Emeritus Professor Angus Gellatly's research interests are in cognitive psychology broadly conceived. Over the years they have included memory, reasoning, ergonomics and cognitive development. He has also explored how the sociology of knowledge can be applied to psychological knowledge claims and has been particularly concerned with how attributions of cognitive competence are or are not made to humans, animals and machines.
The focus of his current research interest is in visual cognition. He has had recent ESRC grants to investigate visual attention and visual masking. The aim of this work is to understand the processes involved in deriving a representation of the environment in terms of objects and background, and how these processes influence and are influenced by different forms of visual attention. Or, put more simply, why you usually do but sometimes don't see what's in front of you!

I'm fascinated by the brain and the mind but am not all that scientifically inclined to understand serious neuroscience. This is a good book for middlebrows like me who are fascinated by hard science topics but don't have smarts for hard science. It is a graphic novel of a neuroscience primer. I liked it.

I had previously read 'Introducing evolutionary psychology:..." illustrated by Oscar Zarate and had enjoyed it immensely, so had high hopes form this book. And I must say I was not disappointed!

This is a very accessible introducing to neuroscience, including its history and contemporary explorations in visual, affective and cognitive neuroscience. I thoroughly enjoyed it and finished it one single sitting. Highly recommended!

Fascinating. It's kinda the Cliff Notes version of neuroscience. Seriously, we are so danged fearfully and wonderfully made! I want to understand every bit of us, but I'm pretty sure my head would explode ;0"

Quick overview on the subject of cognitive neuroscience. Somehow still relevant though incomplete 20 years later when I write this review before tossing the poor book out.

If newer editions keep up this is a useful intro.

Great book, a real turn-pager.

I loved how it went through the history of how cultures thought about the brain in the past, the history of theorists on the brain and some of the strange beliefs about the brain (standing on an electrified fish for treatment),lots of information about how the LH and RH work, and details about some really cool disorders that I have never heard of like split brains, Wernicke's vs. Broca's Aphasia, Balint's Syndrome.

The great thing about this book is that throughout the information, there were comics, drawn pictures, and lots of maps to easily understand where the part of the brain they are talking discussing.

Very cool. Read it in about 3.5 hours.
