I feel slightly less guilty knowing that Hemingway himself thought this was the worst book he had ever written, but even so, I must be missing something major because I found the prose dull, stilted, unemotional and simply boring. I couldn't connect with any of the characters and that was a big problem. A couple of pages were of interest, but overall I was desperate to finish and celebrating when I did.

"How do you get through nights if you can't sleep? I guess you find out like you find out how it feels to lose your husband. I guess you find out all right. I guess you find out everything in this goddamned life. I guess you do all right. I guess I'm probably finding out right now. You just get dead like most people are most of the time. I guess that's how it is all right. I guess that's just about what happens to you. Well, I've got a good start. I've got a good start if that's what you have to do. I guess that's what you have to do all right. I guess that's it. I guess that's what it comes to. All right. I got a good start then. I'm way ahead of everybody now." (179-180)

The thing is, if you didn't know that To Have and Have Not was written by Hemingway, and if you were told that it was written by someone who was trying very hard to write like Hemingway, you'd believe it.

well at first i thought that i would not concern about main character but i was in wrong way. at the end my tears was in my face i could not stopped them; for Harry for poor old harry.
خب داستانی بود که کلا با توجه به اینکه فیلم های زیادی رو با اقتباس از اون ساختند(ناخدا خورشید- داشتن و نداشتن هاوارد فاکس)قابل حدس و پیش بینی بود برام اما خب باز نگران هری بودم با این حال به خودم می گفتم معلومه هری میمیره که چی این داستان کوفتی چه چیز تازه ای داره بگه .... اما خب تا پایان داستان نگران مری سرنوشتش و هری بودم ...همه ی اینها یعنی همینگوی جادویی عمل می کنه حتی داستانی که اصلا براتون جذابیت نداره رو طوری تعریف می کنه که دنبالش راه بیفتی و مصرانه دنبال کنی
در پایان داستان اشکهام رو صورتم چکید وقتی زن البرت بدبخت امده بود دنبال جنازه شوهرش و وقتی مری گیج و منگ بود باور نمیکرد هری .. هری عزیزش مرده باشه اون هم این طور به دست کوبایی ها.......

My favorite Hemingway story I have read so far. Harry Morgan a new nonsense guy who by no fault of his own gets involved more and more in the criminal world. Set in the 1930s Havana and Key West Harry has a run of bad luck. The story is about economic inequality and class conflict.

Harry as an ordinary working man who is Captain of a fishing boat in the Depression Era. A wealthy customer doesn’t pay him and he is left destitute with few options. He is forced by economic forces into the black-market activity of running contraband between Cuba and Florida. The story tracks his activities with circumstances getting worse and worse.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Harry during one run gets into a firefight and ends up losing his arm. Then his boat is impounded. Later he has a shootout with some Cuban bank robbers where he is mortally wounded. The story is brutal in its portrayal of the have’s and their economic power and the have nots in this abject poverty. Not much has changed!

Or To Like or Like Not. And the answer is CLEARLY HAVE NOT.

And that's because we are dealing with a true hotchpotch of unpleasant characters, various styles, mixed and unrelated facts and NOT EVEN ONE spiritual word. The characters are Bukowskian drunkards and scoundrels, the bar fights have no logic at all, the love plots are poor, the politics are out of place.

So, the second undeserved star is JUST a little sign of respect...

Film director Howard Hawks was once quoted as saying that Hemingway thought this novel was "a bunch of junk." If that is true, I agree with Hemingway.

The moral of this story, if I am to believe what the back of the book tells me (I borrowed this from my parents and the print edition is rather old) is that "...even the most honest and courageous- if naive- man can be completely corrupted, debased, and finally defeated by sheer force of circumstance or financial bad luck." Not a bad thing to reiterate, but it's a bit hard to take seriously in the context of the novel when the main character quite literally never once in the entire book shows a shred of honesty or courage, even before things go sour for him. His day job is running contraband from Cuba and Florida, for god's sake, and he only gets worse from the book's opening chapter, in which he takes a job smuggling Chinese immigrants into the country and- upon completing the job- kills their leader for no reason other than sheer, unfounded paranoia. How, exactly, he had "no other choice" to do this is never really stated, nor is it made clear in any other of the dubious circumstances he ends up in. The book itself isn't poorly written, and I do like Hemmingway's frantic and urgent narrative style, but any underlying moral this book attempts to deliver was rendered void to me by awful, unsympathetic characters.

Another thing: while I tried to view the author and this book as simply being products of their time as best as I could, I ultimately wasn't sure whether I should be bemused or irked at how he liberally threw around ethnic slurs right and left, yet was apparently squeamish about printing "shit" without blocking out the last three letters. Maybe it was the publisher's doing and not his own, but come on.

پشیمونم که ترجمه ش رو خوندم. مخصوصا ترجمه ی خجسته کیهان، که قبلا ازش به سوی فانوس دریایی رو خونده بودم و بهم ثابت شده بود کارشو درست بلد نیست
این کتاب یه داستان خیلی هیجان انگیز داشت. قهرمان اصلی، مثل قهرمان پیرمرد و دریا، یه شخصیت خونسرد و مقاومه
کتاب راوی های مختلفی داره
و همینطور که از عنوانش معلومه، تم غالبش اختلاف طبقاتی و اجتماعیه با یه تاچ کمونیسم

هي الرواية الثانية ل هيمنجواي و التي تم تنقيحها اثناء اشتراكه في الحرب الاهلية بأسبانيا ، رواية عن الكساد العظيم كتبت في ذروة نشاط اليسار السياسي بقلم هيمنجواي ... رواية نتوقع منها الكثير

نتوقع منها روح ثورية ، ايجابية ، حالمة ، تحمل بذور الامل لكننا نتفاجئ -مفاجأة سارة ان شئت- ان العمل لا يحمل ابدا بذور التفاؤل البسيط الساذج هذا ، بل جرعات مركزة متتالية من اليأس و الفشل و الرضوخ ... و شخصيات هيمنجواي تقاسي دون ان تشكو حتي لنفسها ، و تشعر دائما انها تستحق عذاباتها تلك ، و ترى مجهودها يضيع سدى في لا مبالاة مدهشة

نتفاجئ ان في قلب النضال الثورى المتحرر نرى ان هيمنجواي يتوقع الفشل لحركات التقدم و التحرر ، و هو من الوهلة الاولي يضعنا في قلب المأساة بلا مواربة او تمهيد و يطالبنا بالتحمل

اما كيف جعل هيمنجواي من شخصيته الرئيسيه "هارى مورجان" قبطان المركب المنحوس هو بطل العمل فه. عملية في حد ذاتها مثيرة للاهتمام

فنتابع تارة "هارى مورجان" قبطان شريف خائف وجل في لقطة ، و مهرب ميت القلب في اخرى ...محب للسلام و اب اسرة قلق علي مستقبلهم في لحظة ، و قاتل بدم بارد و غير مكترث عاطفيا ببناته او زوجته في اخرى ...رجل اعمال مهتم بطاقمه و يقدمهم علي نفسه محبا و معطاء في مشهد ، و ذئب متوحد جشع في اخر

و التغييرات تلك تتابع في سهولة و سلاسة مدهشة و بدون مقدمات احيانا ... سهولة كتلك التي قدم فيها هيمنجواي الحادثة التي ستغيير حياة هارى الي الابد فنرى لهجة المؤلف تكتسب حياد صامت بارد حاد تجاهه كل المأساة و كل تفاصيلها

و نحب ان ننوه هنا ان لمحة من الرائعة "العجوز و البحر" نستطيع ان نراها هنا في تلك القصة المبكرة نسبيا للكاتب الامريكي الحامل لنوبل و ان استهان بها

لكن الايقاع السريع الشيق و اسلوب اللقطات الخاطفة خاصة فصل الحادثة الذى شاهدنا فيه تكثييف مدهش ، الايقاع ذلك يجذبنا من بداية القصة الي نهايتها رغم الغياب المفاجئ -و احيانا غير المبرر- لبطلنا الاصلي "هارى مورجان" و دخولنا في قصص موازية تعترف صاحبة تلك الكلمات انها لم تدرك مغزى بعضها من الاصل

اسلوب هيمنجواي هذا الذى سيكمل تطوره في قصصه الاكثر نضجا من تلك التي بين ايدينا ... و الذى فاز لصاحبه بمكانة لم تستطيع تلك الرصاصة التي استقرت في رأسه ان تفقده اياها

Florida Keys. 1937. Harry Morgan, husband to a former prostitute, disappointed father, erstwhile deep sea fishing guide. Broke. Desperate. Surrounded by wasted, depressed, angry, hopeless characters. Welcome to Hemingway.

How can a protagonist who refers to blacks as "niggers", who writes his own moral code with little regard for law or ethics, who regrets his daughters, and who has a dismal outlook on life even on his best days get under your skin? How can a writer, whose phrases are bleak, whose characters are mean, and who has a dismal outlook on life even on his best days make you tremble? Welcome to Hemingway.

When I turned the final page, I couldn't decide if this was one of the most awful stories I'd read or one of the most brilliant. So, I settled on both as true. The story is dark, wet, brutal, discombobulating. The writing is dark, wet, brutal and freaking amazing. The narrative shifts from Harry as first person narrator, allowing the reader to become intimately connected to the "have-nots"- Harry, his wife and family, his hired-as-needed crew- to the third person omniscient, forcing us to observe at a distance the "haves"- the idle rich and educated who moor their yachts and slum at the bars with the locals. In between is Harry's story told in third-person narrative. This manipulation of style breaks the reader from being within the story to observing it, as if to say we're no longer a part of what Harry is doing, we're just watching him from a seat off-stage...

Fortunately, the writing is classic Hemingway- spare and powerful and so, so sad. The scene between Harry and his wife, Marie, is tender and tragic, juxtaposing a black-hearted opportunist with a flawed but loving man. Unfortunately, the writing is classic Hemingway: every character sounds exactly alike, the flow, regardless of point of view, does not change. Although the causes of misery vary between characters, their responses are identical: caustic and wretched. Only Marie Morgan shows spirit and vulnerability. And lest we think Hemingway is getting soft, he cleaves away her dignity in one short scene. At least he leaves her ignorant of the insult.

The disjointed narrative reads like two novellas joined by loosely-intersecting characters and the story suffers from the relentless grind of depravity. There is no redemption, no growth, no character transformation. In the bleak era during which this was written- the Depression- perhaps the tone fit the times.

This was Hemingway's first long work after an eight-year hiatus. It feels like a giant fuck-you by Hemingway to the literary establishment and to his readers. Although Harry Morgan declares "A man.. one man alone ain't got...No man alone now... No matter how a man alone ain't got no bloody--chance." To Have and Have Not reads very much like a man who has declared himself to be alone, and not giving a damn.

داستان خوبیه، مخصوصاً قسمتی که مربوط به هری مورگانه. ولی اگه داستان رو متمرکزتر می کرد، خیلی بهتر در میومد. داستان به ماجرای شخصیت های متفاوتی می پردازه که چندان تأثیری در داستان ندارن و به ر احتی می شه حذفشون کرد، مثل نویسنده و زنش و پرفسور که تقریباً هیچ ارتباطی با بدنه ی اصلی داستان ندارن.
یکی هم تغییر زاویه ی دید داستانه که چندجا خوب و به جاست، ولی چند جا به نظر نا متناسب میاد.

در آخر، لازم به گفتن نیست که فیلم درخشان "ناخدا خورشید"، اقتباسی آزاد از این داستانه.

Realy high literally style.
With alot of decent descriptions.
But the reader would be missed to infer whats the main lesson because the author had tried not to judge and say his own ideas in this book.The main thing that I have learned from this book was that love can cause everything.Sometimes people who loves sb does anything to make (in this book the t main character`s wife)satisfied.That caused his death.And how his wife could survive living without him...
کتابی پر از توصیفات ساده و پربار از اصطلاحات کاملا ادبی.
روزمرگی و توصیفات جزیی که گاهی باعث بی حوصله کردن خواننده میشد در عین حال زیبا بود.مهم ترین نکته ای که توجه من رو جلب کرد این بود که نویسنده هیچ قضاوتی راجع به رفتاد شخصیت ها بیان نکرده بود و هیچ اثری از اعتقادات شخصی در کتاب نبود.درسی که حس کردم این کتاب به من داد این بود که عشق خطیره.عاشق گاهی به خاطر خوش حال کردن معشوق هر کاری می کنه.چه بسا تامین مادیات باشه و ریسکی که به قیمت زندگیش تموم شه و صفحات پایانی کتاب بعد از مرگ هری مورگان (شخصیت اصلی ) به این پرداخته که همسرش چطوری میتونه از غم از دست دادنش نجات پیدا کنه و ادانه بده به زندگی ای بی روح بی معنا...
