I loved Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s book The Shadow of the Wind, so I was eager to try some more of his works. I knew this was one of his Young Adult books so I didn’t expect the same level as excitement from this book, but I probably did expect a lot more. While The Prince of Mist is full of adventure, magic and gothic themes, I kind of felt like there was a lot missing from the story and maybe it was rushed a little too much. I understand the idea of having short books for the Young Adults but this book kind of left me hanging, with no sense of closure, I know its is setting up for the next book in the series, I just was expecting it to feel like Max’s adventure with the prince of mist was over; and I didn’t feel that at all. Zafón is a really great writer and this is more for a younger audience; I’m glad I read this but I would of liked more from it.

Esta historia, nos cuenta como por culpa de la guerra, la familia Carver, se muda a un pueblo en la costa para cambiar de vida y alejarse de la ciudad y el horror que provoca. Se mudan a una casita en la playa a la que perteneció a la familia Feischmann, los cuales tenían un hijo, Jacob, que murió con tan solo cinco años, todo esto traerá consecuencias a los Carver.

Max es el hijo de la nuestra familia, y protagonista de la obra, que desde el primer momento que llegan a ese pueblo intuye que algo va mal y que ocurren cosas extrañas, desde el reloj de la estación de tren, un gato de ojos dorados que les persigue, un jardín con una estrella de seis puntas, un jardín con estatuas detrás de la casa...

Max conocerá a un chico del pueblo, Roland, y entre los dos y su hermana mayor, Alicia, se encontraran envueltos en una terrorífica historia que tuvo lugar muchos años atrás y que intentaran resolver.

La premisa del libro para mi es magnifica, partiendo de una casa "encantada" con estatuas, cementerios, un niño muerto... Toda la historia que tiene el libro detrás hace que te enganche y que te los leas en un suspiro, y no únicamente porque sea corto.

Los personajes me han gustado mucho, nuestro protagonista, es un niño muy curioso, amable, que quiere a su familia (sobretodo a su hermana) por encima de todo. Roland, es el nieto del farero, un chico muy risueño y al que yo personalmente le cogi cariño muy rápido. Y Alicia, la hermana mayor de Max, con una personalidad muy diferente, muy callada, tímida y distante.

La pluma de Zafon, como siempre es una maravilla, crea una historia que te transmite el miedo que tienen los personajes, el ambiente que crea hace que te lo imagines y hasta en algunos momentos sientas escalofríos.

La novela tiene algo sobrenatural, mágico, oscuro, misterioso, que consigue que te estremezcas y que te sumergas en la historia, una historia de amistad, una historia que hace que recuerdes tus días de juventud, con la bicicleta, el verano en el pueblo y su rio... tenemos también hasta un toque de romance juvenil, de esos de verano.

Una novela que recomiendo leer, tanto a gente adulta como gente juvenil porque te va dejar sin palabras y con ganas incluso de saber más sobre este gran misterio. Super recomendada igual que todos los libros de este gran autor.

Esta novela la leí hace un par de años y no me impacto tanto. Recientemente me leí la tetralogía del cementerio de los libros olvidados, la cual me fascinó y quise darle una nueva oportunidad a los dos libros juveniles que había leído de Zafón y viéndola con una nueva perspectiva debo reconocer que el Príncipe de la Niebla es una historia muy buena, obviamente no a la altura de su tetralogía prima, pero tiene suficiente material, para crear esa atmósfera de misterio, suspenso romance y melancolía que tanto lo caracteriza.
Es una obra literaria junto con sus otras 3 obras "infantiles" son como su propio autor indica, especialmente dirigidas a jóvenes entre 9 y 99 años.

Although this isn't a novel as famous as the Shadow of the Wind, The Prince of Mist was the book that allowed me to discover Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I still remember reading it one summer when I was 12; that story strucks me very deeply. The mixture of mystery and terror of the book is ideal for a young reader (or not so young) who wants to enter the dark world of mystery and terror novels.

Who would have thought that Zafon, best known for The Shadow of the Wind and The Angel’s Game, started his writing life as a young adult author? After he became famous his YA books were published in English translation, some of which had won YA awards in Spain. I picked it up without knowing it was a YA book.

The story is a spooky mystery based around the main character, a pre-teen boy, his older sister and the boy’s older friend. It is set in a coastal village in Spain just before WW II. So within the first few pages we have a railway station clock running backwards. And I thought – “I get it – Harry Potter!” And the story is Harry Potterish.



With the war pending, the boy’s father decides to move the family out of the big city to a coastal village. At first the family is unaware that the last boy who lived in that house drowned.

We have a sunken ship in shallow water that the kids dive to and pick up treasures; a cemetery of circus freak statues that move and change position; an evil cat that sends a little girl into a coma; an ancient mariner who built his own lighthouse; an old film projector in the basement and old films that start showing current events. Of course the boy’s sister and the older friend fall in love.

You don’t read a YA book for its literary value, so you get some clichés and lame metaphors like this when the boy learns they are going to move: “To him, the news felt like a mad steam train hurtling through a china shop. His mind went blank, his mouth sagged, and his eyes glazed over.” I’m not a YA reader but I thought it was a good story and it kept my interest.



The Spanish author is best known for his Cemetery of Forgotten Books trilogy: The Shadow of the Wind, The Angel's Game and The Prisoner of Heaven. He died in 2020 from cancer at age 55.

This is the first book I've EVER read in Spanish and I didn't struggle with it (after having studied it for roughly 6 months) so I don't really know what that says about the writing, lol. Seriously though, I'm feeling oddly vindicated that conversely, reading novels in German still gives me headaches when I've started learning it at 12 but... My native language is French and I studied Latin, so that helps a lot when Spanish is concerned, I guess.

This said, even though it's shelved as YA on Goodreads, this book very much reads like a Middle-Grade horror story and I'd recommend it to 12 years-olds, despite the somewhat unfinished ending and the insta-love (but the romance aspect is barely present, so it didn't really bother me). I wished I knew going in that there would be a fucking evil clown, though. Ew.

Wow, no me esperaba esto aunque no sé qué esperaba tampoco. Creo que me pasó lo mismo que con La sombra del viento, lo leí sin saber qué esperar y aún así me sorprendió. No es tan bueno como aquel, pero sí un buen primer libro. Tiene sus fallos, pero considerando lo rápido que se lee, lo divertido que es y la historia detrás me parecen pequeños.

Una familia se muda a una casa con una historia trágica, a medida qué pasa el tiempo comienzan a pasar distintos eventos que hacen que Max y Alicia decidan investigar más. Conocen a Ronald, y los tres comentan los miedos que sienten sobre la casa y lo que ahí sucede.

Me gustó mucho. La historia tiene ese toque perturbador para mantener la atención y además con una buena historia detrás. Se me hizo algo similar al primer libro de Ulysses Moore, lo admito. Aunque por las fechas es al revés, el primer libro de Ulysses Moore se parece a este.

Quizá mi mayor problema estuvo en que las mejores partes fueron contadas en diálogos, lo que le quitó un poco de fluidez a la historia. Sin embargo, estoy muy contenta de haberlo leído. Es un libro ágil, con buenos personajes y una buena trama.

Otro aspecto que me gustó es la relación de los hermanos, al inicio parecía bastante cliché, pero me gustó la forma en que se cuidaban y el cómo Max velaba por Alicia. Me recordó a mi hermano que siendo menor siempre me cuida.

Claramente leeré los demás y leeré todo lo que tenga de Carlos Ruiz Zafón, que no sé por qué no lo hice antes considerando lo mucho que me gustó La sombra del viento.

Several scenes early in this book were SO SCARY that I had to put the book down to read something lighter to de-creep myself before I could fall asleep*. So, at least until I start living with other people again, I'm not allowed to read/watch anything scarier than this. :)

So yeah, it's creepy. As soon as the creepiness is explained, I was fine, so it really was just a few early scenes, but I'm an anticipation person and the unknown creeps me out.

Anyway, it's a translated book, and that occasionally shows with awkward turns of phrase. But there are also some really lovely phrases that impressed me so much that I had to grab a pen. Really beautiful writing at times.

I liked that this combined a nonspecific location with historical fiction and the paranormal element. There's a lot going here.

And I'll put it on my maybe booktalk list for next time I hit the middle schools.





*One of those nights, I put down this book to look up and see a giant spider (I would include a picture, but researching exactly which type is creeping me out too much) on my ceiling. My life is so hard.
