many.

Some favorites:

"And ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation."

"Your friend is your needs answered. He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving. And he is your board and your fireside. For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace."
