pub 1966
historical fiction
Russia> Kiev> Jews> anti-semiticism> protocols of zion
After Japanese/Russian war and leading up to Revolution
Pulitzer prize for fiction
Messianic symbolism
Opening: From the small crossed window of his room above the stable in the brickyard, Yakov Bok saw people in their long overcoats running somewhere early that morning, everybody in the same direction.
Yesterday's read was set in Yalta (Crimea) (1911)
Today's read is in Kiev (1911)
Not much distance between the two when you look at he map
The year and the region are the only similarities.
Blurb from Life magazine - Kiev in the years before the First World War is a hotbed of anti-semitism. When a twelve year old Russian boy is found stabbed to death, his body drained of blood, the accusation of ritual murder is made against the Jews.
This is powerful stuff; a tale of a set-up, absurd but deadly in nature, with slight undertones of Kafka or Camus. As Boney M sighed in that last line of n Rasputinn - "Oh Those Russians".
