Amma əvvəl də qeyd etdiyim kimi hər şey həddən artıq gec baş verir. Kitabın ilk iki bölməsi geridə qalmışdı və mən artıq İbn Sinanın adının sadəcə baş qəhrəman həkimlik öyrənmək istəyir deyə çəkildiyini düşünməyə başlamışdım. Və aha.. hardasa üçdən sonra doğurdan da gedib çatır. (bu informasiyanı spoyler saymıram, çünki kitabın adı İbn Sinanın şagirdidir.(görəsən niyə??)) Kitabın trilogiya olduğu qeyd edilib, amma digər hissələri oxumağa həvəs yaranmadı. Niyəsə oxuduğum mənbədə janr olaraq tarixi kitab adlandırılıb. (niyə???) Mən self-motivation olaraq anmaq istəyirəm. Belə ki, adam kişi kimi yolundan dönmür, öyrənmək üçün əlindən gələni edir. Bilmirəm məsləhət görərdim ya yox, ortabab. Uzaq başı kimsə oxumuşam deyəndə, "ıhım mən də" cavab verəcək tipdəndir. (bu necə şərhdir özüm də anlamadım)

I love historical fiction. I love to learn about religion in historical fiction. I loved this book!
This book takes place during the 11th century in Europe. It is about a Christian man who disguises himself as a Jew in order to go to a Muslim school of Medicine in the Middle East. It was so interesting to learn how these three major religions interacted with each other during that time in history.

There is one problem with the book though: there is a lot of sexually explicit content. Since this book talks about most of the details if Robert Cole's life,it throws that in there as well.

A boy born in London about the year 1000 becomes orphaned at 9 and is apprenticed to a barber-surgeon/traveling entertainer. The boy learns to juggle and play his part, but he wants to learn how to heal people. As an adult his quest takes him across to Persia to the greatest medical university of the time and back again.

Overall, it was a terrific medieval adventure. I did feel it stagnated in the middle, but towards the end it got back on track.

Le voy a dar un 4,5 a esta novela que si eres amante de la ficción histórica, no puedes dejar de leer. Noah Gordon nos trae una historia plagada de intriga, de amor y de Drama. Con una prosa genial, el autor nos transporta a una Inglaterra a principios del siglo XI en el que acompañamos a Rob un niño inglés, cuyo sueño es ser médico. Como toda novela histórica, en la que se suele cumplir el mismo patrón, el cual es crecer junto al personaje principal Noah Gordon nos hace experimentar el crecimiento de este personaje a través de los años y con el viajamos por medio mundo, para intentar conseguir su objetivo: ser un médico.

En definitiva, el médico, es una grandísima novela que te entretendrás de la primera a la última página.

I’m a modern military history buff, and until I read this book I hadn’t had the slightest intrest in medieval social portraits. Well, Noah Gordon opened my eyes. I travelled through medieval Europe with Rob J. Cole (as I would later do with his descendant Shaman in America) all the way to Persia. How people dressed, ate, how they lived, the relationship with the Jewish community. The remarkable writing style ensured that the length of the book merely made it more appealing. The longer I spent reading it, the more I enjoyed it. So much so that I was saddened when the book was drew to its end. Gordon’s ability to bring his characters and era to life has been a source of wonder and inspiration for me. It definitely ranks among my favorite books of all time

Otro libro sobre la edad media que me ha fascinado, pero este como es de médicos todavía más. Me ha encantado el viaje a Persia y todo lo que él aprendió allí.

Vaikystėje dievinau Londono, Verno, Kiplingo knygas, geros nuotykinės knygos nebuvau skaičiusi jau kokius 25+ metus. Tai gal vertinimą kiek nostalgija paveikė.

Hace tiempo que tenía ganas de leerme este libro y no me ha decepcionado. De hecho, me ha enganchado capitulo a capitulo y su lectura es muy amena. La pluma de Noah Gordon y su voz son adictivas y simplemente no tengo palabras para describir lo que este libro me ha producido al leerlo.

La historia de Robert (el protagonista) muestra y enseña lo que uno puede estar dispuesto a sacrificar por cumplir un sueño, en el caso de esta novela de ser un médico y ser alumno de uno de los mejores profesores de medicina del siglo XI, Ibn Sina.

Recomiendo su lectura :D

Sin duda alguna esta debe ser una de las más hermosas novelas históricas que se han escrito, bien sea sobre el periodo específico del que trata, la baja edad media, o sobre cualquier periodo de la historia.

Dos características creo que son la clave de lo que hace a esta novela un clásico instantáneo: el primero es versar sobre la medicina, una maravillosa profesión cuando se practica con la empatía y el amor de Robert J. Cole (o Jesse ben Benjamin) y el segundo es el de llevarnos por un viaje a través de tres religiones y 4 “subcontinentes”, las islas británicas, Europa, Asia y la India.

¡Que cosa tan maravillosa!

The physicist's dilemma similar to the spiritual vocation.
A wonderful work that combines the historical depth of the time it presents, with human and existential dilemmas that work with morals of effort and personal growth, adorning them with the adventures of travel (in the style of Marco Polo) and dazzling landscapes typical of the Middle East. And it takes the opportunity to show the different Christian, Jewish and Islamic customs, to delve into the human and spiritual perspectives, which enriches the work, since it does not see man in a unidimensional way but in an integral way. Here I share several relationships that are presented to me, but I especially like the dilemma of sacrifice versus vocation that we have explored in the life of Soren Kierkegaard and in the works of Juan Valera and Nikos Kazantzakis.

Dilema del médico similar a la vocación espiritual.
Una obra maravillosa que combina la profundidad histórica de la época que presenta, con dilemas humanos y existenciales que trabaja con moralejas de esfuerzo y crecimiento personal, adornándolas con las aventuras del viaje (al estilo de Marco Polo) y paisajes deslumbrantes propios de Medio Oriente. Y aprovecha para mostrar las diferentes costumbres cristianas, judías e islámicas, para profundizar en las perspectivas humanas y espirituales, lo que enriquece la obra, pues no ve al hombre de forma unidimensional sino integral. Acá comparto varias relaciones que se me presentan, pero me gusta especialmente el dilema de sacrificio frente a la vocación que hemos explorado en la vida de Soren Kierkegaard y en las obras de Juan Valera y Nikos Kazantzakis.

It took me 4.5 months to read this book, since it's the one I've been reading a page or two at a time on my phone whenever I find myself waiting around and needing a book to read. The style of The Physician made it a good one to savor in such a way. It's going to be really strange reading about someone else now when I find myself waiting, which happens a lot by the way.

Wow, this story really covers a lot of ground - literally. It starts out with a young orphan in the early 11th century who develops a yearning to improve his medical knowledge. This desire takes him from Britain to Europe, Persia, and as far as India. Rob is a remarkable man for his time, and it is heartbreaking at times to see him struggle and experience terrible setbacks.

Mostly, though, it's a hopeful tale of learning and compassion, of creative solutions to the closed-mindedness of the time period. It also highlights the religious prejudices of the Middle Ages while inspiring sympathy for individuals of each faith, and portrays each location and people that Rob encounters vividly. The time period really came alive through Rob's travels and relationships. I feel like I lived there.

At one point near the end, I was struck with a sudden fear that it was going to end tragically and I think I could have been induced to throw my phone after all Rob learned and went through. Thankfully it ended well, or as well as it probably could for the mindset of the times, and my phone was spared.
