This may be the best “Christian” book I have ever read!
It never felt condemning or judgmental or harsh. Crucial read for anyone struggling with direction in their! Easy to relate to. Very eye opening and uplifting.
Only small complaint is the overuse of personal stories with very little detail into their lives and the outcome.

This book is like the bible to me. Which is heretical, so I won't say that- but almost. It's life changing. I read it whenever I am insecure or unsure of God's love for me. Read it!

3.5 Star

A very good treatment of Christian thoughts on human significance and value.

Anyone struggling with the idea of purpose, meaning, or whether they have any value would be deeply blessed by this book.

For the general public, I'm not convinced this is a must read classic, but I enjoyed the read, and found several thoughts helpful.

Have read twice, first in a DTS cohort and then again solo while small group was going through the workbook version.

This original book with its own separate workbook included in the back is far superior than the "standalone" workbook, which I wouldn't recommend.

This book goes deep, gets in your face, and is rich with theological truth and scriptural support. It's strong enough to bolster and springboard the believer whether new in their walk or advanced in years with Jesus.

I don’t think I gave this book enough of my brain to fully learn from it but from what I did read, I just didn’t connect with anything the author wrote. I didn’t disagree with anything nor did I think it was pointless. I just think I didn’t learn much of anything, and that is why I rate it so poorly. I should give it another try when I have time to focus on the reading. I read it as part of a discipleship group and had other reading to do so I didn’t do great at focusing my brainpower on this book.

A PRESENTATION OF THE "BIBLICAL SELF-CONCEPT" FOR SELF-WORTH

Robert McGee has written many other books, such as 'The Search for Freedom: Demolishing the Strongholds That Diminish Your Faith, Hope, and Confidence in God,' 'Father Hunger,' etc.

He said about this 1998 book, "The concepts presented in this book have been utilized at our counseling centers and seminars for many years. The results have been so phenomenal that we were compelled to produce this book... This book focuses on how our thoughts affect our emotional, relational, and spiritual development. It is not a textbook for professionals. Instead, the goal of this book is to enable a wide range of people to apply the Scriptures specifically and deeply to real issues in their lives." (Pg. ix, xii) Later, he adds, "This book is dedicated to the process of understanding, applying and experiencing the foundational truths of God's Word... we will discover God's gracious, effective, and permanent solution to our search for significance." (Pg. 29)

He suggests, "Some secular psychologists focus on self-worth with a goal of simply feeling good about ourselves. A biblical self-concept, however, goes far beyond that limited perspective. It is an accurate perception of ourselves, God, and others based on the truths of God's Word... Whether labeled self-esteem or self-worth, the feeling of significance is crucial to man's emotional spiritual, and social stability and is the driving element within the human spirit. Understanding this single need opens the door to understanding our actions and attitudes." (Pg. 12-13)

He continues, "Since the Fall, man has often failed to turn to God for the truth about himself. Instead, he has looked to others to meet his inescapable need for self-worth." (Pg. 23) He says, "We crave fellowship, and intimacy, and we turn to others to meet those needs. The problem with basing our worth on the approval of others is that God is the only One who loves and appreciates us unconditionally. He has provided a solution to the fear of rejection." (Pg. 72)

This book will be of considerable value to Christians interested in books about self-esteem and related topics.

My pastor's wife gave this to me today - it could not have come at a better time. That was not an accident.

Very timely book for me and a lot of rich content. I will re-read this again and again. When my children are older - I'd also like them to read it and start out with a better perspective of true success than I did.
