Re-read. One of the weaker Hemingway novels. Despite some flourishes and passages of exquisite writing, overall the short book feels disjointed, with the plot and viewpoint jumping around. And central character Harry Morgan, while having some of the characteristics of a Hemingway hero, is undoubtedly racist, even measured against the standards of the time, and a particularly unpleasant anti-hero.

Set in the Florida Keys during the Depression years, Harry Morgan is trying to make a living for his family by running charter fishing cruises. When he gets screwed over badly by his latest client, Harry turns to less reputable--and much more dangerous-- ways of making a living.

Parts of this book were beautifully crafted, with Hemingway's trademark dialog and gritty, edge-of-the-seat action. The parts contrasting this with how the rich and famous were living in the Keys were not as successful or interesting to me but necessary to tie in with the theme of 'the haves and the have nots.' Shades of The Great Gatsby there. Overall, I'm glad that I read this book but it will not be numbered among my favorite Hemingway stories.

Fico com a sensação de que Hemingway não sabia exactamente que rumo dar ao livro e que terá, por isso, optado por incluir trechos de histórias paralelas, que pouco se relacionam e acrescentam à principal. Chegam a ser mais interessantes as divagações aleatórias das últimas páginas acerca de pessoas desconhecidas do que os azares de Harry Morgan, que tanto parecia ter para dar ao enredo inicialmente. Melhor seria se as tivesse dividido em pequenos contos, como em As Neves de Kilimanjaro e outras histórias.

پنجمین اثری که از همینگوی خوندم و متاسفانه پایان تلخی داشت مثل "وداع با اسلحه" و "زنگ‌ها برای که به صدا درمی‌آیند". ولی با این تفاوت که این داستان درباره جنگ نبود. شخصیت اصلی "هری مورگان" یک ناخداست که با قایقش مشروبات الکلی قاچاق می‌کنه و وقتی مشکلات مالیش زیاد می‌شه به قاچاق انسان هم نه نمی‌گه.
همینگوی در این اثر تلخ هم طنزهای کلامیشو داره و به خاطر همینه که دوستش دارم ♡

Considered Hemmingway’s worst- To Have and Have Not is almost shocking to read with modern eyes. Either he was a racist pig- likely; or he was documenting the sad state of racial affairs in the 1930’s when this was written- unlikely- but true, however inadvertedly. Even if I give him the benefit of the doubt, he probably was showing his ass as well.

The first section of this decidedly short novel is told from Harry Morgan’s POV. I found the first section to be the most engaging, although this is where the majority of derogatory racial epithets show up. For some reason the rest of the novel seems to fall apart without Harry’s narration- which says something about the character. Harry is a gruff, typical don't show your emotions 30’s man, just trying to get by. When a man stiffs Harry after chartering his boat, Harry decides to take on the riskier, but more profitable, business of ferrying people and contraband, from Cuba to Florida and back again. Yeah, that’s trouble. And Harry’s life turns to crapola from that day forward.

The book is nothing at all like the iconic Bogie and Bacall version of it. (“Ya know how to whistle donchya? You just put your lips together and blow.”)

Rumor has it, the producer of the movie was on a boat one day with Hemingway and informed the author he needs to make more money to support the lifestyle he had become accustomed to, attempting to persuade Hemmingway to make one of his novels into a movie. “When Hemingway indicated no interest in Hawks's proposal, the filmmaker reportedly responded by boasting that he could make a film out of Hemingway's worst book, which Hawks felt was To Have and Have Not.” The end result is the movie being very little like the book- and probably overshadowing it.

Despite it’s flaws, I liked reading TH&HN. Not for the story, which is tragic to say the least, but for Hemingway’s style.

Okay, confession time. I never finished a Hemingway before. When I was a teenager I picked up The Sun Also Rises, but never got into it. Never picked him up again-until now. After reading TH&HN, and discovering I think I may like his style- I think I’m gonna give the racist pig another shot. Say what you will about him as a person, he had what I call “the juice”. That certain something that makes a person sparkle when they do what they do. Makes him worth investigating some more in my eyes. I think I'm going to try A Moveable Feast. I've been dying to read it ever since Nick Cage extolled Hemingway's virtues in City of Angels.

I can’t say I reccomend TH&HN. But it may be fun to read the first 25 pages or so. Everyone needs to be reminded the MLK really did make a difference.

Hemingway's prose is always engaging and powerful. He captures the desperation of Harry Morgan during the depression as he turns to drug and human smuggling to help his family survive. The beginning of the story captured my interest. There are some secondary characters and stories that, though descriptive and interesting, seem at times disjointed.

I was uncomfortable with the main character's use of racial epithets; I've never encountered people who use those words. But it's not the first book I've encountered with such language....so it must represent some people....fortunately, I don't know such people. Overall, this was an interesting read.

Коли мене питали про що книжка, відповідала, що роман про контрабандистів на Кубі. Але попри зовнішню сюжетність і динаміку проступають набагато глибші питання. Чи легко перейти межу і стати злочинцем? На що ти підеш заради власної родини? Чи є місце дружбі, коли на кону виживання?
Читається майже на одному подиху. Багато дій головного героя дивували все більше з кожним розділом. Деякі сюжетні лінії здавались зайвими, але водночас підкреслювали соціальну прірву життя місцевих кубинців, що мають утримувати родину за 20 доларів на місяць, та багатих яхтсменів, сумління яких не таке вже й чисте і яким спокійний сон не загрожує.

I'm not so sure about To Have and Have Not. Nothing is quite 'great' about it. The iconic Cuban scenery and lifestyle is unusually hollow, especially considering how excellenty Hemmingway uses it in The Old Man and the Sea, the characters are dull, not excitable, and not likeable - which isn't necessarily a problem but with not much else going for this book it becomes one - and the writing style just doesn't seem to work here.

The story begins strongly, as we learn in Hemmingway's immediate style, about the character of Henry Morgan and his work. His boat has been chartered by a fellow who just can't seem to catch a fish, and they are accompanied by a couple others, all of which are interesting characters in their own way, but they only remain a party very briefly. However, this simple nature of this story does not continue, which is, perhaps, a shame. The story remains somewhat intriguing for about half of the book, but it always feels like something more will come. The events that do come are fine and are well written in the moment, however the aftermath of them is bizarre.

A major issue was the introduction of quite meagre characters that do not hold much significance. The Gordons for example, what on earth was that about? Where was their relevance to the central story? I suppose the book uses their story to tie into what it becomes - about despair, marital agony, and how you move your life forward in such a lonely world. But, for me, the themes are touched on too weakly, yet too abruptly, and without much profoundness.

I also did not like way the book was written as it jumped from anonymous commentator to a random new character's perspective, to Henry's perspective, to commentator but with bits of internal dialogue from other random characters never seen again. It was a mess.

These two main concerns ultimately result in a disjointed story that is hard to keep interest in.

By the end everything felt inevitable and I didn't care for much of the consequences. I feel almost like Richard Gordon wandering the streets not knowing where he's going next as I finished this book - leaving with a state of emptiness.

دوستانِ گرانقدر، این کتاب از 25 فصل و 206 صفحه تشکیل شده است.. از این داستان چنیدن فیلم اقتباسی ساخته شده است.. ولی هیچکدام به متن و داستانِ اصلی پایبند نبوده اند.. این داستان حولِ محورِ بدبختی و تنگدستی میچرخد.. اینکه انسانها به دلیلِ مشکلاتِ مالی ممکن است دست به هر کاری بزنند و حتی جانشان را به پایِ آن بگذارند.. نوعی فقر و تنگدستی که هیچ ارتباطی با تلاش و کوششِ انجام شده ندارد.. چراکه نظام و حکومتها جوری پایه ریزی شده اند که ضعیف و فقیر، با تلاش و کوشش به سختی میتوانند سری در میانِ سرها بلند کنند و یا باید چاشنیِ شانس با آنها همراه باشد و یا خلافی انجام دهند، بلکه از طبقۀ فقیر و ضعیفِ جامعه، کمی فاصله بگیرند.. خلاصه سخن از رنج و فلاکتِ طبقه ای است که حتی در سنینِ بالا نیز باید نگرانِ خورد و خوراک و جایِ خوابِ خود و خانواده باشند که نمونۀ چنین موضوعی را این روزها به وفور در ایرانِ خودمان شاهد هستیم............ شخصیتِ اصلی داستان «هری مورگان» 47 یا 48 ساله است.. هری آمریکایست و در فلوریدا زندگی میکند و قایقی تفریحی دارد که آن را برایِ گردش در دریا و ماهیگیری به توریستها اجاره میدهد... و البته بینِ فلوریدا و هاوانا در رفت و آمد است و هر کاری که به او پیشنهاد میدهند اگر پولِ خوبی در آن باشد و درسر نداشته باشد، قبول میکند.. هری سری نترس دارد و برایِ خانوده هر کاری میکند.. او علاقه ای به سیاست و اینجور مسائل ندارد.. همسری به نام «ماری» و دو دختر دارد و درکل زندگیِ آرامی را میگذراند و زنش با همه چیزِ او میسازد.. داستان در زمانی رخ میدهد که تفکراتِ خطرناکِ کمونیستی همچون سمی کشنده و ویروسی ویرانگر، در آمریکایِ شمالی و جنوبی نفوذ کرده و شورش هایِ کارگری و شبه انقلاب و آشوب را موجب شده است.. هری به خاطرِ مشکلاتِ مالی مجبور میشود بر رویِ قوانینی که برای خود دارد، پا گذاشته و دست به کارهایِ غیرقانونی بزند... کار را با دلال هایِ انسان و قاچاقِ چینی ها و خطرکردن تا جایی که بازویش را از دست بدهد، آغاز میکند و بعد به سراغِ قاچاقِ مشروباتِ الکلی رفته و قایقش توقیف میشود. قایقی که حکمِ تنها منبعِ درآمدش را دارد..... و امّا در ادامۀ داستان، هری اسیرِ ماجراجوییِ خطرناکِ گروهکِ انقلابیِ کوبایی ها میشود.. کوبایی هایی که استالینِ وحشی و دزد را الگویِ خود قرار داده و حال با سرقتِ پول از بانک، همراه با اسلحه در قایق کنارِ هری مورگان هستند.. هری اسیرِ این کوبایی ها در قایق است و دوستش را کشته اند و حال باید تصمیم بگیرد که در این وضعیت چه کاری انجام دهد..... عزیزانم، بهتر است خودتان این داستان را بخوانید و از سرانجامِ غم انگیز آن آگاه شوید

Meh.

It starts very strongly -- good character development, definite Hemingway commentary tone -- lots of Hemingway Southern Hemisphere fun in Cuba.

But midway -- he just sort of wanders off and starts pointing his Hemingway at anything that moves. He introduces secondary and tertiary characters with incredible detail, but with no discernible purpose.

It's not one of his better books, and ends leaving you wondering how much better it would have been if the writing from about the second third on was more substantially interconnected.

What's great about this book, if you want to enjoy it/study it/comment on it -- is that he really does scatter shot his Hemingway. You could tear out just about any page of this book, and it's pure him. His meaningless meandering details are done with true depth and edge ... but they really never imbue the reader with any concern for the characters that he sort of follows randomly.

It would be the equivalent of going to a train station, closing your eyes, opening them, writing something about the first person you see, closing them for another hour, opening them again, writing about the first person you see and so on ... but meanwhile, there's a CRITICAL character standing off to the side smoking a cigarette doing absolutely nothing.

Go read The Old Man and the Sea -- or "For Whom the Bell Tolls" ... leave this for the poor sots at school who are forced to read everything by him.

Ο πρώτος Χέμινγουεϊ που διαβάζω και είμαι αρκετά ευχαριστημέ��ος με δεδομένο ότι αυτό είναι το πιο «αδύναμο» έργο του, καθώς λέγεται. Είμαστε στα 1934. Κεντρικός ήρωας είναι ο Χάρι Μόργκαν, ένας ψαράς, ιδιοκτήτης καϊκιού, που διαμένει στη Φλόριντα και νοικιάζει το καΐκι του σε τουρίστες που θέλουν να ψαρέψουν. Οι δουλειές πλέον δεν είναι πολλές εξαιτίας της Μεγάλης Ύφεσης και τα χρήματα βγαίνουν δύσκολα με τις νόμιμες εργασίες (πολλές φορές ΚΑΙ με τις παράνομες καθώς η ποτοαπαγόρευση έχει αρθεί και η μεταφορά αλκόολ από και προς την Κούβα είναι ασύμφορη και δεν υπάρχει ζήτηση). Από τους τουρίστες ο Χάρι δεν βλέπει σωτηρία καθώς τον εξαπατούν πολλάκις και αποφασίζει για να μπορέσει να θρέψει τη γυναίκα και τις τρεις κόρες του να επιδοθεί σε μεταφορά λαθρομεταναστών. Αυτή η εργασία θα τον βάλει πολλές φορές σε μπελάδες με ολέθριες συνέπειες. Το έργο αποτελείται από τρία μέρη. Χάρι Μόργκαν [Άνοιξη, Φθινόπωρο, Χειμώνας] και ανταποκρίνεται και στις εποχές του χρόνου επιφανειακά αλλά και στα στάδια της ζωής του Χάρι που γνωρίζει συνεχώς την παρακμή όπως η φύση με τις αντίστοιχες εποχές. Τα δύο πρώτα μέρη κυλούν ομαλά και ασχολούμαστε μόνο με τον Χάρι, με μοναδική διαφορά ότι αλλάζει η αφήγηση και από πρωτοπρόσωπη γίνεται τριτοπρόσωπη με εστίαση βέβαια πάλι στις δραστηριότητες του Μόργκαν ίσως με μικρές παρεκβάσεις που να δικαιολογούν τον «παντογνώστη» αφηγητή.

Στο τρίτο μέρος όμως τα πράγματα περιπλέκονται. Εκτός από την κύρια ιστορία του Μόργκαν με την ανάληψη μεταφοράς τεσσάρων ανδρών στην Κούβα, η αφήγηση περιπλέκεται και παρουσιάζεται από τα μάτια ενός φίλου του Χάρι, της γυναίκας του καθώς γίνεται και παρεμβολή διαφόρων δευτερευόντων ηρώων και ιστοριών, οι οποίες μοιάζουν σαν διηγήματα μέσα στο μυθιστόρημα. Αυτές οι ιστορίες αφορούν κυρίως ανθρώπους της τάξεως των πλουσίων οι οποίοι έχουν τα κότερά τους και ασχολούνται με προβλήματα που ουδεμία σχέση έχουν με τα πραγματικά βασανιστήρια της πείνας και της εξαθλίωσης που βιώνουν χαρακτήρες όπως ο Χάρι, ο Άλμπερτ και διάφοροι συμμετέχοντες στην ιστορία που ζουν μέσα στην εξαθλίωση.

Εδώ έγκειται και ο πυρήνας του έργου. Να έχεις και να μην έχεις, γιατί στον κόσμο αυτό υπάρχουν οι έχοντες και οι μη-έχοντες, με τους δεύτερους να ξεπερνούν αριθμητικά τους πρώτους σε έναν μεγάλο βαθμό, με αποτέλεσμα να βυθίζονται σε έναν βούρκο που δεν θυμίζει ανθρώπινο ον αλλά ζώο, καθώς είναι καταδικασμένοι στην αθλιότητα και η μόνη τους παρηγοριά είναι η φτηνή μπίρα και οι ξυλοδαρμοί μεταξύ τους. Ο Χέμινγουεϊ, με σοσιαλιστικές πεποιθήσεις, πλάθει έναν κόσμο στο βιβλίο του όπως τον βλέπει ο ίδιος στον περίγυρό του, γεμάτο εξαθλιωμένους ανθρώπους με τους έχοντες να πατάνε επί των πτωμάτων τους και να αναλώνονται σε ανούσια ερωτικά παιχνιδάκια και σε επιχειρήσεις που βγάζουν εκατομμύρια· και αυτός ο κόσμος είναι πέρα για πέρα αληθινός, είναι ο κόσμος του χθες και του σήμερα όπου ένας άντρας μόνος του δεν τα βγάζει πέρα. Μόνος του δεν μπορεί. Ό,τι και να κάνει, ένας άντρας μόνος του δεν έχει καμιά γαμημένη ελπίδα όπως λέει ο Μόργκαν (σ. 226, εκδ. Καστανιώτη). Δε δίνει περιθώρια αλλαγών σε αυτήν την ντετερμινιστική άποψη καθώς όποιος τολμήσει να ανελιχθεί πρέπει να το κάνει με παράνομα μέσα και έτσι αναλίσκεται (Μπι-Λιπς) από το ίδιο το σύστημα. Εντέλει ένα βιβλίο που αξίζει παρά τα όποια ελαττώματά του, καθώς αντικατοπτρίζει μια εποχή μέσα από τα μάτια ενός συγγραφέα-παρατηρητή που εξοργίζεται με το θέαμα και δρά γράφοντας.

To Have and Have Not is a tale of discontentment, death, and desperation in the Depression-Era Florida Keys. Definitely one of Hemingway's more detached and disjointed novels, but told in typical style with a backdrop he knows intimately. He wrote it after registering distaste from critics and readers alike that he was writing gallivanting tales of international playboyhood while the country was in deep socioeconomic turmoil. They called him out of touch. He responded with this novel. Interestingly, this was Hemingway's only novel set in the United States (not continental at that), although many of his early short stories were.

Many goodreads reviewers seem to find fault with the menagerie of characters Hemingway introduces and delves partially into, I found it quite the opposite: the smattering characterizations of Conchs (Key West locals), Cubans, and tourists turn the story into a series of vignettes of sorts which contrast to form an apathetic requiem for a country the way it was and the lifestyles and ideals which went along with it.

I was finally moved to thinking this was great book very close to the end when an old, rich, tax-evading tertiary character had a long (and unrelated) thought monologue considering suicide to remedy the empty feeling he felt in comparison to the sexual vitality he once had. I couldn't help but think it was likely sentiments which Hemingway himself shared towards the end of his life. As always, he put a tremendous reflection of himself throughout the book.

A must read for Hemingway fans.
