Alex is fifteen the year his mother becomes gravely ill with cancer. When Alex's father, John, finds possible treatment for his mom in Texas, Alex and his two sisters are told they'll be sent to stay with their grandmothers. Alex's sisters will stay with their mom's mother, Clara, the normal grandmother, but Alex is to go to stay with Kate, his dad's mother. She is NOT a nurturer. Alex is furious with the decision, saying that Clara will cook and take care of the children, but Kate is excentric. Alex pleads to be allowed to stay with Clara, to no avail and he's sent to New York where he's to meet up with his grandmother prior to a trip to the Amazon.

Kate purposely doesn't meet Alex at the airport and leaves him to find his way to her apartment on his own in New York. His backpack, flute and other possessions are stolen as he tries to find his way o her apartment. Alex finally arrives furious with Kate. Kate says that he learned from the experience. In other words, get over it. Kate is a writer with the International Geographic magazine. Within days, Kate and Alex are part of a crew traveling into the Amazon region. The trip up the Amazon is boring. Alex hates the strange food and spends a great deal of his time hungry. Things become better for him when he meets up with the guide, Cesar Santos, and the guide's daughter, Nadia. Alex and Nadia soon become friends and spend a great deal of time together.

Alex and Nadia are taken/kidnapped by the People of the Mist, a native tribe with the ability to fade into the scenery so efficiently that they are never seen unless they choose to be. This tribe knows nothing of modern civilization. And they are content with their life. For some reason the tribe adopts Nadia and Alex. The two young people are present when the tribe's leader dies, and take on the roles of leaders with specific responsibilities, and each goes on a quest. They discover the mystical city where the beasts live, and Alex travels in search of healing waters that a shaman promises will heal Alex's mother. Nadia goes on a quest of her own. Yes, the story it's magical and exciting.

The purpose of the trip into the Amazon is to search for a Beast that has reportedly killed several people. Also invited along on the trip is a doctor, Omayra Torres who says she plans to vaccinate the natives against measles. But sometimes there are ulterior motives.

The book ends as everyone returns to their homes.
Alex has a story to tell when he gets back to school!
This is the first of a trilogy.

Isabel Allende is one of my favorite authors and I wasn't sure how I would react to a book that seemed to be written in response and on the coat-tails of the multi-series sci-fi/fantasy books such as the Harry Potter series.

This book does not disappoint, but I would not place it anywhere near
the authors more mature and sophisticated books such as "Daughter of Fortune" and "The House of the Spirits." My critisism comes from direct comparison to books that author has already written. If I had read "Kingdom of the Dragon" before anything else, I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more than I did.

Isabell Allende is a great story teller, but I found this story to be too over the top. Rather than containing the plot and exploring the story, the story seems to unravel itself too quickly taking on the components of a typical Hollywood Action Movie. It almost seems overproduced in a way. The story starts off strong, but as more characters are introduced the plot seems to start spinning out of control to the point that I got drawn out of the story. Obviously, this is a work of fiction, but the story would have been a much better read if the author would have kept control of the story instead of letting the story exaggerate itself on its own; particularly towards the end where everything lines up in perfect symetry like the ending of aa Indiana Jones flick.

I finished the book in a day, but it was like eating a Big Mac. I was full, but not very satisfied.
