Part-time student, full-time Soul Reaper, Ichigo is one of the chosen few guardians of the afterlife.

Ichigo Kurosaki never asked for the ability to see ghosts—he was born with the gift. When his family is attacked by a Hollow—a malevolent lost soul—Ichigo becomes a Soul Reaper, dedicating his life to protecting the innocent and helping the tortured spirits themselves find peace. Find out why Tite Kubo’s Bleach has become an international manga smash-hit!Ichigo Kurosaki has always been able to see ghosts, but this ability doesn't change his life nearly as much as his close encounter with Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper and member of the mysterious Soul Society. While fighting a Hollow, an evil spirit that preys on humans who display psychic energy, Rukia attempts to lend Ichigo some of her powers so that he can save his family; but much to her surprise, Ichigo absorbs every last drop of her energy. Now a full-fledged Soul Reaper himself, Ichigo quickly learns that the world he inhabits is one full of dangerous spirits and, along with Rukia--who is slowly regaining her powers--it's Ichigo's job to protect the innocent from Hollows and help the spirits themselves find peace.

ok full disclosure, I picked this up NOT because I was super intrigued by the premise, but rather that I wanted to try out one of the famed "BIG 3" manga series, and Bleach was the one that A- sounded the most interesting and B- I stood the best chance to enjoy. TBH I went into this fully expecting it to be a basic 3/5 read.

But, plot twist!! This was really good?? It was a solid 4/5 (probably 8/10?) volume. I very much enjoyed that, and I really didn't expect that.

this series is literally 74 whole volumes long WHAT HAVE I DONE

Fifteen year old Ichigo Kurosaki has the ability to see, touch, and talk to spirits. Ichigo has been able to communicate with them since he was a little kid. Ichigo lives with his two sisters and his father. The important part in this book is when he meets Rukia Kuchiki. Rukia is a Soul Reaper that changes his life.

It was love at first sight. I loved the book the moment I read it. The drawings are nice as well as the plot. There's even anime to go with it. All the characters are unique in their own way. It's one of my favorite manga. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who's into the action genre.

T/W- Violence, Gore

Bleach certainly didn’t hold back from the amount of violence, gore and blood. Yuck! As someone who is relatively new to reading manga, Bleach was a title that I came across one day on Instagram. It follows a young character called Ichigo, who is fifteen and can see spirits that don’t settle down and haunt the minds and bodies of others. Connecting with a soul reaper called Rukia, the two of them work together until she gets injured and Ichigo must take over. It was a really interesting premise but sadly, the graphic content of the illustrations was far too gory for my liking.

Story & Plot: 5 ⭐
Characters: 3 ⭐
Writing: 4 ⭐
Art: 3 ⭐

I only watched the first anime episode and decided to check out the manga instead.

The characters are alright but no one really grew on me much during these few chapters for this volume.

The plot is quite interesting as we find Ichigo thrown into a new environment, one he didn't realise existed, even though he was already able to see ghosts/spirits. It was pretty cool to see Ichigo having a giant blade, signalling the amount of power that he can harness.

Looking forward to reading the next volume!

You Should Read This If You Like: typical Shounen manga with an underdog protagonist who turns out to be super fucking powerful, badass actions scenes, sarcastic characters, etc.

*This is a series review up to Vol. 25*

I’m going to get so much flack for saying this but Bleach was underwhelming. This is probably a me problem and not a universal one seeing as how the anime has been running for nigh on forever now and this series is even getting a soft reboot. But man, this manga feels so incomplete.

I’m a ride and die Naruto fan and, however unintentionally it might be, but comparisons were made while reading this. My main problem with this series is how very quickly everything seems to develop and progress for our protagonist Ichigo. Almost every single obstacle thrown his way is quickly overcome and surpassed with his powers growing stronger every arc. Unlike in Naruto, Vol. 01: Uzumaki Naruto where the characters steadily undergo change, working hard to become better and stronger Shinobi (for the most part), here the character progression feels very unearned.

Ichigo gets more powerful just because it doesn't feel earned. Even when he has training he masters his powers quickly, in a matter of days. Unlike in Naruto where you could clearly tell how strong a character is at any given period of time and based on that calculate who they can or can't win against. Here Ichigo fights with characters who should be 100 times stronger than him, a mere novice, and yet he defeats them easily. With an unexplained increase in power. Again feel very unearned.

I’ve read up to Vol. 25. Bleach so far has done a fairly good job of expanding the world and building on the existing mythology. But I can't see the boundaries of the world. I don’t know the limitations of this world, what is possible and to how far, what is impossible, etc. So it just feels like the plot is figuring out these things alongside the readers, stacking on the story and adding more powers as the goes along. It just feels so, so incomplete to me for some reason I can;t see myself continuing on with this series.

I like Ichigo and most of the other characters I’ve been introduced to thus far. But I never feel any sense of danger for them. Even when Rukia was about to be executed I knew Ichigo would somehow save her. There is no real sense of urgency either. But my biggest problem with this series is I cannot see what Ichigo stands for. Why does he want to be a Shinigami? What are his motivations? Where does he want to be in the future? What’s in this for him? We got a glimpse of this in the arc about his mother's death. But beyond that? I don’t know and at this point I don’t really want to find out either. 3 Stars for the series overall.

OMG?!
This will be another weekly release just like The Seven Deadly Sins.
This will be an even longer journey because there are 74 volumes in total, so 74 weeks.

What to say about this one if not that I absolutely loved it?
The art is amazing, the story so far is amazing and I loved all the characters and different situations that were created.

The idea is pure genious and since the very first chapter I got hooked and read it in one sitting only all together. I can't wait to have in my hands V2 next week!
