I thought of The Borrowers when I read this book. Both feature little people who live a life seemingly oblivious to the owners of the house.
Frances Hodgson Burnett's children stories are a pleasure to read, given the time period that they were written in - although over 100 years old, their is no didacticism, which otherwise would date the stories badly.

I asked my 8 and 7 year olds to rate this as this was a read aloud. They didn’t love it, but didn’t hate it! We whizzed through it. They rated it a 3, and I agree.

Still brilliant after 100 years! Read it aloud.

My only beef with this near perfect book is that there are a couple of editing issues that have been neglected for over 100 years! Was that not enough time to make corrections?

A sweet and short story about a special dollhouse, that after years of use, is looking worse for wear, and so is renamed the "Racketty-Packetty House." And so when Tidy Castle arrives, brand-new and grand in every way, the Racketty-Packetty House has never looked shabbier, and so the maid tucks it behind the door in the nursery, only to be forgotten. But when nobody is looking, the dolls inside the house come alive and have all sorts of adventures.

Cute, simple story, but not my favorite. I probably would have adored it when I was a little girl though.

I have some granddaughters that would enjoy this book. A parent doesn't have to worry about any things or words in here that their kids shouldn't read.

In true Burnett fashion, this lovely story takes its time and uses wonderful period language, but is accessable to modern young readers. The only issue is that despite the happy ending, a romance is alluded to that doesn't ever find any sort of closure, which doesn't bother children, but might irk adult readers. The illustrations in this version are particulary charming, simple and whimsical.
