Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a British writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.
Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

Ahhh Sherlock Holmes. A true classic and always excellent. I don't have much to say here to be honest, but this character is widely known and much loved for good reason. It's nuanced, witty and sometimes flamboyant, always fun to follow.

This collection of short stories can get a bit repetitive after a while if you read it all at once, so maybe try spacing it out: it can make the experience more enjoyable.

My quest to read all of the Sherlock Holmes stories continues! And man, what a ride it was. This collection covers 23 short stories that were originally published between 1891 and 1893 in The Strand. I loved A Study in Scarlet and I really enjoyed The Sign of Four, but there is something about the short story format that made me enjoy these even more.

These stories as always follow Doctor Watson as he witnesses and chronicles Holmes' cases. Part of what makes these stories great is that we see the story not through the eyes of the genius detective, but through the eyes of Watson, a man who is constantly baffled by the talents of his friend. The Holmes' stories are nothing like any detective story I have ever read. The actual investigation isn't the most important part, the analytical thinking and the deductive reasoning that Holmes uses are the real gems. Holmes takes seemingly unimportant details and solves his cases mainly by thinking. I just love it so much.

A lot of important characters in the Holmes canon make their debut here, like Irene Adler, Mycroft Holmes and Professor Moriarty. It's weird to think that some of the biggest characters in the numerous TV and movie adaptations are based upon characters that are only present for one short story.

I would really recommend these stories for anyone who is a fan of the detective genre or someone who wants to use his brain muscles and try to find the solution before Holmes does. I only managed to do this for one story, and that's because I live in the 21st century and know a few things about American history that wasn't then known to the general public.

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH I SWEAR. I love Sherlock Holmes so much and again, the original stories do not dissapoint. This book is amazing, Sherlock and Johns friendship is one of the most wholesome amazing things to me and ’The final Problem’ is so sad i almost cried. I’m really excited to continue to read this series.

More than enjoyed it! Love the character! The author created a character that could be easily followed as a model, for perseverance, ambition, courage and ofcourse his ability of details observation, analyse and logic deductions. We see things around us, but we don't observe them. This is the phrase I would like to take with me after reading this book!

Wow. WOW.

I am almost rendered speechless......

Arthur Conan Doyle truly brought THE best and cleverest man into the world when he was writing the stories about Sherlock Holmes. And I am absolutely astounded that he had the creativity to write so many adventures and tales about Holmes's capabilities.

BUT THE ENDINGGGGG WHYYYYYY

These stories are famous for a reason and I love reading them! Every time I read a Sherlock Holmes mystery, I always get caught in the story from the beginning, although some of the more creepy ones aren't great to read when you're home alone and it's dark outside. Yes, I know this from experience. :P Haha, but they are amazing as ever and make me wish I could know more about the intriguing detective.
