Ivo Andrić (Serbian Cyrillic: Иво Андрић; born Ivan Andrić) was a Yugoslav novelist, poet and short story writer who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1961. His writings dealt mainly with life in his native Bosnia under Ottoman rule.
Born in Travnik in Austria-Hungary, modern-day Bosnia and Herzegovina, Andrić attended high school in Sarajevo, where he became an active member of several South Slav national youth organizations. Following the assassination of Archduke of Austria Franz Ferdinand in June 1914, Andrić was arrested and imprisoned by the Austro-Hungarian police, who suspected his involvement in the plot. As the authorities were unable to build a strong case against him, he spent much of the war under house arrest, only being released following a general amnesty for such cases in July 1917. After the war, he studied South Slavic history and literature at universities in Zagreb and Graz, eventually attaining his PhD. in Graz in 1924. He worked in the diplomatic service of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia from 1920 to 1923 and again from 1924 to 1941. In 1939, he became Yugoslavia's ambassador to Germany, but his tenure ended in April 1941 with the German-led invasion of his country. Shortly after the invasion, Andrić returned to German-occupied Belgrade. He lived quietly in a friend's apartment for the duration of World War II, in conditions likened by some biographers to house arrest, and wrote some of his most important works, including Na Drini ćuprija (The Bridge on the Drina).
Following the war, Andrić was named to a number of ceremonial posts in Yugoslavia, which had since come under communist rule. In 1961, the Nobel Committee awarded him the Nobel Prize in Literature, selecting him over writers such as J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert Frost, John Steinbeck and E.M. Forster. The Committee cited "the epic force with which he ... traced themes and depicted human destinies drawn from his country's history". Afterwards, Andrić's works found an international audience and were translated into a number of languages. In subsequent years, he received a number of awards in his native country. Andrić's health declined substantially in late 1974 and he died in Belgrade the following March.
In the years following Andrić's death, the Belgrade apartment where he spent much of World War II was converted into a museum and a nearby street corner was named in his honour. A number of other cities in the former Yugoslavia also have streets bearing his name. In 2012, filmmaker Emir Kusturica began construction of an ethno-town in eastern Bosnia that is named after Andrić. As Yugoslavia's only Nobel Prize-winning writer, Andrić was well known and respected in his native country during his lifetime. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, beginning in the 1950s and continuing past the breakup of Yugoslavia, his works have been disparaged by Bosniak literary critics for their supposed anti-Muslim bias. In Croatia, his works had occasionally been blacklisted following Yugoslavia's dissolution in the 1990s, but were rehabilitated by the literary community. He is highly regarded in Serbia for his contributions to Serbian literature.

A remarkable book with a grand sweep of almost 500 years from the building of the bridge over the Drina in the 1560s to the First World War. There are human stories throughout interwoven with the political upheavals with various factions gaining and losing ascendancy.
In the town Turks, Serbs and Bosnians mix, as do Christians and Muslims.
The centre of the bridge is wider and this kapia becomes the meeting point for parts of the community over the centuries. It is the lives, loves and tragedies of the ordinary people of the town that dom inate the book and Andric writes with great warmth about all sections of the community.
There is periodic brutslity and armies move to and fro; rebellions and executions ensue, but the bridge is ever present. Change is slow over the first centuries, but the coming of the railway changes all that and the outside world begins to intrude. The book ends around the time of the First World War when the bridge is partially destroyed.
The historical parts of the book and the stories illustrate the despite the townspeoples innate feeling for each other and their ability to live together; the factionalism projected on them from political and religious movements sow the seeds for later conflicts.
An epic novel broad in its scope and execution and it suceeds in its objectives.

The slow and sonorous cadence of Andric's prose echoes through the novel as he depicts the history of a bridge on the river Drina, from its ignominious beginnings in the imagination of a madcap Vizier, to the brutal creation under the vituperative auspices of the Ottoman Empire, to its gradual fusion with the land in the psyche of the people until it becomes a part of the town, its foundations fused with the bones of its inhabitants and its roads the stage for so many of its stories. 

In many ways the road comes to symbolise the years or oppression suffered by Bosnia-from the Ottoman Empire to the Austro-Hungarian, the bridge bears witness to the hundreds of years of oppression which Bosnians had suffered. The leads to Andric's severe, almost Biblical narrative style, as he narrates the history of the people who populated the area surrounding the bridge. After a while this can become jarring, especially as Andric describes the history of the bridge at breakneck speed and there is something fundamentally unreal about the characters he depict, whether it be peasants maddened with the fervour of patriotism or the Ottoman officials who are willing to sacrifice peoples lives to get the bridge built. In many ways this is reflective of the violence which permeated the region for hundreds of years.

'The Bridge on the Drina' is a unique, if at times heavy-going, description of a bridge which comes to symbolise both the oppression and enduring strength of the Bosnians under the lode of hundreds of years of imperial subjugation.

کتاب پل رودخانه درینا اولین کتاب از سه گانه ایووآندریچ نویسنده مشهور اهل کروات – بوسنی ایست . کتاب های دیگر سه گانه او وقایع بوسنی ( به فارسی ترجمه نشده ) و زنی از سارایوو هستند . محور اصلی سه گانه او مردم بوسنی ، زندگی و تاریخ آنها بوده و آندریچ تلاش کرده تا همراه با شرح زندگی مردمان این ناحیه ، تاریخ سرتاسر درد بوسنی را هم بیان کند .
پل رودخانه درینا بازه طولانی از تاریخ بوسنی را در برمی گیرد ، حوادث کتاب کمی قبل از ساخت پل توسط سوکلو محمد پاشا که خود اهل شهر ویشه گراد در بوسنی بوده شروع شده ، تقریبا چهار قرن به درازا کشیده و سرانجام با شروع جنگ جهانی اول پایان یافته است . آندریچ در این زمان 400 ساله ، تغییرات شهر ویشه گراد وزندگی سخت مردمان آن درزمان حکومت های عثمانی و سپس امپراتوری اتریش – مجارستان را به تصویر کشیده . شاید ناپایداری و تغییرات اساسی ، بنیادی و پی در پی را بتوان فصل مشترک زندگی مردمان این ناحیه دانست اما آنچه در طول این 400 سال ثابت ، استوار و پابرجا مانده همین پل معروف بوده است .
سپری کردن روزگار کودکی نویسنده در شهر ویشه گراد ، به او فرصت و مجالی بی مانند داده که راوی تاریخ ، جغرافیا و محیط مناطقی باشد که با آن آشناست .
بالکان ، بوسنی هرزگوین ، سارایوو و ویشه گراد نواحی که جغرافیا داستان را شامل شده اند به سبب وجود قوم های مختلف ، ترک ، کروات ، صرب ،بلغار و دینهای سه گانه توحیدی همواره آماده انفجار و شروع جنگی خانمانسوز بوده اند ،برای نمونه می توان از جنگ جهانی اول که با ترور ولیعهد اتریش شروع شد و یا جنگ های بالکان و یا جنگ استقلال کوزوو نام برد . در در کتاب پل رودخانه درینا گرچه مستقیم نشانی از جنگ ها نیست اما نشانه های آن را در همه جا می توان یافت .قتل و عام ، کوچ اجباری ، تفییر مرزها ، حمله به اقلیت های قومی نمونه ای از این نشانه ها هستند . در تمامی بحران ها این پل سنگی زیبا همواره استوار و محکم باقی مانده و آسیب چندانی ندیده . گویی به گونه ای وارد فرهنگ این ناحیه و سبک زندگی تمامی مردمان آن شده و به مرور با زندگی مردمان این شهر پیوند خورده و تبدیل به بخشی از قصه های آنان شده است . پل به شهر ویشه گراد فلسفه ای نا گفتنی داده :

این که زندگی شگفتی ایست درک ناپذیر که بی وقفه می گذرد و از میان می رود و توامان دوام پیدا می کند و تاب می آورد ، درست مانند پلی بر فراز رودخانه درینا .

از دیدگاه نویسنده حکومت های مختلف چه امپراتوری عثمانی و چه امپراتوری اتریش – مجارستان گرچه در جزییات با هم تفاوت داشته اند اما کلیات آنان یکی بوده : حکومت عثمانی با ظلم و چپاول و روشهای نامعقول از مردم مالیات و اعانه می گرفت اما حکومت جدید و دستگاه اداری حاذقش همین کار را بدون ضرب و زور و ایجاد اغتشاش انجام می داد و چه بسا از این راه سریع و مطمئن مبلغ بیشتری نیز دریافت می کرد . هیچ کدام از حکومتها به مردمان در تعیین جایگاه و موقعیتشان اختیاری نمی دادند و تصمیم ها فارغ از خواسته ها و آرزوهای آن ها گرفته می شد . گویا جایی در دوردست تاس ها ریخته شده بود و همان جا سرنوشت تک تک مردم رقم خورده بود .
آندریچ در کتاب خود واقعیت و تاریخ را با داستان را درهم آمیخته ، کتاب او شامل تاریخ و داستان مردمانی ایست که تاریخ را در درازای زمان تجربه کرده و با آن زیسته اند . گرچه کلیات تاریخی کتاب را در کل درست دانسته اند و بخشی از داستان و شخصیت های کتاب را ساخته ذهن نویسنده ، اما هدف آندریچ شرح تاریخ نبوده . او واقعیت را در رنجی دیده که بر مردمان آن جا رفته و با کمک از پل و استقامت آن راوی توان ، بردباری و پایداری یک ملت شده است .

Primer contacto con este pedazo de autor y salgo encantado. Siempre se agradece la novedad, aquí la hay desde luego, hasta tal punto, que no existe un protagonista al uso, el protagonista es el puente sobre el río Drina, el cual ve pasar el tiempo, la historia y a toda una serie de protagonistas secundarios a lo largo de los siglos.

A diferencia de por ejemplo "Los pilares de la tierra" o "Cien años de soledad", en que una rama familiar se va sucediendo y ve pasar el transcurso de los años y hace de nexo de unión de la historia, aquí me sorprendió que ese nexo fuera exclusivamente ese puente magnífico, que ve pasar religiones, culturas, cambios de estados, guerras y un largo etcétera de grandes historias, que de no ser por el puente podrían parecer historias inconexas, siendo el puente, la ciudad y el entorno los que le dan la ligazon que necesita la historia.

Dentro de esta gran novela se agrupan innumerables sub-historias menores (menores por el tamaño, no por la calidad). Un ramillete de cuentos y relatos de las culturas musulmana, judía sefardí y cristiana ortodoxa. Costumbres, leyendas y anécdotas de esa difícil convivencia que supuso históricamente una zona tan conflictiva (no tanto por la pacífica convivencia de culturas y religiones tan diferentes, como ocurrió en España hace siglos, sino por por los intereses geopolíticos y de los diferentes "imperios" a lo largo del tiempo) como esa frontera de la Bosnia natal del autor, pasando de manos turcas, a austro-húngaras, luego a las serbias. Por cierto interesante también lo que tiene de histórico y el conocimiento que facilita de ese territorio de los Balcanes tan complejo. De forma novelada, más entretenido por cierto.

Un 4 alto. A pesar de sus 500 páginas no se hace largo, al revés, estas deseando retomarlo. Recomendable totalmente

Nesreća nesrećnih ljudi i jeste u tome što za njih stvari koje su inače nemoguće i zabranjene postanu, za trenutak, dostižne i lake, ili bar tako izgledaju, a kad se jednom trajno usele u njihove želje, one se pokažu opet kao ono što jesu: nedostupne i zabranjene, sa svim posljedicama koje to ima po one koji za njima ipak posegnu.

Rijeka teče, a most ostaje. Ljudi dolaze i odlaze, most ostaje. Godišnja doba se smjenjuju, a most ostaje na mjestu. Vrijeme prolazi i sve što nosi sa sobom nema gdje, pa se ono tako ugrađuje u most ostavljajući na njemu ožiljke, kojih da nema, on ne bi bio tako lijep. Drina neumorna i povremeno valovita, spolja zelena i pjenušava, a iznutra virovita i strma, teče brzo i neprestano kao da ne postoji sutra. Most na Drini spaja ljude, ali isto tako ih i razdvaja. Na lijevoj strani obale hrišćansko parče neba, a na desnoj islamsko parče neba. Jedna strana neba strada i krvari, dok je druga u usponu. Jedna žilava i neustrašiva, a druga žestoka i odlučna.

Ivo Andrić u ovoj knjizi postupa kao istoričar, a njegova vješta interpretacija svega onoga što je istražio, analizirao i sve to sažeo, daje mu pigment hroničara, koji kao da je sa tim ljudima kroz vijekove živio i razgovarao. Njegov most se saživljava sa generacijama. Daje jedan implus života svim žiteljima oko njega, kao i običnim prolaznicima. Sam most od kamena prerasta u jedno mitsko stvorenje koji od svog nastanka iz stvarnosti prelazi u javu i obratno. Primjeri toga su već u početku, kada se ometala njegova gradnja pri čemu je dvoje djece urezano u njegove stubove. Kao što postoji i velika mračna dvorana u centralnom stubu mosta u kojoj živi crni Arapin, koji se javlja u dječijim snovima. Ko ga vidi, umire. Potom Andrić suptilno prelazi s Turske čizme, na Austrougarsku čizmu. Njihovo tlačenje i pljačkanje. Turci po metodi neracionalnosti, sirovosti i grubosti, a Austrougari sa usavršenim upravnim aparatom izvlače od naroda namete i poreze sigurno i bez bola, uzimaju čak i više nego što su Turci uzimali. Andrić fino uočava diskrepancu istočnog od zapadnog čovjeka. Dok je kod Turaka više bilo zatvorenosti, u smislu kuća, žena i posao, dotle su Austrougari išli na vidljivost bogastva u svom njegovom ruhu. Zadovoljstvo i uživanje sklonjeno je iz vjekovne sjenovitosti. Sad je do njega je lakše bilo doći, ali to često nije bilo istinsko zadovoljstvo, a sreća je sve više izmicala, više nego ranije.

Jedan od trenutaka u ovoj knjizi je svakako znatiželjan i fascinantan. Kada pijani Ćorkan usred hladne kasne noći hoda po uskoj ledenoj ogradi mosta, tačnije rečeno pleše po njoj, a ispod bezdan razjapio svoje čeljusti i čeka. Ćorkan ipak prelazi na drugu stranu mosta. Kakve su ga to sile održale u životu, po kakvoj božijoj milosti je ostao u životu.. Vrlo emotivno djelo Andrića čiji reljefni i karakterni prikazi dobijaju svoj puni zamah.

وإنه لمن سخافة الحياة الدنيا أن تُحبط من ظروفك ومحيطك للدرجة التي تعجز فيها عن الكتابة عن درة أدبية مثل تلك، فلا تكتب عن جمال الرواية ولا تعمق الكاتب ومعرفته وحسه النقدي للتاريخ والمجتمعاتـ فتكتفي من العمل العظيم بتذوقه فقط، وهذا لو تعلمون عظيم.

Quando scrisse questo libro, a metà strada tra romanzo e analisi storica, Andrić non poteva sapere quali drammatici eventi la Bosnia avrebbe vissuto. Eppure in queste pagine, se ne intravedono i prodromi. Sul ponte ci si chiede cosa vuol dire essere turco, musulmano, ebreo, serbo. Ci si chiede cos'è l'Europa, da dove nasce, dove va . Un ponte che sembra dividere, dunque, eppure in quasi quattro secoli di storia ci sono stati anche momenti sereni, di unione, dove piccole storie si incrociavano con grandi eventi che il ponte univa. Una metafora emblematica, questo ponte, e non a caso il racconto si interrompe nel 1914, prima che infuri una nuova (e non ultima, ahimé) catastrofe che sconvolge il mondo e la storia come la si conosceva.
