Not much distance between the two when you look at he map



The year and the region are the only similarities.

Blurb from Life magazine - Kiev in the years before the First World War is a hotbed of anti-semitism. When a twelve year old Russian boy is found stabbed to death, his body drained of blood, the accusation of ritual murder is made against the Jews.

This is powerful stuff; a tale of a set-up, absurd but deadly in nature, with slight undertones of Kafka or Camus. As Boney M sighed in that last line of n  Rasputinn - "Oh Those Russians".

E' difficile scrivere questo commento. L'uomo di Kiev è un grande libro, scritto benissimo, una descrizione minuziosa del vissuto di una persona costretta nel ruolo di capro espiatorio di una situazione kafkiana (almeno per il protagonista, per il lettore è più chiaro quali sono i moventi dell'azione) e violenta.
Il romanzo è una discesa negli inferi non sono per l'escalation di tormenti a cui è sottoposto Yakov, ma anche per la rappresentazione del vacillare della sua mente alternata a momenti in cui la lucidità e soprattutto la sua dignità di persona ritornano al punto da non farlo piegare mai davanti a compromessi che potrebbero (forse) alleggerire la sua pena.
Da questo punto di vista è indubitabilmente un bel libro, ma... eh, sì, c'è un ma... se devo dire il mio parere in modo onesto, l'ho anche un po' odiato questo romanzo per la sua crudezza e per il dolore che trasuda. Un sacco di volte avrei voluto mollarlo. Chiudere con questa storia di sofferenza. Basta.
Sono arrivata alla fine. Sono contenta di averlo fatto. Non posso assegnare meno di 4* e credo anche che ne consiglierò la lettura, però una parte di me se lo sarebbe evitato volentieri.

Un capolavoro, con pagine nelle quali è obbligatorio fermarsi a riflettere e che vanno rilette. Un Uomo, con la atroce razionalità laica di chi ingiustamente è sottoposto a carcere e torture per la sua religione.

Very powerful and heartfelt. I stayed up all night reading it. Sometimes it reminded me of Nineteen Eighty-Four, but with far more heart and hope. Sometimes the suffering and torment was almost too much.  I don’t understand why some authors end their books like this, though. Yes, the character has learned something and hasn’t broken, but you never learn if he will ever have peace, maybe even happiness, and an end to his suffering. It’s unfair. Some of the characters and incidents truly moved me.
I think Bernard Malamud was a better person than George Orwell.
