God has used this book, in conjunction with two others, to help me see so many ways in which I had been living a lie in my Christian life. God has used McGee's words to "shine the light" on my very performance oriented approach to life. God has exposed my fear of failure, my tendency toward perfectionism and many other ways in which I have "bought in" to the Enemy's plan.

This book is rooted in scripture and I found the author's handling of the bible responsible and appropriate. In fact, don't miss that the entire back half of the book is a workbook designed to be worked through at the same time as the chapters are read. There are scriptures galore and many opportunities to sit at the feet of God and prayerfully evaluate what the author says. Never before had I seen such thoughtful, thorough study of such lofty concept as "propitiation" and "justification" (and more) and begun to see just how these concepts applied to my life now in refuting the lies of the enemy. I truly have experienced a transformation that I never would have imagined.

Not just "theoretical," this book has also been extremely practical for me. God has used this book and the things he showed me about my life to keep me from making an enormous mistake by leaving my church. I had no idea just how much my living, reacting, and responding to many things was out of my past until God showed me through this material. In doing this, in working through the material in this book, I have peace in a situation I never could have imagined. In fact, I am resolved, committed, more than I have ever been.

To break free from a performance-oriented approach to life flies in the face of everything in our culture and, sadly enough, in our churches often times. But there is nothing like it. God has transformed my life and my ministry and this book has been pivotal, helping me to understand scriptural teachings that I didn't have clarity about.

I slogged 3/4 of the way through this when I decided that life’s too short to keep reading something that’s not inspiring or enlightening me. There’s plenty of scripture but the theology of just trusting Jesus more doesn’t line up with my personal experience and felt trite and overly simplistic.

This book was a delight to read not just for its writing, which was pretty good (though a bit repetitive at a number of points), but for the incredibly uplifting message that each of its pages brought. More than just a feel-good, self-help with a dose of spirituality, or a self-worth book, this book actually addresses each of those misguided ways I just listed to show how a true biblical view our worth is crafted.

There is much grace given, life spoken, and hope offered to the reader. This doesn't mean that hard truths are avoided or underdeveloped. McGee simply focuses on restoring the reader to a proper perspective of being someone that God loved so much He sent Jesus to die for them. Well, that's an overly simplistic way of stating what the book does. There are so many nuances to it, and very well-developed processes for restoring a godly view of ourselves, that you'll just have to read the book yourself to fully see all it has to offer!

There's a study guide to go along with the book... I wish I would have know that, as it literally goes along with the ready, chapter by chapter. I'll have to go through both to get the most from this book. It's pretty good, so I'm looking forward to 100% completion.

Wonderful book of rich, applicable, life changing counsel, with its foundation in scripture! We cannot change our own lives in our own strength or by our own wisdom! McGee is so good about pointing everything back to the truths of scripture, the truths of Christ and the truths of the gospel and how these truths are the only things that can bring joyful, lasting change to our lives; and teach us our true identity in Christ!

This was a really influential book in my life. I grew a lot in many areas because of the truth about my standing before Christ and what my worth is because of that. So good!

I am very grateful to have read The Search for Significance. From a performance psychology perspective, I was very intrigued with the root causes to performance anxiety that McGee addresses. The book was also very eye opening to see how the root causes can bleed negatively into other areas of life when performance becomes someone’s identity.

McGee structures the book to:
1. Identify the false beliefs (The Performance Trap, The Approval Addict, the Blame Game, Shame)
2. Provide a description of what each false belief is
3. Outline consequences of embodying the mentalities using examples from his counseling profession
4. Describes Jesus’s answer that disarms the false belief, leading to psychological and emotional freedom from the beliefs.

The book was very eye opening for me to not only apply to my own life, but also to see the potential destruction the false beliefs can bring into people’s lives by reading the various examples McGee illustrates. I was also so encouraged by the hope that Jesus’s promises and answers bring to nullify the false beliefs. I 100% agree with Billy Graham’s comment on the front cover, that “The Search for Significance should be read by every Christian.”

I had to read this book for a Seminary class. However, I found it very helpful. The book hits upon various issues a saint will face in his walk with God and spiritual struggles. The part of the book that impacted me the most was the last three chapters that touched upon issues dealing with overcoming the deception we let ourselves fall into over and over and how to come out of that. It is similar to what I have seen in Cognative Therapy, but this touches upon the spiritual renewing of our minds. Very good.

I’ll reread this doing the workbook at the same time. I didn’t realize that was in the second half of the book.
This had helpful content but lacked originality. It’s a great collection of basic truths from the Bible and some Psychology 101 knowledge. Those are great for those entering therapy or counseling. But the book didn’t really offer anything new. I bet the workbook will make it a better, more personal experience.

Very inspirational book. But practical. Deals with how we improve our lives, and still struggle with self worth, guilt, shame and our pasts. Books that tell us that “God can just change you” forget the concept that God has given us the intellectual ability to put the work in to improve our lives.

This book was so insightful into why we react and perceive the world as we do, and was a good reminder of the biblical truths behind following Jesus. I think regardless of where you're at in your faith (even if you don't believe at all) or if you think you don't struggle with self esteem, you will still learn and take something from this book. I listened to the audiobook version on a road trip and all three of us identified with a different chapter, so there really is a chapter for everyone. It's a short read that can definitely be reread and studied for a lifetime. Highly recommend!
